10,000 rpm WD SATA-EIDE drives on the way! 5.2ms seektimes!
Christianb replied to SHS's topic in Hardware
My god I've spent years being ticked off at HD companies for not making an IDE 10K HD. However will this be a growing trend since the interface will be so much better, aka will we start seeing 12K and 15K drives? I doubt it! Frankly I think they'll keep the market divided with SCSI one place and SATA in another sure we'll have 10K RPM HDs but I think they'll keep the Hot Rod HDs expensive and on the SCSI Interface. -Christian -

Hi El Vago, (what does that mean by the way?) I still don't know what version of IE and OE(Outloook Express) you have? That may be your problem, you could just have a really old version of IE and a new version of Netscape. Have you tried Mozilla? I think it's better than netscape, isn't it? Maybe not, can someone comment on this whose tried recent versions of both? By the way I don't recommend using anything, but IE for web based hotmail, because MS is a bunch of bastards and in their typical anti-competive style don't allow file attachment uploads from anything, but IE. I think Netscape can and should sue MS over that. Thanks, Christian

Hi Alec, Thanks for posting your niece. It's fun to see cute and cheerful little ones. I have two little nieces myself. I didn't get to visit when Makayla was born, because I had a lice infection, but I'll have to fly down there (from Sacramento, CA to Irvine, CA) soon. Your Buddy, Christian -
Hi MarkTait, At the end of the week of weirdness did you happen to install an Instant Messenger Update? Instant Messenger as you probably already know uses the hotmail infrastructure for instant messaging. Also MSN Mess (yes I spelled that correctly has recently undergone many updates so that may be part of the problem. In any event I'm glad to hear things are working fine for you now. -Christian

Hi Curley_Boy, Windows NT 4 is a totally different OS than Windows 2000. Okay so Win2K is based on the NT platform, but they were working on Win2K for 5 years and as you might expect not much is the same. Whatever the reason I'm glad it's working for you. Yes Fat16 is a requirement however there is more than that to toy with in Windows 2000 or otherwise if you want sound and speed. Have Fun Playing Lemmings, Christian

Bets programing for recording steaming audio?
Christianb replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
Hi Jim and Mr. Guvernment, I just wanted to laugh, and say my solution is open source and multi-platform so there! No, seriously the program he has mentioned may be a better solution. I know what I described will work 100% of the time if your audio-out and audio-in features are set up correctly. The tool he mentioned will not. However in all fairness there is a downside to what I have recommended, I don't think that you'd be able to record surround sound using the method I've described, unless your card has surround -in (which I suppose would be at least two audio jacks) as well. Also my solution won't work if you have an S-PDif connector, however it may indeed work if you adjust my instructions for the newer interface. Adios Amigos, Christian -
Adios Amigo, Cristián En Íngles: Hi el_vago32, I am not a fluent speaker of Spanish so please excuse me if that didn't make any sense gramatically or logically. Here's what I thought I wrote: I think that your problem is something very funny to me. It's possible that your problem is related to the version of Windows you have. Windows 95B and earlier come with MS IE 3.02 or older and I think that Microsoft doesn't care whether or not these programs work with their web sites. Also I'm sure that MS IE 2.X can't open www.Microsoft.com! It's crazy, no? It's pretty funny too! So Long Buddy, Christian

Bets programing for recording steaming audio?
Christianb replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Software
Hi Mr. Guvernment, Generally speaking streaming audio is secure data. Meaning that you can only hear it once or at least that's what the software developers would like. The best way to get around this type of security is to hack the drivers. I am aware of absolutely 0 popular programs that speak directly to Audio hardware in Windows. Almost all of these program use Direct Sound, which then speaks to the drivers, that in turn output sound through your hardware. If you have a popular audio card like something ISA bus from creative labs I wouldn't be at all suprised if you were able to find a some people that wanted to write an open source wrapper to record secure audio. However all that aside there are far simpler ways of doing it. You could buy a Male-Male audio cable. Take the Line out and plug it into the line in. While listening to your favorite shows you could then use any good audio recorder (Audacity is the best freeware option, Cool Edit Pro is the best commerical choice) and record the music. If you want to be able to hear the music at the same time you're listening to it you'll need to buy a splitter which is very common. Have fun recording, Christian -
Hi Curley_Boy, I've gotten Lemmings II the tribes working in Windows 2000. However I don't seem to be able to do that today. I think my current troubles are related to a change in partition configuration. I am still trying to run it on a Fat16 partition though. If you want help with this I highly recommend writing the folks at alt.lemmings (newsgroup). Adios, Christian

Hi Lincster and Alec, I would imagine that you just need to install the Service Pack 5 runtimes on the system in question. Can you post a screenshot of the problem if that doesn't fix it? Also are you using only controls that come with VB or does your app integreate custom controls, because the problem may be related to the custom controls. I have written a number of VB 6 apps on 98 and NT, all of which run flawlessly on Win2K. In fact the VB development environment has never been as stable as it is on Win2K for me anyways. It may be that your application has some scaling code issues that are being manifested by an increase in your desktop resolution. Why don't you set your desktop to the same resolution, taskbar configuration, and color depth you had on NT and see if you app doesn't behave better. Good Luck, Christian

Can Win2K partitions be hidden with Drive Image 5.0?
Christianb replied to packman's topic in Software
Hi Gang, Ranish Partition Manager can do this, but I agree what do you need to hide it for anyways? Is this part of a half-baked multi-boot strategy. -Christian -
Problems schedualing Kazza with Task Schedualer
Christianb replied to Brian Frank's topic in Software
Hi Alec, As soon as I started reading the suggestion I knew it was you. I agree with everything you said right up until you recommended putting in the startup group. If you're going to share the computer with others you'd want to make your app as invisible and as fast as possible. I would add your application to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run so that others probably won't even know it's running. The other thing I'd recommend is that you either make your application invisible or a tray application. If you're using VB I would use a Sub_Main rather than a form and use the Windows API sleep command rather than a timer. I'd then do something like the following Code: Select Case Hour(Now) Case 6 to 11 Shell strKAZAA_PATH, vbMinimizedNoFocusEnd Select Alec my guess is he can't program. I'll make you this application for $10 bucks if you don't know how to program. Do you want it hidden or to be system tray application? You can pre-pay via PayPal to Christian_Blackburn@Hotmail.com. I will send you your application with an installer and an options dialog ($10 bucks for the options dialog) if you want to be able to change the dates and times. If you want some application samples you could try www.Checkerz.net www.KazaaControl.com (note this is for Kazaa 1.X not 2.X, although it may work with 2.X as well) www.IPNotify.com Good Luck, Christian -
Hi The Outrider, I don't know what OS you were having problems on, but you should really post all the steps you took in greater detail and submit it here so we have it in our database: Put the steps you had to take to make it work in the comments field THanks, Christian Blackburn

Hi Nebulus, Thanks for the Code. It would seem to me like I would have to learn some syntax to yet another proprietary language. Is GView/GhostScript WSYWIG? That's what I'm looking for is a freeware WSYWIG PDF creator. If there isn't one I'll just bag the whole thing. Being able to create searchable PDF files isn't that big of deal to me . Thanks for all the help, Christian

Hi HipShot that sounds like it would only be of issue to people running servers which you must be. I've never in my life made it that long without rebooting . Also do you know how to get the OS to reveal that? I know one of my utilities will tell me the uptime value, but can you get a it from a command prompt or something in Win2K? Thanks, Christian

Hi Gang, Personally I like the Adobe Acrobat Reader just fine aside from the "Are you sure you want to check for an update?" feature. I wish it'd just check and shut up already. Nebulus, I installed that MikTeX program and I don't see a working application after installing it. Sure there's a start menu group and it has some .exes in it, but they all seem to be configuration utilities, none of which appear to be a word processor. Here's what the start menu contains, I ran every last one of these: 01/12/2003 09:47p 478 DVI Viewer.lnk 01/12/2003 09:47p 474 MiKTeX Options.lnk 01/12/2003 09:47p 478 MiKTeX Package Manager.lnk 01/12/2003 09:47p 1,502 MiKTeX Update Wizard.lnk I ran Setup.exe v6.0.2800.1106 to install this program. Really I don't know what the distributor was thinking naming their downloadable binary setup.exe. That's just plain stupid. How many programs are named setup.exe? Oh I don't know a trillion! Come on it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a self-extracting installer should be named with the program title and the version number: IP Notify 0.23.exe for example. Thanks for any and all help Nebulus. Has anyone else tried both GSView vs MikTeX? It sounds to me like I installed the wrong app. Also can I just use GSView/Ghostscript to make PDF files, I'm happy with the Adobe viewer? Is GhostScript the editor and GSView the viewer as the names would imply? Can I install one and not the other? Thanks Guys, Christian

Hi Hacker, Yes you're absolutely right about the e-mail address spoofing. When I worked at Microsoft some of the guys, I never found out who ;(, wrote me an e-mail as if it was from BillG@Microsoft.com which by the way, somewhat follows their naming conventions. For example my name was Christian Blackburn and my e-mail alias was Chribl@Microsoft.com. Basically it simply needs to be major offense to send out spam. It is a major crime, because so many people's time is wasted in the process. Just my two cents, Christian -

Hi Alec, By the way it's a Checkers game and not chess. Sorry . I chose checkers, because this was my first major programming expedition and I knew the rules were simpler than chess. I like chess better too, but since I've had to play checkers so much while developing this I suppose in some ways I like it's simplicity better now . Chess is however a far superior brain exercise . Hey I came across a bunch of cool source code at www.SysInternals.com. You should definetly take a look at what they have available and consider incorporating some of that into your own programs. Some of the source is open in that manner and some is not so you would want to pay attention to their licensing requirements. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source.shtml They even have the source for a defragmenter and a scandisk program. Cheers Amigo, Christian -
