I would use 98SE in a heartbeat, everyone else has mentioned all the reasons that I hate ME already, so I will same the type. If you don't want to go either, try Linux or BeOS. BeOS is more or less on the way out, but it was kind of fun at the time.

84+shipping. Anyway, I also picked up a promise IDE controller. Had run out of room before...

Krex.com IBM 40 GB 7200 8.5 seek. 84 shipped. Loving every minute.

Also, if you are hitting cancel, instead of OK, you probably won't get a drwatson.log file... hope this helps...

If you are feeling adventurous, you might look under Hkey current user\colors and desktop keys...

Installing applications into multiple profiles on NT 4 or W2
pbuckne replied to wileyc1967's topic in Software
What do you mean by can't see? This might be what is happening: If you look under (on NT C:\winnt\profiles\all users\start menu\programs\) (or on win2k C:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\), do the shortcuts in question to the programs in question lie here or under the administrators profile, in its start menu? If the shortcuts are not under the all users profile, then they need to be copied there. They will then be "seen" under any users profile who logs on. Hope it helps. -
Outlook w/ Exchange Server... traveling and sending mails

He should be able to test up a second email profile and enable it when working off the network (presumably) to connect to his email via internet... -
Not sure if this will help, but once it hits the wallpaper, try going to task manager, and see what is running under the processes list. explorer.exe would be a good one to look for. If it is, try killing it, and restarting it (via new task, and typing in explorer). If it isn't, try manually starting it. This will let you know if something is hanging up the desktop a bit... Hope it helps.

K. What's the stats on the GF3?

I would be tempted to grab a PCI IDE controller, promise makes some goods ones. I just bought one the other day off of mwave.com dual controller for $18.00. Comes with an 80 pin cable.

How do you want the money?

It can be interesting to get used to, but the Admin account has a different desktop than would any other account. You can investigate all the fun under C:\documents and settings. Each account has its own profile, and the profile can have desktop/start menu options that are not seen by other profiles. Hope it proves interesting, and have fun, its pretty cool.

I wonder if turning off protected storage might help momentarily. The file might be stuck in limbo so to speak, protected by this service?

I would try another machine, if you have one handy. I thought I received the wrong RAM the other day, until I popped it into two different machines. One saw it as a 256, while the others read 128. A BIOS upgrade to the other two has them seeing things more clearly.

Not exactly what I would call a shell but what about DesktopX or something similar? It allows for all kinds of customizations... Range from cool to ridiculous...

I have seen some interesting errors in NT where deleting the existing temp dir under C:\temp was effective. I wonder if the temp variables are getting changed, and removing it forces them to adjust? Also, you might try renaming the existing temp dir, and then making a new one, since it is merely a folder. If the fact that you leave the "corrupted" one behind helps, you might be in the clear.

Funny that it would only seem to be found under 97, since it is on my 2k, but we could have upgraded editions, not for sure.

PLEASE HELP!!! I Need Troubleshooting tips for a Win2K Foulu
pbuckne replied to reversing_drive's topic in Software
I would try to find where the install.log file would be found, assuming it lays one down. Then I would slave the HDD to the other 2k machine, and locate the file. Make a copy of it, and alter every C:\ entry in the install log to D:\ (or whatever drive letter is assigned to you slaved HDD), and try running an uninstaller like unwise.exe or similar. A search of your any of your HDD's is likely to locate one. Place the exe and the log file into the same folder, and run them. Any files (minus the registry) can be accessed and should remove the offending files. Proviso: I have used this before to remove programs that were annoying, etc, but not APM, so I am not sure this will work. Hopefully it helps. -
What a relief! I was having nightmares about AOL spreading to othe r OS's. Yuck... Wonder if they would have dumped all the key files into their own folders, and then when you uninstalled their browser, your machines wouldn't work right...
-
Its frustrating when you hit the back button, and then resubmit the key. I guess I could claim my browser stutters...

Hmm. I have version 9.0.0.3821 Corporate or Workgroup. What are you running? Are you using Microsoft Exchange for email? Also, I know my 2k hides options I haven't used unless I click the double down arrow, are you seeing the whole menu? Sorry about asking, but its the easy ones that trip us up...

Agreed. Too easily damaged by Viruses or accidents at the front of the drive from what I understand.
