    Geforce or Radeon?

As far as Doom III is concerned, check the 'How's Doom III treating you?' thread, and follow a link towards the last posts. Some people have put up a page, showing computer specs and fps in Doom III. With a 5600 you would play it in 1024x786, high details (not ultra), vsync off, at around 20-22 fps..... draw your own conclusions. As for the 150$, that would probably get you a GF5700/GF5750 (brand depending) here in Greece. For about 15$ more you can get a Radeon X600, or maybe a cheap GF5900. You MB has (I am guessing) the Intel Extreme Graphics, and compared to that the GF5200 is a speed demon. Bare in mind that if you want to get a PCI-Express card, you'll need to get a newer MB as well... Happy hunting!

Does GeForce Card is good to play movies?

sampson is right. most of today's (and yesterday's) graphics cards will happily play videos in every imaginable format. so the problem must lie in the quality of the video. try watching a dvd for example, which should have 100% crisp picture. vcd's (especially 1 movie in 1 dics) aren't known for their quality when compared to a dvd movie...

    Geforce2 GTS or integrated graphics

By all means use the GeForce GTS! It's about 20 times faster/better/more reliable than the onboard S3 chip. Do not forget to download new drivers for it, from www.nvidia.com
  5. It's the first virus to target the Series60 smartphones. All other mobile phones are not affected. As we all know, other virii might follow . You are infected if a) someone sends you the virus via bluetooth (and you accept the installation package - dumm!) you install it - even dummer! I'd like to see comments from Symantec or McAfee or any other virus hunter..............

    RAID 0 questions

Hello people, I am thinking of setting up a SATA RAID 0 on my Gigabyte 8IK1100. I know it's a software RAID (the integrated ichr5 can do RAID 0 with winxp), but I still want to try. So, when I'll have two SATA disks, I will hook them up on the 1st and 2nd SATA connectors. Then what? As far as I can see now there is no option to build the array from the bios (i don't know if the option will appear, if it detects two sata disks). So there must be some utility/program that builds the array before windows boots. If so what's that? And lastly, when i create the array, it will format the disks as a whole, and then will i be able to partition it? If anyone has previous experience with building an array with a ichr5 mobo, please help! Any ideas much appreciated!

what the hell happened to this forum

well, it might be the case, that noone faces any software/hardware problems, microsoft has dealt with all non-perfect aspects of windows/office etc ............... .......yeah right! You are right, the forum has lesser and lesser traffic.....I have no idea why......

    Hello, I'm new here :)

Hey ServerMechanic, welcome to the board! This site is one of the greatest source for news, not to mention the forum (no, i do not work for ntcompatible.com). There are some v-e-r-y knowledgeable people in here. I've been browsing ntcompatible.com since 1999, it was recommended by a friend. Really glad that took his advice

    RAID 0 questions

A follow up. I got the second SATA disk this morning, I hooked it up on the motherboard, right after POST there was another screen. It said 'Press Ctrl-I' to setup the array and there was it! Pick the disks to form the array, pick mode (there was RAID0 and RAID1) and stripe size. Windows setup found the array as a huge unpartitioned drive and after another windows installation hew I am! Speed has improved, not tromendously though. I am using two Maxtor disks (info here). I am using HD Tach 2.7 and Sandra 2004 Single SATA drive: burst read about 84MB/sec, writes 48 Two SATA drives RAID0: burst read about 116MB/sec, writes 59 Thanks for all the input guys

    RAID 0 questions

Quite a read that was Alecstaar! Yes, I can always use good old Disk Management to make the disks dynamic. There's also Intel's Application Accelerator RAID Edition that i've installed. And that forces me to install windows, and then create the array? According to Intel's Application Accelerator RAID Edition documentation I will lose every bit of info in the disks that will form the array. So ok, i create the array and i assume that i will then be able to create partitions, format, install windows etc.... Thanks for all the help, hopefully my next post will be done when i've set the array and windows and everything..... fingers crossed!

    MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel

There is NO way, to my knowledge, that a microsoft gameport ff sidewinder wheel or joystick will work with a usb converter. I have tried and tried, browsed zillions of forums but no solution! The wheel/joystick will get power from the pc, but there is no way to correctly recognise it under the Game Controllers. My sidewinder ff joystick would only be recognised as a microsoft 3D sidewindor joystick. Status: not connected.... A feasible solution I can see for your case, is to get a Creative Extigy and connect the wheel there. Sorry to pull your hopes down....
  12. Hi everyone, a couple of hours ago, I installed a demo and I was happily playing, when my pc froze (see my sig for specs). Ctrl-alt-del wouldn't work, so I shut it down by keeping the power button pressed. I pressed it again, fans and hard drives began spinning and everything shut down again. That's odd I thought and tried again and again. Sometimes the pc would come to life for a second and sometimes for a whole couple of minutes. Nothing on the screen, no error codes from the beeper, not even the 'everything ok' beep. So, I took the fx5600 card out, stuck an MX440 in and nothing again. Ok it's not the video card, because it still works on another pc (the very one I am using now) Is it the M/B? Although the power led is on (for the duration the pc is on) Is the power supply? [edit: although it's a very reliable unit, I've had it for over a year, I've tested it again and it's ok.] Is it the CPU? Is it the RAM? I can't test the cpu or the fx5600 cause this old pc cannot take either. I even pulled everything (except a ram stick, cpu and video card) out from the m/b and it still won't boot. Also, nothing on the m/b shows damage (like a blown capacitor etc). This setup has been working over a month now, although I must confess that I've overclocked it from the moment I got my hands on it. I am contacting the hardware store I got it from, but I am asking for any ideas? Thank you!

Hardware Failure...Help me identify what's fried!

I've already tried removing everything from the board, but it still wouldn't boot properly. I'm almost convinced that it can't be the cpu, pentium4 cpus just lower their clock speed if they overheat. I phoned the hardware store and they 've asked me to send the cpu and motherboard back. I'll keep you posted.

What's better, a vid card with 32mb AGP or 64mb PCI?

agreed, the radeon would be far faster
  15. tsonta101

What's better, a vid card with 32mb AGP or 64mb PCI?

Have you got something specific in your hands? For example, an AGP TNT2 Ultra w/64MB would be slower to a PCI GeForce MX2 w/32MB. As a rule, an AGP card *should* be faster (only because it is newer), but then again there are exceptions (like the one above)

    Different upgrade paths...

Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of upgrading my ageing machine. I have made up my mind (or so I think :S, hehe). This is a three-fold question. 1. Gigabyte 8IK1100 mobo. That is going to be my choice for various reasons. I was wondering if anyone of you out there owns one, so that you could tell me any troubles/cool things you've experienced with it. Also... 2. Does the 2.6 or the 2.8 Pentium 4 overclock higher? If you own (and even if you don't) the above mentioned board, how high have you overclocked your P4 2.6/2.8? Moreover, I am planning on using the stock Intel HSF, not a third party HSF or watercooling. And lastly... 3. The mobo has 6 DIMM slots and I am getting 1Gb or PC3200 RAM (the choices I have here are Samsung generic and Generic generic ). Should I get 4x256 or 2x512? Thanks for all you input, people.

upgrade to xp and machine doesnt turn off :(

Look at your Power Options in your Control Panel. If I am guessing correctly, there should be an APM tab, with an option to enable the Advanced Power Management. Tick it, restart and now your machine should shut down correctly.

    Different upgrade paths...

Quote: ... but you'll have a higher FSB if you use the 2.6. Yes, that is obvious. In some reviews that I have seen for the 8IK1100 (albeit with a 2.4GHz P4), it managed to pull around 253 to 255 FSB. With a 2.4 P4 that would equate to 3.06 at most. So, what I am really asking is will a 2.6 run at 3.31 (13x255) and a 2.8 at 3.57 (14x255) -- ok, maybe not that high, but is there anyother limiting factor, that would not allow the 2.6 and 2.8 chips to reach those speeds? thanks

    ACER DC300 ( Digital Camera)

    win 2000 and voodoo 1

Voodoo1......old memories I remember buying one (Orchid 3D Voodoo with 4MB ram) for £175 (September 1997). Awesome graphics for that time.... Need For Speed II or Unreal Postminister, anything would be faster than a Voodoo1 today... you must be very sentimentally attached to it, something I totally understand *sigh*

    ACER DC300 ( Digital Camera)

vivekh_1979, welcome to the board! help is on the way. Google. Search for 'acer dc300 xp driver' and it's the second result. Isn't that sweet? http://www.benq.com/cameras/legacy/camera_d300.html Hope it works! PS. I can't help it. I am going to let it out. And I am not a 'malakas' (for those familiar with greek phraseology), but that driver took me around a minute to find! I agree that the main purpose of a message board is to help each other and to exchange experience. But that person asking for someone to take the trouble, help them and then email them the solution, only obliges me to believe that their first login was actually the last one. I would suppose that it would take you far more time to register with NTcompatible.com (if you already knew the board), let alone search for a [ad] GREAT [/ad] message board. vivekh_1979, I am not emailing the link to you, but I am here waiting for the dialogue to continue.
