System Shock 2. Replay value: play it on "Impossible". Don't play this game if you're easily scared and have a heart condition. Note: this is not only an RPG. It's a genre-bender game... it's a first-person shooter/action/adventure/horror/RPG all in one. Even has multiplayer, though should be played first time through single player. It is still my favorite single player game, besting DX and HL.

what graphics card are you running, and with what drivers?
-
Well? Did you get it to work?

Don't see why Quake or UT would even bother having single joystick let alone dual joystick support. The main thing that makes FPS better on the PC over consoles is the mouse/keyboard combo. I'd try familiarizing yourself with this combo, as it's much more effective than any joystick setup.

Quote: New question: What settings should be used on the imuse sound settings program that TF uses? VDMSound's online documentation didn't seem to address this. (or I'm just very bad at reading) I was under the impression that the standard win98 layer would do the trick with "EmulateJoystick" unchecked... Maybe try lowering your hardware acceleration in DXDIAG (Start>Run>[type in:]DXDIAG>Sound (Tab))

Will they each detect seperately in each of the different USB ports?

Did you try Microsoft's ACT2.6? Read the FAQ I linked to above for more info.

I got it to work fine. You'll need the latest patch. (bottom of page) (unless you have the balance of power installed, which includes patch) Then you'll need to use Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit. For more information on this, read my FAQ (and in ACT, disallow the "EmulateJoystick" fix--also you will need a joystick as the game will not run without first detecting one)

From NovaLogic support: Have a look at this page. (in case you haven't already) I don't suggest flashing the BIOS, as this can cause worse things to happen if something goes wrong. Have you tried disabling any antivirus programs? Also, it says, "SYSDUMPs are generated by the game when the game tells Windows (using DirectX) to perform a function. Windows then instructs the hardware (using the hardware's drivers) to generate the image or sound. If for any reason there is confusion in the process, you receive a sysdump." So, maybe minimizing what the hardware does might get rid of it. So the following might work: Running DXDIAG (Start>Run>DXDIAG) clicking on SOUND tab and dragging notch to no acceleration (all the way left). In addition: start>settings>control panel>display>settings (tab)>advanced (button)>troubleshoot (tab)> then drag the notch to the left for no acceleration. (changes won't be made unless apply or OK is clicked afterword) If this works, then you could slowly (one notch at a time) move the notches back to the right. Then try playing the game. Repeat until error. Once the error occurs again, moving the last notch setting back left a notch should do the trick. Then try setting the other device which acceleration doesn't seem to cause the dump back to full acceleration. Remember to set these back to full acceleration for other games. Optimally, you shouldn't have to do this. But if you really want to play the game, it's better than nothing.

That game is running off the Unreal engine isn't it? I'd guess it'd be an easy fix to get it running smoothly. Try the latest patch. If that doesn't work, check the KHG support page.

Wasn't the collectors edition redone on the Xwing vs. TIE Fighter engine? That game ran fine on my Win2K setup using ACT. If so, ACT should work, just have it do Win98 layer with emulate joystick disabled. Make sure to have a joystick plugged in, as it won't run without detecting one.

Try lowering your video acceleration.

Try my FAQ Also try microsoft's support.

http://www.3dgamers.com/games/driver/ Might want to try using ACT version 2.6. For more info, read my FAQ.

Tried Racer on my 2K system (GF3/40.72/SP3). Used ACT 2.6, standard Win98 Layer. On one level I got the all one color screen after an odd crash/regeneration. I'm wondering if it was caused by some sort of clipping. Well, strange thing is, this time the game still carried on, and i could actually get rid of the glitch by changing camera views...

This cooling does have an advantage: The GPU won't put as much heat into the case. Overclockers, rejoice!
-
Quote: GFFX sounds cool, but the cooling requirements seem to be getting a little nuts. I haven't really read up on it, but I swear I've seen something about it needing a cooling solution like Abit's OTES cooler. If that's the case, that's gonna kinda suck for people that need every last available expansion slot. Ya, it's definitely beefy. Click for more picks and AnandTech's GeForce FX preview Oh, and on the topic of 3dfx, here is the avatar I use on other sites. To bad this one doesn't have 'em. (it's an animated gif, may have to wait a few seconds for the 3dfx bit)

Check this page for synthetic results, and this and subsequent pages for gaming performance results. Basically, the IGP falls between a GF4MX420 and a GF4MX440 in games. There is no completely equal way to compare the IGP perfomance to a KT400 mobo with a GF4MX card, because the IGP makes use of and is affected by system RAM. It isn't exactly a 420 or 440 chip. Only way for straight number comparison is either to stick an nForce2 IGP on a KT400 mobo (ya, right ) or use an nForce SPP setup with a seperate graphics card and a KT400 with the same. And odds are the nForce would outperform the KT400, given the same GFX card, as many benchmarks indicate. As the nForce2 outperforms the KT400 chipset on almost every level, I'd go with it over KT400. If video performance is so important, I'd suggest a GF4 Ti4200 with 128MB of memory for the new games sporting huge texture sizes. So the question becomes one less of NF2 or KT400, but more of NF2 with SPP or IGP?

Quote: Just a heads-up, but you might want to check to see which PCI revision is req'd by the Geforce4 MX line, I believe it's 2.2, which isn't supported by all boards. Hmm... Some might be 2.2. The eVGA GF4MX PCI card is PCI 2.1 compliant, so there's at least one out there. I'll edit the answer. Thanks.

Q: I want better 3D gaming performance, but I have an integrated graphics card on my motherboard and no AGP slot for a video card. What's the most powerful graphics card I can use without getting a new motherboard? A: A GeForce FX 5200 PCI is probably your best bet, as it supports DirectX 9, has decent AA and AF performance (which shouldn't be limited by the PCI), and (in the linked case) has 128MB. They haven't put a top of the line GPU on a PCI video card (as far as I know) because of the limitations of the PCI. Do some research on how to disable the integrated video, before attempting to install a new card. Read and follow all warnings about work inside the computer's case for your own and your computers safety. Update to the most recent WHQL certified drivers for optimal performance. Be sure that your system meets all the video card's requirements: your mobos PCI slots must be complaint with the PCI card, and your OS must of course, be supported. Also consider that even with a new video card, if your CPU is too slow, upgrading the video card may not make newer games sustain adequate framerates.

Welcome to the forums. Okay, so Screamer 2 was released in '96... You could try getting ACT 2.6 and using QFixApp to force 640x480 resolution. Click on the Win95 layer, and then check a box under fixes for the screen res/color depth you want. For more info, try out my FAQ.

Has anyone had any luck using ACT 2.5 getting a game to run better than it would run with ACT 1.5/2.0?
-
Oops, didn't realize ACT 2.6 was out. Well, I tried out (Pod) Racer again. First time without QFixApp to see what SP1 might've done. First off, in XP it passed the sysreq tests, and I don't think it passed all of them the first time I tried it in XP. Second, the menu interface didn't have issues when trying to configure a joystick. None of that mattered much, as when I launched a game and wasn't even treated to the pre-race camera views before the screen went all one color (save the HUD). Then of course, the game failed to respond after the race started. So, I tried with QFixApp, Win98 layer. No improvement... Anyone know if there are any new fixes that might help this bug? Oh, also the movies were jerky, and I don't remember that being a problem before. Once again, it's nice of LucasArts not to put out a simple patch for this. While I'm ranting about LucasArts, what's the deal with Galactic Battlegrounds? The civs seem more homogenous than the AoE2 ones though clearly they should be more different. One civ "unique" tech wasn't even unique, it just had a unique name as the same technology is available for another civ under a different name (the market price one). Seemed that rather than test the gameplay consequences of more interesting civ specific bonuses, they just went the safe route and made them so slight I don't know why they even bothered. And the TIE bombers, come on! What, they can't shoot at other aircraft? Seems like they could in the movies... Oh, and the rebel recruits or whatever they were called looked like they spent more time in a bad tap-dancing school than in military training.

#1, System Shock 2. a close second: DX. Those two are both better than half life, IMO. Possible future additions: Unreal II, and DX II.
