CD drive problem - reading created cds in explorer
Christianb replied to Nick601's topic in Hardware
Well I'm sorry to hear it's broken, but it's good that you've come to a conclusion the matter. With today's prices it just doesn't pay to go through a bunch of headaches over your burner. Just slap down 40+ and you can get something bigger, better, and badder . -Christian -
Hey DosFreak do you participate in the creation of Freedos at all? I play around with it every now and again, but really it's not that stable yet, and it seems to have poor compatiblity and timing. I'm not sure it's getting better either, it just seems to be changing. I wish they'd focus on a good core rather than a bunch of proprietary Semi-OS's like Seal. I mind that they're making seal I just don't care, because I simply want to run my old games, VB for dos, and 3d Studio, everything else is immaterial. If I want a good GUI I'll run Windows or Linux.

I tried most recent versions of VMWare and Virtual PC Trial editions about a month ago. While I liked that you could take screenshots with VMWare and I'm sure a few other things (have since forgotten) the dos emulation isn't very stable. Virtual PC has problems emulating EMM386 and isn't very good either, but I can run a ton more apps with VPC than VMWare, however if you really want your games to run DosFreak is absolutely right, there's no substitute for the real thing. :x I would also like to note that Virtual PCs trial is fabulous you can use it for about 45 days. The integration for emulated Windows OS's is superb. YOu can drag and drop files into your VPC windows 98 from windows 2000. I love it! I think VMWare might be better for emulating Linux. I can't get the sound to work in RedHat 7.3 with VPC, but maybe it works in 8.0, who knows? Good Luck, Christian

I got this from PMistry, who was nice enough to post this in our newsgroup about 2 weeks ago. Quote: the set blaster variables stand for the following: a=I/O address, usually the old Soundblaster 16 set it to 220. i=irq, default usually at 5 or 7. I would use 5. d=dma, which you already know, usually set to 1. h=high dma, this is used for 16-bit audio transfer, the d variable is for low dma or 8-bit transfers, usually set to 5 or 7. Again I would use 5. p=port, this is for the Wavetable MIDI port for General MIDI music, usually set to 330. t=type of Soundblaster card 1=SoundBlaster v1.0 (8-bit mono) or compatible 2=SoundBlaster v2.0 clone (8-bit stereo) or compatible 3=SoundBlaster Pro (8-bit stereo) or SB Pro compatible 4=SoundBlaster 16/AWE32 or SB16 compatible SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T4 This will do the trick most of the time.

I haven't heard anything to that effect, but in case you're right. Did you set the blaster variable? Set Blaster=A220 I5 D1 T4

What do you mean man? I just told you "I DON'T KNOW HOW!". -
Hi Clutch, No as far as I know it's part of the same program. You're just using the distant customer option. When I went and signed up after reading your post I saw links to go to one of their testing labs. So even if it's a slightly different program you do the same thing, evaluate a product, give feedback, and get a goodie in return . -Christian

There are two excellent Commerical programs that I'm aware of that will solve your problem: Mijenix SystemSuite or Norton SystemWorks. The Mijenix title is much better for undeleting. Norton's UnErase treats users like idiots and searches all their drives and then lists every file every deleted that's no longer in the recycle bin. The SystemSuite Version will let you specify which drives to search (much faster) and what filespec to display for example *.doc for word documents (much easier to locate your deleted file). You might try tucows.com for a freeware alternative, but really you can pick up a good copy of SystemSuite 3.0 for about 5-10 bucks so who cares if it costs a little. For that Try Ebay or Half.com. Good Luck, Christian

Most people don't even know about hover. It doesn't install with windows 95, but you can run it off the CD or copy it from the CD to your local hard drive. Which is what I've done and it runs great on Win2K. -Christian
-
I have to agree, however my game preference is a little different I think they should still Include Hover from windows 95, but make it multiplayer and have it use Direct3D. Wouldn't that be awesome? I'm not so crazy about the windows pinball game. I liked the old ones from Epic Megagames (now called Epic). The game was called Epic Pinball. -Christian

Hola Amigo, Hard drives are dirt cheap, maybe somebody will lend you one. If not you can always buy a newer or older one. Either would do the job. Just go to Half.com or Ebay and pick something up. -Christian -
There isn't one, you do work for MS and MS gives you something of monetary value that doesn't cost them hardly anything. This has been around for years. However it used to only be offered to Puget Sound, WA area residents. -Christian

Well I looked in here: "Start" --> "Programs" --> "Administrative Tools" --> "Local Security Policy" But I couldn't find such an option . Sorry guy. Maybe somebody who has an Admin background will help you. -Christian -
Okay, well at this time is there isn't a minesweaper containing OS. I'm not even sure server ships with games. -Christian

I couldn't agree more. I lost 2 zip disks and one drive that way, my dad lost about 11. -Christian

Ya I can see that currently they are currenlty offering online testing. In the past, as I just said, they wanted me to drive there and visit their evaluation labs. I used to live in Bothel, WA which is real close to bellevue and Redmond, WA (Home of Microsoft). -Christian

First off computer hardware has about a 25% DOA (Dead on Arrival) record so of course your new product could be defective. I consider 1/4 odds to be a sign of the kind of crap the computer industry is selling us these days you just can't get quality anymore from anyone. They are so cost conscious they save pennies by not testing their products before they ship them and let their customers go through that. Isn't that nice? The funny part is I don't think it saves them too much, because sooner or later their support staff will have to help these poor individuals. Which do you think would take more time, having an experienced professional test the drives, who knows exactly what they're supposed to do, or having a tech support person walk an inexperienced user though a trillion and one steps and multiple phone calls? And the guy with 6.4 and a 1 gig why don't you temporarily move all your data to the 6.4, install Win98 on the 6.4 and try burning. I can almost guarantee you that you will have the same problem. In case you haven't noticed, but the burner market is absolutely bloodthirsty. Those companies are getting products out so fast their engineers hardly know the names. These products are invariably ridden with defects. Oh well that's "show" business, Christian -

Actually what you need to create is a security measure whereby they are unable to end that particular task. I don't know how to do it, because I've never had to, but that's the deal. Another way to conceal your application is to name it the same as a normal windows process that typically has multiple instances running so it won't seem unusual or you could name it as something that sounds like a driver, like ATITask or something. -
OK I think you're confused .NET is a new development platform/ internet services archictecture and not an Operating System like Windows 2000 or XP. Sure you can run .NET on one of these, but .NET is not an OS. -Christian

Oh man I'm sorry that zip drive absolutely blows! What the hell was Iomega thinking when they released that?

And Kainz you have the most recent version of Nero too? Guys I had this problem twice with two different Plextor drives and both times it meant the drive was bad or had gone that way. Sometimes they read okay and don't write correctly or vice versa. It's often only on the outer tracks too, so a 450MB (that is the files are about that size while compressed on the CD) windows 2000 installation might never hit the problem. -
Hi Guys, I don't know if ALI got things worked out or not, but I did want to let both of you know about a program I wrote that checks whether or not you have P4 (it only does this once and then it just reads it from the registry), starts up the appropriate .exe, set's the priority to low, and clicks open dvd for ya. It slices, it dices, it's free. Anyways you both are welcome to give it a try: DVDx Launch. And no it's not a virus, but feel free to scan the hell out of it. -Christian[/url]

Hi Clutch, Thanks for the info. I tried to do one of their evaluations in the past, when I lived in the area and they wanted me to come drive all the way out to their location twice just to get a Spanish Tutorial. Naturally, I cancelled . At that rate I can afford to buy the program I wanted. I signed up for the developer testing, simply, because I'll be stuck using those tools so I might as well give them feedback on them. -Christian
