"Z.I.F Local Bus" Motherboard..........WTF is it?
Champion_R replied to videobruce's topic in Hardware
Quote: Technically, VESA ran at 40MHz and PCI at 33MHz. So, at the time, VLB was superior. But again, VHS vs BETA. PCI does all sorts of other stuff like bus mastering, etc that would make it superior. -
Winzip and WinRAR are not effective for securing documents. It is so easy to bypass. Considering the types of documents he/she wants to protect, I would not use WinZip or WinRAR to protect the files.

3DMark 2001SE build 330 seems too low. please comment

Did u do a fresh install of Windows? Always best to That score looks about right for a standard clocked card. There are some in the 10000's but they seem very overclocked. -

What software do you use for Mp3/Wav playback?
Champion_R replied to Lotus's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: anyone that doesnt use Winamp 2.xx is retarded I've found that out of all the MP3 players Winamp 2.x has by far the worst audio quality. It also has low CPU usage but the quatity is shocking. For WMAs and MP3s I use WMP9. Easily the best sound quality but it does use more resources than Winamp. On top of that WMP9 has great playlist features and media organising features. WinAmp 3 has better audio quality than 2.x but it takes forever to load and the interface is so slow (even on modern systems). WMP 6.4 is still a very good player in terms of sound quality but it lacks playlist features. P.S. I do like the like the fact Winamp 2.x can play a locked file (good for trying files that are being downloaded ) -
This is a MAJOR problem in XP Pro for me. I've reduced the probelm on a large scale by running a program called O&O Clever Cache 4. I can't live without it now. Makes the XP disk cache work Should help with Windows 2000 too.

I reckon u've jumped the gun. You should try the card in another machine and determine if the card is defective.

I can't boot from promise ultra100 tx2 controller. WHY??
Champion_R replied to duhmez's topic in Hardware
Maybe a boot device has to be set in the RAID controllers BIOS. Then try setting the boot device as SCSI. -
XVid-Qix - Where can I get Qix? I think it's an Audio Codec
Champion_R replied to Christianb's topic in Everything New Technology
XVID/Ogg seems like the most ideal soloution. Windows Media 9 is nice but encoding takes ages and the good features require that WMP9 is used to play the file back and not everyone has the player but one could say the same for XviD and Ogg. P.S. AC3 does support 5 channel audio. -
Google for Refreshlock. It works will all graphics cards and drivers.

10,000 rpm WD SATA-EIDE drives on the way! 5.2ms seektimes!
Champion_R replied to SHS's topic in Hardware
I don't trust review sites on seek times. Toms has my drives at 13 to 14ms. I actually get 12.1ms or even 11.8 on some days. -
Yes, it seems that way. It's just showing the maximum possible speed. Even in normal circumstances, the number is just the initial connection speed. It's not the maximum speed of the connection, but it can be reference to your connection speed.

Quote: 150 and 50 is not a comparable difference- i get that difference by running the test 2 or 3 times after reboots on the same machine. Thats what I get difference if I overclock my POS GeForce2 MX200

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ This can identify whats required to play an AVI file. -
SATA cables are far nicer to deal with. Also would be faster than regular ATA providing the Silicon Image controller is used. Remember when the RAptor is being compared to the Diamondmax Plus that the Raptor is a measly 36GB compared to the nice 250GB of the Maxtor unit.

Add "Regsvr32 /s regfile.reg" to the login script without the quotes for Windows 2000/XP. Not sure for other OSes may be the same

Recently I added a 512MB DDR to my system and discarded the 256 and 64MB PC133 sticks. A week after this I starting getting system freezes, random reboots and blue screens. Today I opened my computer and the PSU had these numbers on the label. (This is meant to be a 350W PSU) +5V 25A +12V 15A +3.3V 15A It also said this "The max load can't be over 100W when both DC+15 and 3.3V are used." I think thats the Total Combined Output. From what I've read about my motherbaord on forums, people recommend a TCO of 180W. Does anyone else think that such a weak PSU can cause the problems I have described earler? Also some PSU recommendations would be nice.

Hows this for weird, last night I ran Prime95 for like 3hrs without a crash. Voltage did drop low but the system stayed up. This morning I did a CMOS clear and reseated the RAM and I put the machine under heavy load this morning and it's all going well now. Buggered if I know what was with it, but it's working now
-
Might of been running on the bleeding edge before I added the new RAM module. Might try running my machine with less gear and see it it's fine then Best way to tell if power is an issue.
-
I was thinking along the lines of getting an Antec Truepower 430W. My 350W is the one that came with the case and it seems like the case company has just rebadged some el cheapo PSU.
-
Lowering RAM timings didn't solve anything. I'm convinced it's the PSU or the board itself. Also ran Memtest86 without any problems. My voltages dip when the system is under load.
