battle of the computers

@Wicked101 i'm Greek and I am fluent in German, so I know what Geil means, hehe. The ram is running perfectly fine, I was using some generic Samsung PC3200 memory which was hitting a wall at 244MHZ FSB onwards. With this Geil memory it runs at 274MHz, this is quite an unexpected improvement....

Cannot (!) delete files

Here's is the situation: I brought the removable hard disk from work, and copied over some mp3s to a folder I call 'Unsorted MP3s'. When I actually found the time to move the mp3s to other folders, I got a nice little message saying 'Cannot move xxxxxxxx: Access is denied. Make sure you have access to the folder and that the disk is not write protected' . So I did the obvious, checked that the folder was not 'read only', scanned for viruses, and i STILL cannot move (copy works fine) a single file from that folder OR the folder itself. Any suggestions what is happening and how can I beat the crap out of this Windows imperfection? thanks in advance, tsonta101

battle of the computers

Recenly got some Geil PC4200 memory, been able to run at 274MHz FSB, that is 3.84GHz for my poor 2.8 Northwood P4. Since it's been stock aircooled, I am planning on getting some decent cooling for it and the northbridge. Hell, this is an endless race of cash being thrown at my box......

My First PC....

An old Hyundai Super 16TE for me, that is 8bit 8088 cpu (10Mhz, yeah!!!), 640k of ram, EGA (16 color) graphics at 320x240 and color 14' monitor, sound courtesy of soundblaster 1 (16 similtaneous voices), seagate 40mb hdd, 5.25 and 3.5 low density floppy (360k and 720k respectively). Software-side, there was MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.0, with Wordperfect some drawing apps, MS Basic 3, Pascal and C. That was a killer machine at the time, *awesome* graphics, huge hdd and a price tag of iirc, around €1400..... that was a nice time, where you didn't upgrade every 3months or so......

Overclocking question (RAM related)

Shed some light here people... I've got two sticks of PC3200 512MB RAM. My cpu is a P4 2.8 Northwood and runs stable at 245FSB (on a Gigabyte 8IK1100 rev2). The RAM works with a multiplier of 1.66. 245 is the maximum stable overclock with 2 sticks of RAM. With only one stick it goes (stable) to 256, and it POSTs at 266, but hangs before I see the desktop. I am thinking of getting some PC4000 or PC4400 RAM (which have the headroom for FSB speed up to 280-290) and I am asking is my cpu going to run at more than 245FS or not? If the cpu/mobo will be helped by the faster memory then it is worth it. If not, I do not want to fork out the cash only to run my memory at 1:1. Any ideas/experiences much appreciated
7. Yes. A long time ago, I was trying to overclock a Cyrix 686 cpu, and the pc would not post. So I try to locate the cmos clear jumper (which was labelled J2), but I could only find a JP2 jumper. What the heck, I put in the jumper, switch on the pc, and BANG, three capacitors blew! I later saw tha the JP2 jumper was the connector for the system fan. My bad! :S

How do you connect to the internet?

ADSL for me, 384/128 for 49 euros/month .....i know.....

Average CPU Temp (Normal Workload)

Are there any fans in your case to take the air in/out? Also, what graphics card do you have? For example a Radeon 9800 runs VERY hot on stock cooling. So, combine that with the trapped air in the case having nowhere to go and you have a very hot case. Which in turn does not help the processor cool down. Add a couple of fans (even standard 8cm fans help) and tell us if temps drop.
10. I voted for the 60s-70s... I would have loved to have lived in Chicago or in Cicily, Italy. This is probably me being influenced by the Godfather movies, atmosphere, dress code of the time... not for the music of the time, though... Music wise, I'd love to have been a teenager in the 80s (and I only was 3yrs old in 1980......).

13. Hi people, I could really use your insight on this! Here is the story: I bought a usb2 enclosure, to put a spare HDD I had lying around, so that i could use it for file transfers, instead of burning cds and dvds all the time. So I hook it up to my pc (which is usb2 capable), do some tests, plug it unplug it, nothing broken, everything's ok. I go to the office, hook it up to my pc (only usb1 capable), thinking that it's only gonna be slower. But no, whenever i wanted a file over 50Mb to be copied to the external hdd, it would start copying and then at some poing say that a delayed write could not be performed on this disk, please try to save elsewhere. Any file under 50Mb was ok. So I started downloading chipset drivers, up[censored] almost everything, even tried other pcs. The same happened, unless i hooked the drive to a usb2 capable pc. So, any ideas, workarounds....I really cannot be zipping and spanning files with a 50Mb limit..... Anything is much appreciated!!!

USB2 external HDD error (delayed write .....)

Please do ask your friend, this is really frustrating.... I have tried copying files one by one, but when i get a file as big as 200mb, it starts copying and then the timer goes, 1 minute left, 2 minutes left, 3 minutes left and then it says 'delayed write yadayada.....'. Beer is on me if your friend has a solution for this problem!

Pentium4 3.0GHz Prescott

This is Intel's alleged Hyperthreading technology at work. It creates a second logical processor, and tells you that its resources are whatever cpu cycles are not used by processor no1 (the actual one). Your memory speed is 200Mhz and DDR means that it's doubled (that is 400MHz) - much like a P4's FSB is 200MHz quadpumped = 800MHz.
16. Hi everyone, I have a problem with Call Of Duty - United Offensive. I start the game, select New Game, the 1st mission loads at about 20% and then it says Script Compile Error. I've googled around and are zillions of people with this problem. And noone seems to have found a workaround for this. I was wondering if anyone here has a solution! Any suggestion is welcome, thanks
17. Man, this is by far the most outrageous request I've read so far! My friend, I bet you haven't read the terms and conditions for this forum.... Take cover, you are about to be flamed! Where are the mods when you need one!!?!?! PS. Like someone said, 'if you like the software, buy it!'

Doom 3 compatability issues, openGL shuts down...

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the GFMX4000 is not a speed demon. You need more serious power in your graphics division. That card is very very weak, not to mention the 64MB of ram it has. Honestly, this graphics card can run need for speed underground fine, but doom3 is another story. For example, I am running an overclocked P4 @ 3.55, an overclocked FX5600 and 1GB of ram, and there are places in doom3 that the game says 10-15fps. In 800x600, high detail.

copying to dvd rw- and rw+

Have you formatted the dvd disc? They do not come preformatted, so you can't write directly on them.

Which one?

So, you want to get 1. a Radeon X300 PCI-Express 128MB (first link) 2. a Radeon 9200 PCI SE 128MB (second link) 3. a GF5200 PCI 256MB (third link) Performance wise (and if you have a PCI Express port) the X300 is a Ferrari, compared to the capped version of (2) you are looking, and the vanilla (3). To be more exact, the X300 will play Doom3 very well (I imagine, I only have a GF5600), while the other two will quit on you. But, what I am puzzled about is why would you even consider looking at PCI cards, when you have a PCI Express port....

Average CPU Temp (Normal Workload)

That is when my pc is just sitting, doing nothing (43 celcius to be exact). I have a P4 2.8 Northwood, oc'ed to 3.55. Temp for stock speed would be around the 39 mark. Cooling is 2 12cm fans (1 intake, 1 exhaust) and a blowhole on the side panel (no fan), on top of the processon.

WinTV Problems

there are a couple of things that you can try..... 1. update your bios to the latest (also what's your motherboard?) 2. update the sound card drivers (i had problems with mine and my wintv) 3. is your cpu overclocked? if yes, return it to stock speed and try to configure the channels then.........

Two computers unable to see each other

If you are running any kind of firewall (software like norton internet security or hardware on your router), add the ip addresses of the two pcs as 'trusted addresses'. norton internet security definately wants that. hope to have helped

Question about mixing memory brands

thatsteveguy is right. The second piece of RAM that you describe is SDR, not DDR. Apart from the working incompatibility of the two pieces of memory you have, i believe there is hardly a MB in the market that has slots to put them in at the same time. They may look the same physically, but they are not - take a close look at where the middle notch is situated.....
