How to update Win2k's 'repair' folder?
snakefoot replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You don't have to make and ERD with Ntbackup to get a registry-backup in the repair-folder. One can also "just" create a system state backup (place the bkf on a local drive) and the same thing will happen. Though if you are only interested in the registry files, then you should take a look at the freeware tool EruNT -
i can't login on windows xp, i've tried everything
snakefoot replied to bulleke's topic in Everything New Technology
If WinXP is installed on a NTFS partition then standard MS-DOS will not be able to read/write files on such a partition. When you say that you cannot login does it mean: 1. You don't know what user-account exists ? 2. You are using the welcome screen, but it contains no user-icons ? 3. You know the name of an user-account, but you don't know the password to the account ? 4. You know the name and the password to an account, but Windows XP generates an error during login ? If you are using WinXP Home, then booting in safemode should give you access to the builtin Administrator-account where the password is blank. You could try to use a "special" bootdisk to reset the password on a known account (With whatever risks it might introduce) Btw. Are you using WinXP Pro or Home ? -
Icon background (not text) black or white on Win2000

Had a similar issue after upgrading Internet Explorer, and found these solutions (Though it was the deletion of the iconcache that solved the problem for me) Repair incorrectly displayed icons -

Hi-Performance for 2k/XP/2000 56k OR Cable
snakefoot replied to akiss's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Incase some one is going to apply these registry entries mindlessly then some small corrections: Tcpip TcpMaxDupAcks (The Default value of 2 is usually recommended) SynAckProtect (A value of 2 will disable Windows Scaling(Tcp1323Opts=3) and it is not supported by WinXP/2k3) TcpNumConnections (The default value of 16 million is probably a good value as it limits max concurrent connections, though it seems that the value only has importance in early versions of NT4) MaxConnectionsPerServer (This value belongs to another registry-key to have the wanted effect) MaxConnectionsPer1_0Serve (This value belongs to another registry-key to have the wanted effect) LanmanWorkstation AutoShareWks (This value belongs to another registry-key to have the wanted effect) AutoShareServer (This value belongs to another registry-key to have the wanted effect) -
It would be neat if the head line for an article had different color than the bottom line of the article (Or no bottom line at all). Because when I scroll through todays news then I keep reading the bottom lines .

Looking much better now, thanks Less important thing is the day-divider, think it might be more useful if it had a different color, so one would actually notice that one had gone past todays news. One could also consider not having the day divider as this is an international site, where people have all sorts of time-zones.

Maybe check for entries in your hosts file

Probably a codec issue: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx If you are still using Media Player 6.4 then Microsoft have created this nice codec pack: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9be479f8-3b3f-491d-9284-2e1a8fae4584

I recommend using RefreshForce, which changes the properties for your monitor, so it can only handle one refreshrate for a certain resolution. (Instead of being dependent on the type of Video Adapter and driver versions) http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ I'm using it for my GF4 Ti4400 and it works wonders (Also allow you to configure your Monitor profile beyond the original refreshrate limits, though this is not always recommended)

Have you tried to access the Lyra using the parallel port ? (If you can, then you might consider upgrading the Lyra firmware) Have you tried to plug the Lyra directly into USB on the computer ? (Not using an USB hub, maybe try the different USB ports) Have you other USB devices connected to your computer ? (If so, then disconnect them as they might interfere with the Lyra) Have you tried to connect the Lyra to another computer ? (Just to make sure the Lyra works properly) Have you checked Windows Update to see if any updates for USB has been released for Windows Me ? Have you checked your motherboard manufacture's homepage, and see if new bios-versions or usb/chipset-drivers have been released ?

It also works nice if replacing all instances of HIDE, (notice the ",") with nothing. Never the less make a backup of sysoc.inf before editing the file.

XP / SERVER 2K3 SERVICES COMPARISON GUIDE?
snakefoot replied to djelite's topic in Customization & Tweaking
There are different default settings for the services in Win2k3 depending on the server edition (Standard, Enterprise,Datacenter, Web), but maybe this link can provide the information you want: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtec...lt_settings.asp Though I would probably go for service guide made for WinXP like this one: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm -
I have just tried using OEMINFO.INI and OEMINFO.BMP (In Win2k though) and they work fine when placed in %Windir%\System and also in %Windir%\System32

XP problem with shared network drive
snakefoot replied to CyberGenX's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Maybe you need to disable simple filesharing on WinXP: 1. Start Button -> My Computer 2. In the menu of My Computer select "Tools" -> "Folder Options" 3. In "Folder Options" select the "View" fan 4. Uncheck the setting "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" -
Quote: 2: my PC has a tendany to alt-tab progs by itself, the longer its left on the worse it gets. i THINK this has been goign on longer than ive had this keyboard. Any idea why? no messages pop up, it just happens It could be caused by setting the ForegroundLockTimeout to 0 (Default 200000 milisec). http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/windows/tips.html#TASKBAR

To my knowledge you need to modify the SYSOC.INF: http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/tips.html#HIDDEN_COMP

I have been reading about the SystemPages registry entry, since a site reported that it would gain performance : http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=301 (Though a little faulty since a page is 4 kb) Well I looked in my own registry and found that my value (Win2k Adv. Srv. SP2 Without editing) decimal = 503808 hex = 7b000 This puzzled me since this would equal it to 2 gb of memory. When reading Tip 2356 http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBE/tip2300/rh2356.htm It says that the display adapter would exhaust the system pages. And that changing the value to 36000 decimal will solve it. When reading the similar MS KB article : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q226064 It says that one should "increase" the value to 36000 ? (Remember I have decimal value of 500000) Also I looked at this other MS KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q247904 It says that the 4gb memory is divided in two 2 gb parts (Process and Kernel allocation). The kernel part is then divided in page pool and system pages. The division between the page pool and system pages is fixed and cannot be changed after boot up. And then says that when running server with Terminal Services one should "limit" the SystemPages value to 50000 or below. If not limiting the SystemPages it will cause that only 50 users can connect to the Terminal Service. This leaves me with some question, do you know the answer ? Why are the first MS KB articles conflicting ? (Says that one should increase from 500000 to 36000 ?) Why are the second MS KB article saying that one should give no value over 50000 ? (When default having 500000 ?) Why are the default systempages value(2 gb) equal to the size of the kernel allocation (2 gb) ? (No use for page pool ?) Hope you can help -Rolf

installing Windows 98 after Windows XP
snakefoot replied to lwachters's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: Yes I did ... Guess I should change "two seperate partitions" to "two seperate primary partitions". Since it was intended on people who had WinXP installed alone, then I presumed it was placed on a primary partition. Actually what you have been doing is the "1 partition" thing, with the twist that you have placed some of WinXP files on a different partition. (Win98 and WinXP is not seperated as the install of Win98 affects your WinXP) -
installing Windows 98 after Windows XP
snakefoot replied to lwachters's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: But not if my NTFS partition is the second logical drive on an extended partition ;( ;( ;( I've found the BEST solution of them all ... REÏNSTALL WIN XP Then you didn't do the steps I listed. An easier way is to fix your situation is to boot from the CD, go to recover console (F10 i think) and write the command "fixboot".
