No problem. Glad you got it working!

Okay, I finally have both of my Desktop computer and my Laptop computer sharing an internet connection through my LinkSys 4-port Router. But there's another problem... after about 15-30 mins after I surf the web with my desktop computer, (my laptop just sitting there idle), I will suddenly lose my internet connection through my router using my desktop computer. So I jump onto the Laptop and that still has a connection, but magically, my desktop doesn't. My only way to fix it, is to go to Network Connections in my Control Panel (using XP) and I find my Network Adapter. I DISABLE it, and then I ENABLE it again. Problem solved. Why is this happening? Why can't I keep a constant connection through the router? I have to keep on disabling my adapter and then enable it again after web pages no longer respond. Both computers are using "Obtain an IP automatically." Any help or suggestions would be nice. Reason why I'm asking is because I do a lot of online gaming and I plan to have these 2 comps connected to the game service (Battle.net) while playing games, but if one computer keeps on no longer being connected to the router to share an internet connection after 15 mins of recieving/transmitting data, my games are spoiled. Thanks. Hykster

Problem solved. The router went faulty and bad. Replaced with a new one, works the first time right off the bat.

You might want to swap the 15GB HD and the 40GB HD. Instead of the 15 as a Master, use it as a Slave and the 40 as a Master. You'll notice a huge speed increase.

You'll want to go into your Sound control panel in XP, then under the "Speakers Settings" press the "Advanced..." button and then change the pull down menu to to 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers. Also, run "Surround Mixer" found in the Creative start menu and change the speaker settings to 5.1 speakers. Hit the TEST button and see if you get sound from all speakers (it'll do a sound check). This will solve your problem. Hykster **TIME EXTENSION!**

I've been talking with LinkSys Support over e-mail the past couple of days and they are saying that I should disable my XP firewalls on both systems. Well, they have been disabled from the start and it's still causing problems. What else would be killing the connection for no reason? The DHCP has addressed both IP's to both computers and it should keep them, but why would one of them act like it's trying to RENEW the IP.. which causes my killed connection until I re-enable it.

I thought it was the QoS that was causing the problems, so I disabled it and it still causes probs. What I found weird was that if I check the "STATUS" of my network adapter on my LAPTOP, it'll send out 24 billion packets but will recieve none. And it keeps continuing till I hit around 150 billion packets that were sent out and then stops. So I would disable the adapter and then enable it, and then it jumps right up there in the billions of packets sent. I'll try to post a Screenshot of it if that's hard to believe. I found it really unusual and I KNOW that shouldn't be happening. Otherwise, both computers talk to each other fine over LAN and everything else. I just keep on getting the desktop computer or vice versa to get their connection killed for no reason. It acts like it's trying to renew the IP address when it really shouldn't be changing at all. Anyways, thanks for the help once again, guys.

Okay.. I unplugged my laptop from my router cuz I had to take it to work and now I have it back home and plugged it into my LinkSys router, and I cannot get a internet connection. I currently have a LinkSys DSL 4-port switch Router (BEFSR41) and I'm having problems connection a second computer to the router to share an internet connection. I can get a connection through my desktop computer, but not through my laptop. But I can still access the LinkSys web setup pages on both computers at the same time (changed address to 192.168.1.5). On my ethernet adapter on my laptop, I chose "Obtain an IP address automatically" but I still can't get a connection. I had to set the Subnet mask on my router to 255.255.255.252 because that's what my DSL service uses. Is there a way I can establish a connection through my laptop and have it still configured to 255.255.255.252 instead of it defaulting to 255.255.255.0? (I tried setting it up manually in the network connections control panel but I still don't get a connection, but can access the router setup webpages from both comps.) I've tried resetting the router and the modem and nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Kevin

My friend has a: Pent II 500 512 MB PC133 RAM 8 GB HD (master) 40 GB HD (slave) SB Live 5.1 Gamer On-board Intel Video Chipset I've been trying to help him install a 3D video card on his system and nothing is working out. The card installs fine with the drivers and everything, but if we open up any type of media file that is a movie file (.mov, .mpg, .wmv) the system comes to a complete halt and a high-pitched "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep" sound comes through the speakers forcing you to reboot and run scandisk. I've tried 3, yes that's right... 3 different video cards. We've tried a Voodoo 3 3500, ATI Radeon 7000, and just tonight tried a VisionTek nVidia GeForce 2 MX 200 32MB, and still get the same results. Any time we open up a game and there's a cinematic sequence showing, does the high-pitched sound and complete stops the system. Also, ever since you install a 3D card in the system, he can no load up a CD to install something. You can double-click on it, but the system just hangs there with an hourglass. Then we go to the Task Manager and it says the computer is at 100% CPU Usage. Then I click on the Processes tab and several apps are moving up and down on the list. Then when you try to shut it down, it says a .dll error with a certain file. Then it came up with a "Guru Meditiation Failure". I was like.. What?!?! So we ran a scan on the drives for viruses, nothing found. So then we pulled out the card and used the cheapy, worthless Intel embedded chip and have no problems. I told him to reformat the drive and do a clean install or use Windows98SE, but he's not able to due to some "circumstances" from mom! lol.. Anyways... What would cause these types of problems? (we used updated drivers and got the same results) Thanks in advance for some feedback! Kevin "Hykster" Hyk

I helped install a new 300 watt max power supply on this Gateway system and took out the original 80 watt max power supply. Well, the same problem happens. A constant high pitch beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep is heard through the speakers and the system comes to a complete halt. His other "video card" is embedded onto the motherboard, but I have that disabled through the Device Manager. These problems only seem to happen when we install any type of 3D Video Card. Thanks for helping though. We are both quite confused and frustrated.

I absolutely have no problems running NBA Live 2001 on my Desktop (Windows XP Home) and on my Laptop (XP Pro). I've ran NBA 2001 with a Voodoo 3 3500 with no problems, updated card with a ATI Radeon 8500 AGP card and runs great. I have an ATI Radeon 7500 in my laptop and that also runs fine also. I've just tried it to see if it would work. What problems are you having? Hykster

I've already fixed it myself. Thanks anyways!

Thanks Sampson. I guess my friend does have a virus. Kinda weird because we updated his McAfee Virus Scanner and it never found anything, but then again, I never set it to do a Surface scan, just to check all files. I'll make sure I do that tonight for him and find it and hopefully get rid of it. Thanks again! You guys are a great help on the forum!

Yes of course! It was the only way to get the motherboard to use the other card in order to see anything on screen.

Quote: Honestly, I don't see why the LAN IP subnet mask of the router would make any difference since you are crossing over the router (the LAN IP of my router has a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, while the WAN/modem side has 255.255.248.0 and uses 24.160.x.x for the moment), and getting DHCP info from the modem to connect online. Just beware of disconnects because your ISP issues you a new IP and the router doesn't update properly. Yeah, the router had a 255.255.255.0 mask and the modem was using 255.255.255.252. So I just changed it on the router's side because that's the default for MSN. Oh wellz.. it's up and running.
-
Yeah, I can change the two independently to match all the ports of LAN and WAN. Yeah, I won't screw around with it. It's working now. No need to dink around with it anyways. Thanks again, clutch!

Clutch, Dirty Harry, and others: I finally got everything to work!!! Wanna know what the problem was?? MSN uses a Subnet Mask address of 255.255.255.252 and NOT 255.255.255.0. The router's LAN IP Subnet Mask address was set at 255.255.255.0 and not 255.255.255.252. So all I did was set the router's LAN IP Subnet Mask address to 255.255.255.252 to match MSN's DSL connection and BOOM-BADA-BING! It finally works! Now everything works! Thanks for all your help. I need to give myself credit on fixing it myself! So weird.. what service uses 255.255.255.252? I called MSN back and asked them why they use 255.255.255.252 and their reponse was to have the connection set up as a 1 on 1 connection that disables networking through routers because MSN does not want to support it. Therefore, they changed it from .0 to .252. Interesting isn't? Microsoft is the Devil. Anyways, things work! Thanks again! Kevin "Hykster" Hyk

Update.. I've changed the LinkSys Router Device IP to 192.168.1.5 to access the router setup pages. Now, I've restarted my computer and both the modem and the router (power-cycled them both) and turned them back on. I still CANNOT get a connection through the Router, only from a direct connection from my Modem to my PC.. never from the Modem-to-Router-to-PC. HELP! Looks like I won't be able to have a network after all......
-
Okay guys, hope you can figure this one out. Alright.. I have MSN DSL.. their Modem Stats page is 192.168.1.1 while the Router Setup page is also 192.168.1.1 also. If I have a direct connection just between my computer and my modem, I have an internet connection. If I run it through the router, I don't get an internet connection because 192.168.1.1 address is used by the Router and the modem needs that address to get a connection. So bascially the Router and the DSL Modem are cancelling each other out to get a connection. So, MSN Tech says that they only support a 1on1 direct connection which means that they don't support networked pc's sharing an internet connection. The MSN techinican said it's up to the customer (which is me) to figure out a way to move the LinkSys DSL Setup page of 192.168.1.1 to a different address so the Router can have access to the MSN Modem address of 192.168.1.1. Otherwise.. I guess I wasted money on a router and an ethernet card. Any ideas? Thanks! Hykster

Okay, I'll give these suggestions a try and I'll let ya know later on today. Have some things to take care of today first. =) Thanks for your help. I'll be back soon.

Even if I just disconnect my laptop from the router and try to just use my Desktop computer to get a internet connection through the router, I still get the "Cannot find page requested" error. Do I need to use the Network Wizard prog in WinXP to set something like a network up to share internet connections through a router?
-
Quote: If they are connected Modem->Linksys->Computer and you type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser the signal cannot go to the modem without passning the router, and should open the Linksys settings page. Now, if you have some USB connection bypassing the whole thing this could of course happen, but as our resident LAN guru Clutch already said: unplug the USB (for good). What happens then, and what happens if you do this without the modem plugged in? Two easy checks if you still have trouble after unplugguing the USB: Did you buy the Linksys new (i.e are you sure the settings are at factory default)? Are you sure the two involved cables are standard Ethernet cables (as opposed to crossover cables) ? H. I bought the LinkSys new and everything was in the box. My cables are the standard RJ-45 Ethernet cables.

Okay, I can access the router setup broswer page, but I am unable to access the internet connection with both computers. Both of them won't work now. Here's my current setup: DSL Modem into phone line, ethernet port from modem connected to WAN port on Router. Port 4 ethernet cable from router goin' to my desktop computer ethernet card... port 3 ethernet cable from router goin' to my laptop ethernet connection. Router says that it recognizes both port 3 and 4 and they are functioning correctly with the LED's on router. Click on Internet Explorer... "Cannot find page requested" error.

Gotcha, that's probably the problem.. lemme try it out and I'll see.
