Linksys Router droping connection intermittently
Masterfinn replied to Masterfinn's topic in Networking
Yes my router is on 24/7 and i guess for a few years now so i can see what your saying. I still however dont think its overheating as its in a well ventalated area and when i put my had on it anywere its just feels a little warm barely noticable. So far i tried to do a factory reset on the router then configured it back to what I wanted. I than upgraded the firmware again as when I did it before it might not have worked correctly who knows. Anyways its been a few days and it hasnet lost the connection yet (knock on wood) so i guess we will just have to sit and wait to see what happens in the next little bit. Thanx for the quick responce Masterfinn -
I have a linksys BEFSR41 router, that drops my connection intermittently. I have 4 computers hooked to this router then onto the interenet through a cable modem. Everything has been working great for a few years now but just a few weeks ago this problem occured. When it drops the connection I am still able to view all the computers on the local intranet and share files..etc I am also able to ping the router and the other machines no problem. But I can not get to the internet or ping outside the router. When this drop happens I either wait a few minutes (sometimes an hour or two) then the connection seems to be back up and I can get on the internet again. But what I usualy do is just hit the reset button on the router wait a few seconds then bamn.. back on the interent for the time being.( could be 5 min or could be a few days). I have tried to update the router to the newest firmware and still no luck. Also I have tried to hook one of the computers directly to the modem and it did not loose any connection so it has to be something with my router. The router is configured to my ISP via static IP. I double checked all these settings in my router and they havent changed from what they always were. And like I said before I placed these exact settings hardcoded into one of my machiens then hooked it to the cable modem directly bypassing the router and it worked flawlesly so I know these router settings are correct. Normaly each machine is set to DHCP to the router. I tried setting each machine with a static IP but no luck. I did some googling on this issue and found most peoples problem was they had to clone one of the machiens mac address to the router. I shouldnt have to do this as it has always worked before. But i will give it a try. Anyone out there know of anything else I could try or if there is something im missing. Thanx Masterfinn

I recently put in a second harddrive into one of my systems as a spare. It is a 60gig Maxtor. The bios finds the drive no problem and windows sees it fine as well. I formated the drive and i now use it to store files. The problem im having is ill be on my computer and go to access that second harddrive and it says it cant find the drive. Ill go in device manager and it wont be there anymore, Also in my computer and in disk manager its gone. Its like the drive just disapperd?..Whats weird is that this drive was originaly in a newer system and this never happend. But now that i put it in this older system this happens. What i usually do is just reboot and it finds it no problem and i can use the drive for a while and then it happens again and i have to reboot. The computer specs for the computer are: Intel PII 450Mhz CPU Intel 440bx Mobo ATI RageII Windows xp pro 4gig drive(windows) 60gig storage My only thoughts would be the powersupply might not have juice to power the two harddrives plus everything else. Im not sure though as the powersupply is a 350W which should be enough even though its a no-name powersupply. But like i say it was working in my newer system for ever with no problems which is also running a 350w power supply but a newer msi board with a P4. I thought maby the motherboard has restrictions but while trying to look up this problem, i found many people have larger newer drives on the 440bx motherbaords so i dont know. And yes i have updated to the newest bios for the mobo and drivers. And still nothing. Any suggestions would be great Thanx Masterfinn

Ya i seen that when i logged into the domain and not the local machine it made a folder %username%.DOMAIN as im useing the same username for my local and domain login. So you say i should just copy the folder under docs and settings from my local to domain. Thats what i was thinking had to be done but i just thought there might be a different way.. oh well ill just do that and see what happens. And yes i know i should have strong complex passwords, but im just haveing this network in my home and i dont need all these tough passwords.. and i have searched through and turned every password policy i could find to disable complex passwords and nothign has worked. but im not giving up yet.. i got my self into this messing around with server stuff and thats how you learn, so ill just keep at it, and i know ill be a server guru in no time.. HA!! Masterfinn

Hey all, I actually have two questions regarding an XP pro machine joining a 2003 domain. Frist things first, I have been using my XP box within a simple home network involving several xp and 98 machines. All is working great. What happend is I decieded to set up one of my spare machines as a domain server and have every other computer log into it. I am doing this becuase of the curiosity, and I always wanted to learn more about servers...etc..So right now i have the server setup as a domain, file and print server, now on to the questions 1. Everything is working great as all the comptuers xp & 98 can login and access there own home directories, shared fils, and printer, and my login scripts are all working. My question is, as i was using my xp box originaly by its self now that i loginto the domain i loose all my settings such as icons on desktop, background, startup configurations.. etc... This is kind of a pain as i can log onto my xp box on the local machine and all my settings are just the way i like them and then i log into the domain and its all gone. I kinda knew this was going to happen but i just dont know a work around. There should be a way to sync the accounts so when i log into the domain or local box the settings come up exactly the same. Anyone out there know how i can do this?...thanx now on to question 2 2. For all my users logining into the domain the servef has to have them with complex passwords. I want to be able to have any password i want. I tried to set all the group policies for password secutiry to disable for complex passwords. as well as the length to less characters..etc... the settings seem to save but when i go to try to change the passowrds it says they dont meet the minimum requirements for complexity ..etc.... i must be missing a step somewere.. Thanx to anyone who can help me out on either of my problems Masterfinn

I have many computers all with Windows XP Pro hooked together through a linksys router to the net. All file sharing works great so no probs their. My question is: is that one of the computers has a larger harddrive in it, that i use as back up. What i want to do is the following. Say "computer A" is this computer with the large drive in it, and i have "computer B" that makes a folder (which ill call folder on this drive for its own personal uses. Now "computer B" would like only them be able to gain access to this "folder B", so no one else can get access to it. Say if "computer C" goes over the network and tries to access it, it will say access denied. Now on all my computers there is only one user for each. When i try to set permissions on these folders it only allows me to set them for users on the machine itself. Is there anyway i can set them for user on another box in my network?.. i havent been able to figure it out. I think the only way i can do this is if i set "computer A" up as a Domain server and have them all logged into the domain. Thanx for any suggestions Masterfinn

I think i have it solved, i downloaded a WinsockXPfix utility, as i know sometimes the winsock goes titsup. So i installed that, and when i rebooted it worked!! i was amazed.. after trying everything else. Well i guess thats the only way you learn right.. Masterfinn

HI, I have a computer that is haveing troubles accessing the internet. I have three computers all hooked together through a Linksys router. A friend asked me to take a look at their computer cause it could not get on the internet so I hooked it up through my router like I do with so many machines in the past and sure enough no interent. I have tired the following: - manually setting connection speed - trying different nic - trying another cable - disable/enable internet connection firewall - trying DCHP and static IP's - try to connect directly to internet(no router) - blowing away all network settings and redo them - enableing IPX/SPX and NetBios - enableing Netbeui All these attempts have failed to give me inernet access. I have also took a look in the services, and everything seems to be started which should, and the event veiwer isnt showing any errors. I also checked the hosts file to see if there was any browser highjacking but nothing, i did a scan with ad-aware just to be safe, and with NortonAV. Its weird casue when connected to the router I can see and trasfer files to and from all the other computers. Also when you first get connected the icon the taskbar when double clicked shows many packets sent, but 0 recieved. Thats why im thinking it is indeed something with the computer. Im thinkings its a services thats not working or somehting.. If anyone out there can help me please do.. Thanx, Masterfinn

It shows the player and everything but I cant get it to save and capure the video at that time when i pause it. I have tried to paste it into Paintshop pro and photoshop still nothing. I have also tried third party screen caputre software.. still nothing. Its weird casue it shows the video part of it when i paste it in and the video file is still open But as soon as i close the video file and go back into paint its gone. Weird Computer freezing problems
Masterfinn replied to Masterfinn's topic in Everything New Technology
Update... I have tried to set the DDR voltage at 2.7V and that didnt help. Also i have tried to take out one of the sticks and run in single channel, still same thing. I then tried the other stick and then all the slots on the mobo and still same thing. I also tired to disable the Hyper-Threading feature in the bios, and still same thing. I Still have not yet ruled out the RAM as being an issue. Ill just have to find someone with some DDR sticks and test them in my machine, Also i want to get another vidcard to test in the machine so i can see if its mine or not.. Ill post back with an update once i have tried these changes. Thanx, Masterfinn -
Weird Computer freezing problems

I have just ran those two programs and everythings good to go. I have check the cpu temp and its at 42 degrees C. Which is normal for this processor. Im just looking into now a program to find the gpu temp but still no luck in finding anything..... any other suggestions why im freezing up? Overheating maby an issue, but my case does have excellent ventalation with its exahst fan on the top and side, plus i have a fan in the back and front of the case. Thanx, for the quick response Masterfinn -
Im Running windows 2000 pro with sp4 and all upadates. The problem is my computer sometimes ill just be doing nothing and bamn!!, froze. The mouse wont move, and ctrl+alt+del, does nothing, i have to hard boot. Then once its rebooted it might last a minute, or 5 days before the next freeze. Sometimes ill just wake up in the morning and see that my comptuer is frozen. Nothing shows up in the event viewer at all, and it seems to freeze randomly. Im starting to think its a hardware issue, my system specs are: MSI Neo-LS 865PE motherboard, with a P4 2.4c HT cpu 2x512MB PC3200 Dual Channel RAM ATI Radeon 9800pro 128MB Sony DRU-510A DVD burner 40G Maxtor ATA133 7200rpm 60G Maxtor ATA133 7200rpm X-Dreamer case w/350W ps I was suspecting the Video card, becuase i read lots of reviews of ppl having problems with freezing. I started out with the catalyst 3.7, then up to 3.8, and now the 3.9, and still all freezing. I aslo have turned off the VPU recovery from the ATI control panel and still nothing. I have all the updates for the mobo, and all drivers are updated for all other hardware, and im still experiencing these freezing. If anyone knows how I can fix this please help. Thanx, Masterfinn

I have an older computer that has worked for years and finally the key board has just stoped working. I have tried other AT keyboards and still nothing. I know these keyboards work as i have tested them in other old systems i have laying around. Is there anyway i can hook up another keyboard to it and get it to work?.. i have know idea what kida mobo it is. It does have headers on it to put brackets in such as a usb bracket. right now the brackets that are connected to thses headers are things like serial port for the mouse and parallel port. So i guess i could try to put a usb braket in and try a usb keyboard. but i dont own one so ya.. is there any other way around this problem as the computer is great but now that the key board dont work its usless to me.. Any help would be great thanx Masterfinn

Iv seen this happen a couple times before and what it turned out to be was the virus scanner on the computer was set to do scans automatically in the background and every now and then without doing anything on the computer the floppy drive light would light up and sound like it was trying to read it. It didnt crash becuase of it but that could be something related to that. So I would look into if you have a virus scanner and see if it is set to run in the background to check your drivers automaticaly includeing the floppy. It aslo wont hurnt to try another floppy drive. Masterfinn
