Speaking of new XP processors, which do you (all) think will be the better performer, the latest P4 or AMD's newest chip? I converted to AMD several years ago, though I liked working on Intel up to the advent of the P4. Nasty after that, price verus performance wise. I am a firm believer in what AMd processors can do. I'd stake a duron 750 against any PIII to date. So, will Intel take the lead?

The K7Npro is MSI's Nforce board, complete with GF2 shares up to 32 meg video. Don't let the shared part fool you, the performance is nice, comes with Dolby 5.1, takes the DDR standards, and has a nice NIC on it to boot. As I have mentioned before, it runs nicely on 2k, XP and even 9x. Not bad for 125-135 bucks, depending on where you look. Shame on the email part, but the grandkids come out looking real good.

Hear some weird stuff like that before. NTFS is WAY more stable than FAT anything. Period.

Boy this sure generated a lot of interest. Been running one of them with win2k pro, and it had drivers for everything. I guess I knew that, but was still surprised/impressed. Very simple install for an integrated board.

Have you guys tried the transparency modes? Setting it to near invisible can allow you to see more of your desktop. Found it interesting.

Can anyone recommend a good, solid card? I tried the Winfast 2000 XP model for a customer who insists on using win98. Doesn't bother me except that Leadtek's support for 9x is sad, or at least is with this card. Thus I find myself in need of a different card, and sadly short on knowledge thereof...

A question like that is bound to draw a variety of answers. I prefer 2000 pro, and if you want a license key go to http://www.9software.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=1&cat=Windows+Operating+Systems Win2k pro is currently running $80.00 for the lic and cd. http://www.9software.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?page=2 XP pro is running $144.00

Thanks for the replys. Yes, he is running a via chipset, but I have never had a problem with this board, or the newer via drivers (guess there is a first time for everything). He is running an MSI K7Npro with the latest BIOS update and 512 meg kingston DDR (I have two just like it at home). Performance is great, although it is a bit sad that he wants win98 on it.

True, unless you remove the start menu options from their GUI, you could limit their access sharply. Of course, when does the cure become worse than the ill...?

I agree with the watching your back part, corp I used to work for had great security, or so we thought. I found a week old network level admin password lying on a slip of paper in the floor... Needless to say the password was changed... again.

I download a lot of drivers, some of them are pretty rare, and there are times that ole driveguide just doesn't cut it. While there are a lot of driver related sites out there, I have found few that cut the mustard. Anyone found a gem in the mix?

I am glad it is so popular. In reply to Admiral LSD (interesting handle, sure there is a back story), it was only when she was running MSN, ICQ, AOL, etc, that she was experiencing issues. That little PII is a solid little machine, 'specially with almost 200 meg of ram.

First of all, I would like to add a disclaimer. No antivirus is perfect. Secondly, the question. Have any of you tried AVG (www.grisoft.com)? If so, what did/do you think? The reason that I ask is that I have successfully used it to clean numerous viruses, and have run it alongside McAfee to compliment the retail antivirus.

Hey, I am interested in all kinds of virus riddance. Where do you get/try Sophos? Also, if you boot into MSDOS mode in 9x, you can scan from there with AVG (c:\progra~1\grisoft\avg6\avg), does Sophos or any other distribution offer that support? I have had to scan an infected drive with three different distributions before it is entirely clean.

In this case the question is on a win98 machine. The original drive has everything on it, and is cabled as the slave, and running D:\. I have a customer wanting to import the mail from the D:\ drive that he had to the C:\. Problem is, I haven't as yet found the mail to do so. He was previously running WINME, now running 98SE.

I appreciate the bytes gentlemen. Not sure if you have ever had to obtain data from a customers dying drive, but they freak out over the slightest thing. Thanks again.

I appreciate the link. I am used to corporate with their *.pst files. Makes life a lot easier, unless the file corrupts. :-) Thanks again.

Glad to hear a lot of other folks are using it. I used to work corporate, and they also had a site license for McAfee, saw it miss a lot of stuff as well. Now I manage a computer shop, lot less customers, but I think the intelligence level went down, if that is possible. Anyway, I have seen problems with both Norton and McAfee, lately I have seen McAfee stalling machines (win9x)during bootup, chokes during the scan and dies. You all use any other virus removal tools? There is a neat little one from Panda (yes, Panda) that I used just yesterday to clear remnants of sircam.

There are some wonderful programs out there such as window blinds or preferrably desktop X that allow you to fully customize the user environment. Soon as the kid logs on, his gui could be anything you want it to be, from full windows to an environment of your sole choosing. www.stardock.com

You got an address? I will mail you a burned copy of the CD, minus the key, as you say you have one. Mind paying the shipping? International can cost a buck or two. I'm here in the good ole US of A.

You might want to check that original RAM you picked up. I just posted elsewhere about getting ECC instead of NON-ECC. Can cause some huge problems. If you did, sometimes you can resell it, 'cause it's worth more and is designed for dual processors' and the like.

Yeesh that is a long post. Nearly wore out my scroll mouse. I think www.mwave.com is pretty awesome, spent many thousands there, service is great, out of all the orders I only had two problems. Funny one was when the stick of (supposedly) non-ecc RAM arrived and digits started scrolling all over the screen. Ahem... otherwise, they have been great for the long haul.

Interesting. I tried UT that way back under 98, ran an S3 and a four meg Trident (hey, it was years ago), everything ran fine, until I wanted to game. Had to disable the second display at the time. Glad to know some things are changing.

Can you be a tad more specific? I would love to help if I can.

Remote Networking: Nothing under Network Places? HELP!
pbuckne replied to Lotus's topic in Networking
If ME runs as expected, it will try to connect to the drive letter even when you are not dialed up. An alternative might be to place a shortcut on the desktop to the location, and then use it once dialed in... Hope it helps.
