installing Windows 98 after Windows XP
snakefoot replied to lwachters's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: I've done 1, 2, 3 and 4 How do I do step 5? Can I set the NTFS partition as an active partition with FDISK? Or are there other utilities? If only setting the active partition, then FDISK can do it no matter the primary partitions format (A little guide to help) : http://www3.sympatico.ca/rhwatson/dos7/u-fdisk-1.html#active -
If you have been setting up user policies then you might consider setting the service "Security Accounts Manager" to Automatic.

Quote: According to the Task Manager my XP kernel uses about 20Mb at startup. I can't remember the exact figures off hand but I doubt it would have been much larger for 2000 My standard install of Win2k Pro takes 40 MByte RAM(Idle), and my standard install of Win2k Adv. Srv. takes 100 MByte RAM(Idle) So with the Win2k Adv. Srv. one should be able start two IE's and then get into pagefile heaven.

My Network Places Annoyance in XP

Right click the comment-column and Check it off to remove it. -
*More rumors* It is said that WinXP SP1 also update drivers without asking. Some seem to have solved it by reinstalling chipset Drivers (Ex. VIA 4in1) again along with Display Adapter Drivers (Ex. Nvidia).

Quote: Yes, Let's say you have a HD with 2 partitions C: D: You install 9x to D:. Then IO.SYS,MSDOS.SYS,COMMAND.COM will be placed on C: while 9x is on D:. An entry is placed in MSDOS.SYS by 9x which points to the D:\Windows directory so it knows where to start Windows. Ok I was thinking about keeping Win9x entirely for it self without infecting other partitions with it files besides it own In my early days as multi booter I had a lot of trouble when having several OS's on the same partition (Probably because I didnt know what I was doing but that is another story ). But since then I have always made sure to keep the OS's strictly apart.
-
Quote: It doesn't matter what partition/HD 9x is on. All that matters is that IO.SYS,MSDOS.SYS,COMMAND.COM reside on the primary boot partition. I have tried installing Win9x on a third primary partition on the Master HDD, and added it to the Win2k bootmenu on the first primary partition on the Master HDD(where the bootsect.dos got placed) using bootpart. So if having a master and slave HDD then Win9x can be installed on the Slave HDD if it contains a primary partition without complaining ?
-
Quote: No. Sorry if I put it wrong. I set the 4 Gb as the primary, just to install 98 on it, but now the 60 is the primary, and the 4 is the slave. Don't think Win9x/Me likes to be on another HDD than the Primary.

Downgrading from Win2k Advanced Server to basic Server

If you dared you could have tried NTSwitch by 03am : http://www.03am.com/ntswitch.shtml You can download here : http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/files.html Though I would probably prefer to take full backup using NTBackup before trying it out. -
I have found some links to different guides, maybe you can find one you like : http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/services.html#OTHER_GUIDES

installing Windows 98 after Windows XP
snakefoot replied to lwachters's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Well I have seen many who installed Win2k/WinXP on top of their Win98 and then dual booting. Not sure how many problems it causes, besides some fighting about who owns the "Program Files" directory (Iexplore + Outlook). So doing it the other way around should not cause more problems. (If Win2k/WinXP starts acting weird then one can always run SF C) I have stopped defragging my drives, since I have not been able to notice any before/after difference. Besides the good feeling of knowing that ones bytes is positioned correctly But I would also at any time recommend having a partition for each OS (Though the single partition solution is many times the easiest for most) -

Quote: Well, it wont be defraged it will be fragmented. And, after awhile this starts to degrade exponentially causing various errors, instability and slow down. I recall WinXP like Win98 keeps tracks of program sceneraios so it tries to order the programs so they startup quicker. Maybe they are just conflicting each other and seeing different scenarios and tries to defrag differently. About Win98 slowing and becoming weird, that just sounds like the standard Win9x syndrome. Or does it happen after a few days ? -

Quote: Try defragging in XP, then boot to 98 and do it. It will be totally 'fragged.' Just of curiosity what exactly happens in Win98 when done a defrag i WinXP ? (The term fragged is a little vague) I'm using Win2k and Win98 (On different partitions though) I have only noticed that Win2k don't like that you use Win98 to empty your recycle bins. -

I can see 3 solutions : 2 seperate partitions without 3rd party boot-manager : 1. Convert the WinXP partition to NTFS (Will then be hidden for Win98 so drive letters will not be moving around whether using Win98 or WinXP) 2. Create another primary partition 3. Set the new primary partition as active boot partition 4. Boot the machine and install Windows 98 on the new primary partition 5. Change the active partiton to the WinXP partition. 6. Use this utility to add the Win98 to the WinXP bootmanager : http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm 2 seperate partitions with 3rd party boot-manager : 1. Create another primary partition 2. Set the new primary partition as active boot partition 3. Boot the machine and install Windows 98 on the new primary partition 4. Install the 3rd party bootmanager on the new primary partition 5. Add the WinXP partition to the boot-manager 1 partition : 1. Make sure that WinXP partition is not using NTFS 2. Install Windows 98 (Try to avoid using the same Windows-directory as WinXP) 3. Now when booting it will always boot into Windows 98 4. To fix this boot from the WinXP CD and go to recovery console 5. And execute the command "fixboot" it will activate the WinXP again (And it should put Win98 in the BOOT.INI file) -
Disabling "Restore Network Connections" startup di
snakefoot replied to lager_brains's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Just a rumor I have heard, when using the "Map-Network-Drive"-Wizard (Explorer -> Tools -> Map Network Drives...) If you hold down the SHIFT-Key when you press the "Finish"/"Ok" button, then it will not annoy you if it cannot map the drive at bootup. -
Where do I disable Windows Automatic Update in the registry?

JSI Inc have just been updated for your needs http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBL/tip5500/rh5587.htm -
Just changed from SCSI to IDE, and had uninstalled my SCSI controller and then my cd-rippers stopped working. (They would only recognize my Daemon Tool virtual cd-drive) Tried to install ASPI 4.71 but no cigar, but then I find this and it works like a charm. Thanks for finding a solution for me

The link to the bootdisk script at soundcardcentral.com seems to have been deleted. Is it possible for you create a mirror ? If you can I would be happy.

I just changed from the built in Administrator account to a new account. First tried being a power user, but that was way too restrictive, since I like to fiddle around What I did was : http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/tips.html#USERPROFILE

Probably some Full/Half duplex mismatch or a bad network-cable or switch-port.

He needs to install the Internet Explorer/Outlook Express version which comes with Windows Me on his Windows 98 box (Or a newer version) Then I think the following advise should work for him : http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/windows/tips.html#BACKUP_OE_MAIL

I used some BETA versions of the XP Powertoys and it didnt go very well. Only got the power calculator and the command line thing to work. Now the whole package has gotten a version detection scheme and will only install on a WinXP computer.
