Hmm. Should be the bottom option. I will check my version of Outlook 2k at work tomorrow and see what I have, then we can compare. I still think we are on the right track. Interesting nonetheless...

Longish shot, but if it is a different machine, and the scanner is parallel, could it be a BIOS based option, such as which communication type to use?

Neither my NT nor my 2k box have that file on them, although they are quite basic builds. Can you search for the file, and check the properties to see what exactly it is?

What do you think the coolest gaming mouse would be? Doesn't have to exist yet. For me, I would want it to combine the purported accuracy of the Wingman with the A4tech (yes, A4tech) four button, two scroll wheel mouse, and the Logitech Ifeel model. Reason I would want to create such a horrible beast? It's alive, alive! 8) Ahem. Other than the terror it would create, the accuracy combined with the retort off of screen textures would allow for pinpoint, tip of my finger shots, and all kinds of programmable options inside the coolest FPS games. While I am not sure of any other benefits to using such a monster, killing everything in sight without using a conventional cheat would be, well, fun. Again, what would you design?

Most of us use the X to eXit out of programs... Outlook will by default remain running after you close out, since you can have any number of emails open that you might be working on, and it has a function where you can send a new mail message from the Office Toolbar (trust me, its there). Since it stays open, it is possible that one or more of those functions hang out there. In short, go up to FILE, then down to EXIT and LOG OFF in Outlook when you are closing the program. This will completely close all of Outlook, and might take clear out any processes that are hanging up.

I also know a guy who bought an ECS board, think he traded his VIA for it. Sorry. I have long preferred Nvidia, but that last ATI driver actually worked, so who knows, there may be a rumble among the titans...

We used to get these at work all the time, when the colors or screen area or refresh rate were set too high. The monitors (Dells) would wink out, displaying only that message. We would then remote (horrible software, SMS2.0 console, hack-cough)in, and set them back to something more agreeable. You might try lowering the colors to the next level down, since the monitor might be able to display at 1280x1024 @75 hz, but not with so many colors... Might help, dunno.

Not that I am particularly a brain on the subject, but of late I much prefer NTFS, it is much more stable in my experience, and loses far less data over time. I would much rather see new work in that area, stretching its limits. I understand it has its roots in HPFS, which is more unix based?

Try exiting and logging off of Outlook, after it sends and receives. It might not hang at that point, since it officially shuts down. Now while this isn't a fix, it might narrow the culprit down. Is it Outlook 97, 2k, XP or one of the Outlook Express variants? Also, are you Service Pack 2? I don't remember seeing it mentioned, but I could have missed it...

And this doesn't affect any other program? Makes me think that the print driver has something against Opera... Try visiting the same data through IE, or Netscape just to be sure, but I would guess that to be the blame...

Your transfer rates to your CDRW should improve, as well. By the way, what type of CDRW and DVD do you have? I am currently seeking two that will play well together, and have heard some nightmare stories...

They are out there. I have heard of one called password hacker or something similar. Not sure if they are Download.com friendly or not. Might have to go shadier.

Personally I wouldn't have upgraded. I would have run a straight install. Got a friend who started his PI system out with DOS 6 something or other, and then upgraded to Win3.1, Win95, added USB support, and then moved on to Win98 FE... Needless to say, the thing runs pretty poorly. I couldn't imagine the problems that running as powerful an OS as 2k on something like FAT or FAT16 would do to it, but it can't be good. Unless I am horribly mistaken, I would backup, format, and load fresh.

Nothing specific, but a thought for troubleshooting. Are each of these machines running the same OS/service pack? If so, do any of the ones giving the error have anything specific in common? On the Win98 machine (they can't all be 2k)I am currently using to write this, unregmp2 is literally what it sounds like, the Microsoft Windows Media Player Setup Utility. If this is the case, it sounds like one of two things. If they have admin rights (doubtful from what I read) then something is amiss with Media player. If not, then they may not have rights to set up the "personal settings" that their profile is trying to apply while hitting the desktop on those machines. This is similar to what Front Page and IE do. Hope it helps.

Are you running NT or 2k? Is Outlook running under applications or processes? How long has your machine been up without a boot? (You might try an uptime on your box) The reason I ask is that under NT, having processes hang was a lot more common than under 2k. Outlook will remain running in the background under normal conditions unless you choose file, log off and exit, or something like that. Then it shuts down completely. If the different Outlook sessions were running under processes, I would say that they were hung processes, and you might be running out of resources, so a reboot would be in order. If they were running under applications, I would wonder about the program... Hope my rambling helps.

I wonder. Has he changed printers recently, or upgraded drivers? The printing environment is almost entirely under the control of the print driver, and any options that you need will most likely be located under file, print, options or advanced. Also, did this work under a previous version of IE, or under ver 6, and just stop working?

I suppose from the last reply that you are logging in as Admin, or auto logging in with admin rights. If you used a different account, would you get the same results? Profile corruption under NT could be horrible, but I have only seen one go bad under 2k. -
I know this is a long shot, but what about an alternative OS, such as Linux? If it did recognize the HDD and mount the disk, you might be able to pull the files he needs. Also, have you considered scanning the drive with a bootable Virus scanning diskette? I haven't seen a virus do this specifically, but it could happen.

Sorry about your dog, my friend. I have always been a labrador fan. Had three black ones thus far, grew up with the first two. Hated to see 'em go. Last one can't hold a candle to either of the first, but she is a good pet.

Forgive me, is this an external HDD plugged in via parallel IDE card or an IDE ata controller card with internal ribbon cable?

Nvidia has its now famous NForce chipset, and the new board out from Microstar has potential in my mind for customers needing performance on a budget. I was wondering what y'alls thoughts were. From what I have seen, it looks pretty solid, using DDR ram (of course), and supporting AMD chips from Duron 600's through the new XP's...
-
Any plans for the 550 processor? I know someone who could use the chip...
-
Not sure if that board is a rev2, ver1, or 2, but I had a rev2, v1 that was awesome. Matter O' fact, I just sold it the other day.

Try someplace like directdeals.com, they have some fairly reasonable licensing. I express shipped a WIN98SE license for 65.00, can't remember what the Win2k was. Win95 was 18.00- Hee...
