Quote: This post is appreciated but most computer noob's just look at performance and do not take the lifetime of the product that they will use into consideration Don't jump the gun, assuming I have no idea and a speed freak. A drives MINIMUM write speed is a useful attribute to some of us. 14MB/sec vs 38MB/sec. The better minimum write speed is useful for multimedia and video editing which I use my computer for. P.S. I have 2 Maxtor drives now and both are fast and reliable drives.

HD Tach says my CPU usage high but my bus mastering works fine. I have a feeling it doesn't read the CPU usage properly for some controllers or configurations.
-
The Maxtor drive comes in UATA too. It would be interesting to see how the UATA models perform in comparision to the SATA ones.

Quote: Thank goodness for having Maxtor HDD's. There HDD are fairly close to the same speed but they don't have any recalls. Maybe the 8MB Maxtor HDD's will put them over the top as far as speed is concered. You are correct. The Diamondmax Plus 9 series are great drives. Comes in both ATA133 and SATA. Read the reviews and you will find they are the fastest SATA/UATA133 drives on the market. -
Maybe a fresh install of Windows is on the horizon. IMHO 1.2Ghz and 512MB, what the hell are you running 98se for? I'd boost that machine upto Windows 2000 or XP. There is no point running a crap OS like 9x on a machine like that.

How do repair the stock IE 5 of windows 2000 pro sp2?

Not actually sure, depends on what files must be replaced I guess. -

Goto command prompt and type "sfc /scannow" That should replace all the system files to their defaults but make sure you have service pack 2 slipstreamed on a CD cos u'll need it. -
Blue is board, Black is Primary and Grey Secondary if memory serves me correctly. In an ideal world, I like to keep all my magnetic drivs on separate channels to allow faster trasnfer between them. My 20GB shares a channel with my CDROM and the 20GB drive takes no performence hit.

Try Knoppix 3.1. It's a Linux Distro that boots from a CD.

Does Audigy2 have DOS drivers for use with older games ?
Champion_R replied to FrankE's topic in Legacy OS
Have 2 soundcards, one for DOS games with DOS drivers and the Audigy 2 if worst comes to worst. Other options could include using DOSbox, VirtualPC or the beta of VMWare 4 which I think has VESA support now. -
It's my Celeron 633. It doesn't have the capture card anymore.

Did I mention this before? If not, take a peek... awesome!

IMHO larger platters and more platters allow better transfer rates. -

It's 36GB and I was rather disapointed with the benchmarks. Only true gains are the seek time and at 36GB it's not really a great investment IMHO. The performance hit comes from the small disk size and thus platter size. Larger versions with larger platter sizes should yield far better results. -
Most of the problems I had with the old system relating to video capture were related to the VIA chipset not CPU Speed. Not sure what VIA chipsets are like nowdays but I know the one I used to have as my main system (693A) wasen't impressive.
-
Try video capture Was extremely difficult on my old VIA based Celeron 633 and is now a breeze on my SiS based XP 1700+

There's a set of command-line tools which shouldn't be too hard to find. Also I think CD-EX can encode Ogg too.

Whenever I make bootable CDs I use CDRwin to make the image and burn it with another program.

Try and see if it has changed your DNS server to something different. As a temporary workaround, try a proxy server to access the antivirus websites.
