    Nice Custom Computer System!!

I can go $140.00. Does it have an OS on it, I have drivers for a newer model that was built for? Does it include a modem? Let me know what shipping comes to, and what payment method you prefer.
  2. I have an Abit BP6 dual socket 370 motherboard (no RAID) with two 533 celery PPGA processors, with fans, 128 meg of PC133 RAM, Sound Blaster Live Value, and an ATI 16 or 32 meg video card, can't recall which (but I can check). It has the latest BIOS flash, the 533 processors are a matched pair, perfectly suited to running side-by-side. Asking 200.00 for the setup minus the ATI card, 225.00 with it, + shipping. Again, I'll get the stats on the card if desired.

    it just sits there

Elsewhere on the site it talks about up[censored] a CD with service pack changes, so you could do that, and then burn to install and eliminate some of the guess work. I know I really hate taking a gamble, and screwing up my system, even if a rebuild only takes about an hour.

Is 1x512MB RAM "better" than 2x256MB

Check out pcboost.com. Ram is middle of the road stuff, but requires a high end system to run it. I saw a stick of 512 PC133 for 32$

    NT4 Startmenu Delay

Sounds like it may be altering the reg keys that coincide with what you are trying to alter

getting rid of "Links" in favorites menu

Forgive me if I've misunderstood, but you should be able to remove the links folder from under the "all user" profile as an admin, and it will be gone for everyone, since it acts as a template.

    Start menu problems

    NT or win2k?

    after upgrade, delete what?

I usually search for the exe by name (using either the find or search functions, depending on OS), and then either make a shortcut to it from there, or copy an existing shortcut to the desktop. This allows use of the program from the desktop or quicklaunch bar.

Whats the best modem for speed?

I noticed that you seemed to have gotten the response you needed, but I would like to throw in my towel for a USR ISA modem. It may not be supported under XP, but ISA internal hardware modems are DA BOMB. I have connected all day long at close to 50k, and never under 40... Not a cable or DSL connection, but not bad either...

    Wierd problem

I would be tempted to remove everything attached to the motherboard (even the floppy drive, harddrive, and cdrom cables) until only the video card remains (that pci might be a good choice). I have seen once or twice where a BIOS had reset to default. Once I had removed everything, it came back up to the "splash screen", and I began adding items one by one, until all was well again. Hope it helps.

    USB or PS/2 ?

I've heard, incidentially, that the ifeel mouse is good for gaming, since it gives you that little bump feeling when you encounter a variation on the screen, such as an opponent in a first person shooter, is such the case?

    USB or PS/2 ?

For gaming I prefer a trackball, since lifting an optical off the mousepad can cause some interesting responses in the first person or realtime strategy environments...

    Forget ME and 98!

Milleniam is basically service pack 2 for win98- not much of an improvement... I have seen it run decent with the system restore turned off, (completely). Fat32 itself has inherent issues, so anything running on it tends to have problems to begin with. I am much happier with Win2k than previous, and am still a bit iffy about the ole XP thing. I will be putting it on an old K62 350 for testing purposes, and we shall see...

    fan acts funny

Does its spinning up and down coincide with the activity of the machine, such as a power drain, or is it making a rubbing sound like a bad bearing?

    Power Supply

I'd check out pricewatch, I bought a 400 watt AMD approved for 50 something shipped to my door, warranted and all. Nice power supply, boat load of connectors.

So, what upgrades do you plan down the road?

I thought I'd throw in a word about dual processor boards- I have one, and can't see any performance increases- bp6 runnings dual 533's for the heck of it. I was thinking about going to the Tyan board, but have been seeing some reviews that are making me back of a bit, even programs designed to use the dual processor capabilities aren't gaining more than 4 or so seconds on a project, even Corel Draw 10... Kinda sad. I wonder if Linux running vmware and NT or 2k would pick that up a bit...?

Zip Drives.... and the people who love them

I use them for migrating data to stand alone machines, a lot of them don't have CDroms in a business environment, since it cuts down on expense. Also, I use one at home for working on customers machines, since a lot of them don't have them either... I have the USB and serial variety...

any disadvantages to partitioning your drives?

I have seen a great deal of time saved by partitioning and formating over the damaged OS, and starting over. Beating going after the whole thing. Disk access time will not be helped or hindered best I can tell. More importantly, I agree heartily with moving the swap file to a different partition, as it means that it will not be spread all over a drive and fragmenting like blazes. We have seen horrible slow down when swap files range outside of a 1 gig partition.

    Win98SE Keyboard probs

Hey, I've been known to use win98 too, for games... The corp I work for uses mostly Dell and IBM equip- knowing what you have for equip would help, such as are they all one brand or not, and so on. We had a bad run of Dell kbd's that would lock up due to a bad firmware upgrade on one of their production runs. We found that it was only one set of serial numbers that were effected, and replaced the cooresponding numbers, which still took days. BTW, we called it the sleeply keyboard syndrome, since it would just go to sleep, unless you removed the PS2 connector, and reseated it (not recommended) or restarted via the mouse. Either way, sounds very familiar...

    ACCESS to floppydrive

I have seen the identical error on Windows NT for the last couple of years. I work for a VERY large corporation, and we get to see some of the weird stuff... Anyway, we found that more often than not these two situations: 1, the user has saved a file to floppy, then removed it, and the windows environment is searching for a tmp file on the diskette (same as it would in the temp dir, or where ever the file originated) periodically in a effort to clean up after itself. Solution: Place a floppy disk into the drive with a tmp file on it, I've copied them from another machines temp dir, and placed them there. The PC will scan the diskette after awhile, nail the temp file, and be on its merry way once more. 2, once, when the none of the tmp files we placed on the diskette got a response, we actually recreated the customers profile, and this resolved the issue. Either way, hope it helps. :-)
