    RAM problems with Windows XP

Okay here goes. I hope that there's someone out there that can help me out with this. I have upgraded to Windows XP and I have done a clean install. My previous version OS was WindowsMe. Now, WindowsMe RECOGNIZED my stick of 128 MB PC-133 RAM along with a stick of 256 MB PC-133 RAM.. totaling 384 MB RAM. My BIOS HAS RECOGNIZED that I have 384 MB RAM installed. Okay... I boot up Windows XP, my BIOS says that I have 384 MB RAM installed. When I go to Help and Support and check my hardware configuration that Windows XP build, it says that I only have 320 MB RAM installed. That's 256 + 64. How come it won't recognize the other half of my 128 MB RAM stick? At first I had 192 MB RAM, but then I switched the RAM around in the SDRAM slots on the motherboard. Also when I right-click on the MY COMPUTER icon, and select properties, it says that I have a 800 Mhz processor with 384 MB RAM... sigh.. Is it possible that Windows XP will only recognize sticks of RAM that are the SAME SPEED AND MEMORY SIZE? (for example.. I'll need 2 sticks of 256 MB RAM in order for XP to say.. hey you have 512 MB). Can anyone shed the light on this for me? This is the only problem I have noticed with my installation of XP. Thanks. (Please reply at the boards or e-mail me at kevin_hyk@hotmail.com) Kevin AMD Athlon 800 Mhz 384 MB RAM (XP only recognizes 320, but the BIOS says 384). 3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 SBLive! X-Gamer
  2. My +3.3V rail is running at about 2.76V right now. I've just built this new computer and things were running fine. Last night when I went to work, I leave my computer on all the time while I'm away, and then I came back home from work this morning, my monitor was a black screen and it seemed that my system came to a halt. I booted it to the BIOS screen and it came up with an error message in the hardware monitor. So, I check it out and it's RED, 2.76 and the same states in my ASUS probe prog. Is this a possible PSU failure? I haven't had this problem before till now. I built this computer about 2 weeks ago. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? I've tried checking to see if the motherboard was touching the chassis and it's not and I've moved around a few of my PCI cards to different slots and it seemed to gain a bit more voltage but not enough to where I can't play a 3D game, because then the system halts and I have to do a hard boot. Thanks for your help. Unreal Tournament Problem

When I load UT, it comes up with a window that says ERROR and then you click the OK button and then it launches the game in a window.. but for some reason, I CANNOT maximize it or play the game in full screen? I have a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 and I downloaded the XP/2000 drivers from ntcompatible.com and it works just fine with other games and runs in 3dfx Glide mode. Anyone else having this problem? Is there a way to get the game to maximize itself? You click on the button to maximize and it doesn't work.. kinda PO'ed, LOL. Hykster

+3.3V Out of Threshold Error message

Well, even in the bios, it shows that the voltage is running way low than 3.3v. Someone said it could be the RAM, but I dunno. I just got back and bought an ATX power supply tester and everything checks out... hmmm.....
  5. I've just recently built a new computer roughly two days ago. Here are the current specs: ASUS P4G8X-Deluxe Pentium IV 3.06 Ghz 1 GB DDR PC 2100 RAM ATI Radeon 8500 AGP4X 128 MB DDR Maxtor 120 GB HD Maxtor 10 GB HD (backup) Gigabyte LAN Ethernet MATSHITA DVD-ROM (about 6 years old.. works fine) HP CD-R/W 9500+ (about 2-3 years old.. seems to work fine also) Problem one: While installing programs from a CD-ROM, didn't matter which CD-ROM the install disc was in, when the installing was about 1/4 of the way finished, the whole system would halt and I would have to make a hard reboot. Basically, the CD-ROM would read the data at a certain speed and then gradually slow down till it stops, then the system would freeze up completely. So, I would go back into the BIOS and "disable" the hyper-threading technology feature. Now, I can install programs with a breeze and the CD-ROM reads data at it's full speed? Why is this? And also during times, I would get random system lockups with Hyper-Threading enabled... now with it disabled, I don't? Can someone decypher this? Problem two: I have an ATI 8500 Radeon 128 MB DDR. I've installed the lastest 4.7 Catalyst drivers and now I am constantly getting random lockups with games that require a 3D video card. I could be playing a game and then out of no where, the whole screen would fill up with different color bar colums filled across the screen and then the sound loops and the system comes to a halt. Then, I have to do a hard reboot. I've tried switching drivers to 4.6 and 4.5 Catalyst but I get the same problems. I've also tried running these games in a -windowed mode, but I also get the same problems. Problem three: When I boot up my system, it runs through the regular BIOS info and then I get a message stating: "Invalid BOOT.ini file Booting from C:/windows/" Windows starts up normal and runs fine with this "invalid" BOOT.ini file. By the way, this is from a CLEAN INSTALL. Could this cause my abnormal lockups and crashes? Does anyone have any possible solutions or theories of why I'm having these new problems? (My old system was an ASUS K7V 800 mhz AMD Thunderbird with 640 SDRAM and the same components listed above and I never had any problems with these.) Thanks for the help... and sorry for the long read. My bad. =) Kevin

Problems with Hyper-Threading and ATI 8500 Radeon

Yeah, changing and experimenting with different settings haven't changed a thing. The screen gets all sorts of colored bar colums that fill the screen, the sound loops and then, my monitor goes black and puts itself in a stand-by mode. I don't think it's the video card that overheats because this happens randomly. I can be playing a game for a while and then it does this, or it can do it right away... ugh...

I'll keep looking. Any other suggestions from others are welcome too. Thanks.

If their isn't a big diffrence in price where you are get the X800 Pro card instead of the 9800pro as the X800 is twice as fast.Sorry I am not helping with the original problem but just wanted to throw that out there. and just wondering something do you have Fast Writes enabled in the bios? the 8500 does not support them so try disabling that and see if it helps stop the freezes. also make sure that 8Xagp is disabled in the bios as sometimes it can cause a conflict with the 4agp cards even though they still default to 4X. S Yeah, I've seen the X800 cards, but never really looked at the specs for found out what the difference is inbetween both cards. I'll have to check that out. Also, there's no 8XAGP feature in the BIOS.. I'm only able to change it to 1x or 4x or Default (which is probably 8x). I switched to 4x and still had problems, so I switched it to 1x and I'll test some games out on it and see if I get any problems.

I had to update the FLASH to 1006 from ASUS's site in order for it to read my HDD's. How would I know if my BIOS MP version is set at 1.4?

    XP Restarting/Rebooting

I dunno if anyone else has had this problem, but ever since I downloaded Service Pack 1 for Windows XP, my computer has been rebooting itself whenever it feels like it, and also just shutting the computer off whenever.. just like plugging the plug and goes in stand by mode. The only way to reboot it from that state is to disconnect the power cord from the tower for a minute and then reconnect it. Anyone else have this problem? Some ppl say that it's caused with a hardware issues, but only with SP 1. It never did this before SP 1. I have the same hardware setup now as I did during the release of XP. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  13. Does anyone know where I can find the Shoutcast 1.80 plugin for WinAmp so I can do broadcasting over WinAmp? I've searched several sites and come to find that the sites have broken links for the plugin because they no longer have it on their FTP. I can't download the new Shoutcast plugin because it's not compatible with WinAmp 3. Thanks.

Older Shoutcast Plugin - Where to find?

I need to record the broadcasts for gamecasts and such so I can send in DEMOS of my casts. I found the 1.8.0 plug in last night. Thanks for the help.

Older Shoutcast Plugin - Where to find?

I believe I might have 1.8.2, but can I record my shoutcasting to mp3 with that version? I've heard it's only with 1.8.0. Lemme know! Thanks!! (I downloaded 1.9.2 but the older version of Winamp didn't recognize the plugin, I am required to have 1.8.0. supposedly...)

    Any good motherboards out there?

What are some good AMD Athlon XP mobo's out there? What are your suggestions? What's good and what should I avoid?

Yeah, I've heard lots of problems with the boards and VIA. Sweeeeeeeet. I'll take a look at it. Thanks.

    XP Restarting/Rebooting

I don't think it's the motherboard because it's never given me a problem during the first year of release of XP. Only started to happen after I downloaded Service Pack 1. But who knows! LOL. It's alright, not a big problem. I'm in the process of building another desktop and I have a laptop anyway. Thanks for everyone's comments/help/suggestions.

    XP Restarting/Rebooting

I assume that when you're referring to memory, you are talking about RAM correct? =) It's alright.. It's a 2 year old system that I built and I'm in the process of building a more top of the line system with new RAM of course and everything. Thanks. =)

    Warcraft III XP Problem

This error is caused by your Nvidia drivers. I believe you need to revert back to 3082 or whatever it was.. and not using the 4072 drivers. This should solve it. Several ppl where experience this when War3 launched. Use older drivers for now.

    XP Restarting/Rebooting

Last night was probably the most worst night that XP kept on rebooting and restarting or throwing itself in Stand By mode.. and then turn the HD back on.. and then right away shut it off. When I unplugged the damn thing and then turned it back on, it went right to the BIOS and said an error that the CPU was hanging at an unexceptional BUS/PCI speed (I think it was BUS speed) and told me to readjust cuz it was running in SAFE MODE in the BIOS at 100 mhz. The BUS speed looked normal to me and the PCI speed was 133 mhz.. so I don't see any problems there. What I did last night was reformat my HD and reinstalled Windows and didn't install SP1. So far, no problems. No unusal reboots or anything. Oh and yes, these are spontaneous boots out of no where. Scares the crud outta me when it happens cuz I'm not use to it, lol. I'm at work now for the next 8 hrs (typical day right? lol) and then I see what I can do with it. If I come home and see that it has rebooted, then it's gotta be something internal. =)

    Problems... very frustrated!

Okay.. here goes. I have just got a DSL connection with a DSL modem. I bought a Linksys 4-port Router so I can connect my computer and my new labtop together to share an internet connection. I have the DSL modem connected to the Router while having an ethernet cable connect to my ethernet port on my computer. For some reason, the data recieved from the internet comes directly from the modem, instead of goin' to the router and then to my ethernet adapter. I would hook up my laptop to the router and the connections are fine with the LED's but I can't get a connection with the laptop. Any suggestions? Using XP.

    Windows - Live - Speakers

Hmmmm.. lemme look into it. Could possibly be the new XP drivers. Try rolling back the drivers and then make the adjustments in the control panel and such. See if that works. I'll still look into it and see what else is the problem for ya.
