There is already a slipstream guide on this forum, under this topic. The method is the same as it was for Windows 2000. -
Windows XP Pro vs Windows 2000 Pro
Champion_R replied to gilgamesh's topic in Everything New Technology
IMHO I reckon XP has horrible disk caching. When copying files (say a couple of hundred MB) or virtualdubbing (direct stream mode), my system is pretty much unusuable because the disk cache pages everything out to disk so the disk cache can occupy all of physical memory. I have also seen it happen on other XP systems. I never remember it happening on 2k pro but it's been a while since I've used 2k pro. But I cannot see myself returning to 2k because there is XP features I can't live without. I just hope that the disk caching will be fixed in the next version of windows. -
Have you tried Googling for a driver?

SVCHOST.exe --- Resources Gone... Please Help

Prehaps it's a graphics driver related problem. Try different drivers and see if that helps. -

Problem with Avermedia TV-Phone98 after installing WinXP SP1

Try DScaler. http://www.dscaler.org It doesn't use drivers to access the card. It accesses the hardware directly. -

Try reinstalling the drivers. The SP1 installation may have altered some of the files needed by the card. -

Is the only difference between the Radeon 8500 and 8500/LE a clock speed difference (275/275 vs 250/250) or is there another form of crippling at work?

Does any body know of anything that will work with SiS chipsets and Maxtor hard drives that will run inside Windows XP?

Windows Software To Disable Acoustic Management
Champion_R replied to Champion_R's topic in Hardware
Quote: Did you try the dos program from maxtor? And run it in from the command line? The program doesn't work from the NT commandline. I ended up using the DOS program. Booted into DOS and ran it. -
256MB SDRAM + 64MB recognise 196MB internal memory

Quote: i also head if you have a pc100 mobo, that pc133 will run at pc100 or pc66, but will never again run @ 133. Not True. I used to run my current memory in a Celeron at PC100 and it is running fine at PC133 now. -
Are there any lights on the keyboard. Try booting with just a VGA card and ram. After that try some different memory. Could be a dead board. Seems like there is no BIOS. Check the BIOS chip is seated correctly.

Have anything like the NIMO codec pack. That plays hell with a lot of stuff audio related.

Heroes of M&M 3 is far better than 4 IMHO.

Try Nero. From what I hear Roxio isn't that great.

Quote: if I am playing an MP3, and double-click on a different MP3 in explorer, there's a few seconds where media player loops the last 1/2 second of the currently playing MP3. Not a big deal, but a pain. Are you using a VIA chipset? Sound problems like crackling, etc seem to appear on some VIA chipsets.

Quote: Winamp 2.81 is definitely the best Mp3 player out there. I disagree, the decoding quality of Winamp 2.x is sh*t compared to other media players. The only good use for Winamp 2.x is that it can play a file which is locked (ie downloading a file from Kazaa). Winamp 2.x can play the file while it downlaods and I can try to assess the quality of the file so I don't waste my time. Winamp 3 is slow to use as the interface is sooooo slow even on modern systems. But the decoding quality is an improvement over 2.x. I use Windows Media Player 9 now. It's always been my player of choice from the 6.x days. It's playback quality is the best especially with the 7.x and later versions. People might argue that it uses too many resources to playback. But IMHO any half decent system can handle the alighty higher load, after all the better playback quality is worth it.

Did you use the internal drive to install Windows 2000. If not see if the drive will boot. That should help to find out if the drive itself is faulty
-
Thats a pretty good price and is bound to fall next month. I also cannot justify buying the latest and greatest graphics card, just too expensive.
-
I think I might have to install a floppy drive. Just got a utility to disable Acoustic Management and it can only be done from a boot floppy. Guess I'll have to put it in sooner or later.

Quote: save up and get a 9700 or the 9500. I'm waiting until the GeForce FX comes out. That will drive the prices right down. Might be able to get a 9500

Want to try an experiment? I need to know if this is doable!

Quote: This IS odd, and right now to me it is a good thing, but it's also seeming like a potential security violation! Non-admins can only list the files in that folder. So there isn't really that much of a security risk seeing as one would need to be an administrator to copy or move the registry.
