Ever heard of Win2K? You might install it and when you find you love it you can simply single boot a real OS . If you're worried about some of your applications not working you check for compatibility records right here at NT Compatible. WinME sucks and Microsoft knows it's a discontinued platform so don't expect a lot of product support on that one. By the way is this a secondary computer or something? Otherwise what are you doing at NT Compatible if you're using 9X only and don't have plans to move to a stable platform any time soon? -Christian

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but .NET is development platform and not a wallpaper bonanza . -Christian

Hide process from Process bar of the Taskmanager (W2K)

It does sound like you're trying to write a virus, or peeping-Tom type application. Basically you have to write a Win2K service and I don't think you can do that with VB. By the way if you're writing something harmful to others get a life. A 6 year-old girl can break an automobile, but it takes a mechanic to fix one. If you're writing that type of app basically I see you as a 6 year old girl having a temper tantrum. Remember just because you can doesn't mean you should. -
That is basically what I said there's a GUI, the MMC portion and dfrgntfs.exe and dfrgfat.exe which I thought were console apps. But I don't know how to tell. Whatever the case you can't run them externally. -Christian

Hi I'm a programmer so I don't specifically need to know that I can install SiSoft Sandra and it'll tell me everything. Although that is a good answer. I'm trying to find out where in the registry a user's CPU speed is maintained? Also where in the registry is the brand of the CPU manufacturer maintained? Basically I'm trying to tell if they have an intel P4 or not. Thanks, Christian Blackburn

How can you tell How Many MHZ a computer is from the regist
Christianb replied to Christianb's topic in Games
Thank you very much Admiral. I actually don't need the speed I'm just trying to detect whether or not the processor is Intel, and if it is then I need to know if it supports Pentium IV instructions. I'll have to find out about Windows 95. I have Virtual PC and therefore I ought to be able to install it and check. I would just ask someone, but I'd like a Windows 95 test bed for future use anyways . Thanks Again, Christian -
Quote: Well I guess that leaves me out since I don't have a web or FTP site! I guess so, but it's easy to get one. There's free hosts and or Readyhosting.com which I think is the best commerical host for the buck it's 100 dollars a year. CNEThas a great website that lists comparisons of hosts. Quote: Someone else has a thought that I haven't thought of even being a issue. It has to do with another image program commanding file associations away from the O/S. Nope that's not the problem, I'm sure it was an OS issue, because the preview pane isn't just for a particular file type it's for all sorts of files. The preview pane isn't related to file associations. I have .AVIs associated with DivX Player 2.0 Alpha, and the preview pane still previews in Windows Media Player Quote: The image program I use is IrFanView which I like because it is very small, loads fast, easy to use and it's far better than M$ PhotoEditor for JPEG's (very dated) and Media Player for MPEG's! I have both of these programs installed and I know that it not the problem. Quote: I also use ThumbsPlus for my main slide show, photo editor, but I have ALWAYS had this on my boxes. The IrFanView is somewhat new and I do have these file associations associated with this program (jpeg's and bmp's especially) BUT I have had this for sometime and this problem didn't happen right after I installed the program. I don't have ThumbsPlus, but I really think this is just an OS and User error that disabled things. Unless something got corrupted down the road, but that is a long shot. I guess I could try to re-change the file accociations back to M$.

There's dos and there's the Win32 console which isn't going away any time soon. OS functionality and their .NET take over the world scheme aren't that related. Almost all professional win32 apps support command-line function. Ever opened a document? That's command-line function not dos. When you double-click on a text file Windows probably launches %WinDir%\Notepad.exe C:\MYFile.txt. I'm sure defrag could still be .net or .whatever compliant and support "Defrag C:, D:" functionality. And by the way Defrag is a win32 console app as far as I know. There's just a gui that's displayed to users.

Hi are you sure it's not your refresh rate and or your monitor? I take it you removed both and the problem went away? I think you could get your Zip drive to work okay if you just don't use their drivers. Simply use the ones that come with the OS. If you have a Zip Parallel or Zip Plus you might still have troubles, but the SCSI versions are solid. I guess I dont' know if they have a true SCSI external ZIp or not. I know there's an internal. I don't really consider the Zip Plus to be SCSI since it doesn't comply to the specification. I mean what kind of SCSI device won't share with 14 other devices? What a joke, reason #457 why Iomega blows. If it's your NIC you're in luck. Nics are cheap, even name brand ones. It'll be easy to afford a replacement. -Christian

Quote: ok i have tried shutting down all of the exe that you dont think should be open, it seems to make the problem even worse for some reason! Wow really? That's interesting, sounds to me like whatever is the problem got more processor time and therefore occurred at shorter intervals. Quote: i did make a typing error on the IEXPLORE.EXE this exe is still in capitols though?? not sure if that matters Not really, because WIndows 2000 is case-insensitive. It's possible that if you renamed IEXPLORE.EXE to iexploRE.ExE some code might burp somewhere, but for the most part windows programs don't care. It's a programming issue really. If a program requests a file and it isn't found matching whatever case, then alternative file cases searched. However programatically if someone has a string value of If strProgram = "IEXPLORE" Then and you rename IEXPLORE.EXE to Iexplore.exe their code won't work. Kind of confusing really. Don't worry if you don't understand what I'm saying. It's just programmer mumbo jumbo . Quote: I think all of the drivers i have on here are windows certified While that definetly helps clearly it's no Panacea. Did you ever try a different video card like we all suggested? You could buy some cheap PCI S3 Virge or S3 Trio64 (slower) card ebay for about 3-7 dollars! If you want a good secondary card then you might also want to consider a Matrox, because they have the best drivers and support record in the business. They're still writing drivers and supporting 10 year old video cards! What a company. Too bad their hardware is no longer king of the hill. It used to be, a long time ago they came out with the first 128bit mainstream video card. Years later they also released the first DirectX supporting video card with bump mapping. However if you simply want to replace the ATI card with something comparable not a cheap test device that would be too slow to use long term then I strongly suggest you pick up a Nvidia Geforce 2 MX or whatever their latest budget model happens to be. I think NVidia came out with a chipset that has a TV tuner, if it were me I'd look into that. Quote: As i have said before i have had Windows Millenium running on this exact spec and the problem does not occur however on windows XP it does! Well then it could be the OS, but I highly doubt it, because Windows 2000 is far better product in every way aside from zip file support. (OK I'm sure there a few others, but let's not go into that). It could be the OS in the sense that your Video card manufacturer didn't write good drivers for Windows 2000 and did for WinMe. Why don't you take your PC to a tech savy friend's house and placing some of their parts in your system and seeing what happens. Did you already try removing everything shy of the video card hardware wise and see if your problem goes away? Also have you considered the possibility of a bad power supply and or motherboard. You may also just need to replace a fuse or flip your breaker in your house. Quote: Finally do you think it might be worth uninstalling one program at a time and seeing if that clears it up? Hell yes! Start with Norton SystemSucks. I swear there are only two good programs in that suite: NAV and Ghost everything else is only so so and typically does as much harm as good. Quote: or as a last resort do you think i should re install windows 2000? Why what a wonderful idea. I don't see why not. If you have a backup system you could try that first. Especially since I don't think you can unisntall DirectX and that may be the source of your problem. It may not be DirectX in the most literal sense ie: it's Micrsoft's fault. It may just be that your drivers don't work with directx 8.1 and that could be due to some design flaw. Quote: thanks again for your help on this i do appreciate it! Ya I've put in a lot of time into this, but you're welcome. Just take the advice and roll with it. Peace Out 8) , Christian

Does anybody know if this messageboard will run on Windows?

I noticed that it's PHP which can be used on windows. However it's possible that some linux only functions are called breaking compatiblity. Does anyone know for sure whether this will or won't run on windows? Thanks in Advance, Christian Blackburn -

That speaks worlds about Linux's system requirements and the relative simplicity of their hosting applications. By simplicity I mean fewer layers not missing functionality. The only thing I really hate about linux servers is the case sensitivity. Apache should really compensate for that whilst running on Linux. Does Apache 2.0 do that? I know almost no one is even using it yet, because everyone wants to wait for it to mature. Are there some usuability issues to? I think I remember reading that all the plugins don't work and or have to be rewritten. Thanks for the reply Admiral, Christian -
With RAM and the silly idiosynchrisies of different motherboards I've always just played it safe. I buy exactly the same chip from Micron every time, the only difference being that sometimes I'll buy say one 256 Meg stick, and one 512MB, but otherwise they're identical in every way. Micron makes pretty darn good RAM gold leads. Their RAM can be purchases at their RAM subcompany's website www.Crucial.com or from another vendor. The nice thing about crucial.com is you can select your motherboard and it'll only list RAM that works with it. That makes it pretty hard to screw things up, don't you think? Just a suggestion for future practice, Christian Blackburn

Quote: The first question is: How do you add a image to these posts? If I knew that I would of posted the image by now. Hi Bruce, To post pictures you need to do the following: 0. Start a photo editor, I'll use MS Paint, because everyone has it 1. Click "Image"--> "Attributes", and set the width and heighth to 1 x1 Pixels 2. Switch to the program you want to take a picture of. 3. Press PrintScreen (to take a picture of the whole screen) or AL+PrintScreen to just get the active window 4. Paste the image into your photo editor 5. Save it. 6. Upload it to your web or ftp site. 7. in the MessageForum view click the IMG button 8. Type in the URL after the Code: [IMG] tag (be sure to use %20 for any spaces in the URL) 9. Press Alt+P to close your IMG tag Quote: To answer your question, the whole left side is not there. The green and the red areas! The left edge of the window would be the edge of the folder icons. Okay so I've depicted what you're missing in blue: Quote: I always use detail view since I detest those childish, 3rd grade, silly, stupid, moran icons. Hmm...sometimes I really like that childish Macintosh-type view. It gives me a good spacial feel and helps me sense the file types. Other times if I want more details I've enable detail view. I have Details on in some folders and off in others. Quote: Besides that I really don't like them too much!..............Just a little humor Good we could all use a little more humor . I have personally had this problem before and resolved it, but I'm having a hell of time figuring out where to enable/disable it for you . Perhaps someone else knows? Best of Luck, Christian

For the record Folder.htt isn't always present. It's only located by default in your My Pictures folder, the Windows directory and I think program files too. I always just search and delete all of them except the one in the my pictures folder.

I just want to make sure I understand your question. Is what I've marked in Red missing and what I've marked in green still there?

Hey I just noticed I finally achieved Senior Member. Wooo Hooo! "I'd like to take a moment and thank all the little people I stepped on to get here , Oh I can't take it it's just too much, I'm so happy . No seriously, is that based on number of posts or duration of membership? Thanks, Christian 8) Senior Member ;( -

Wow that's a lot of RAM overhead. If I wasn't broke and didn't have only 256MB of RAM I'd replicate that part of my website (presuming I'll include it). This messageforum really is a slick program and is virtually bug free. Are you the webmaster of this site Admiral? -
I should also note that IMGICON slows down your system. There is an alternative if you have to have that special zip drive icon. You can overwrite the windows icon with the zip drive icon by up[censored] SHELL32.dll. However you would want to edit a copy in windows and then overwrite the original SHELL32.dll in dos. Note this will apply your icon to all your removable drives that aren't a CD-ROM or Floppy. So a Compactflash or SmartMedia reader might appear using this icon as well.

IEXPLOR.EXE (this is open cause im writing this post!)? Did you make a typo? Shouldn't it be Iexplore.exe? Otherwise you might have one of those bloody virusses . AppServices.exe -hmm what is this file for? Search for it and see who made it and what it does? Right click over the .exe file and choose properties. NAVAPW32.exe navapsvc.exe npssvc.exe NPRTOECT.EXE (Norton Anti virus) (i have tried disabling this) -Okay this I know the answer to for sure . 1. Press Windows + D 2. Right Click over the Recycle Bin 3. Click "Properties" 4. Click |Norton Protection| 5. Click [X] Enable Protection (Thereby disabling it) 6. Click [Empty Protected Files] (Remove the files you already tried to delete) 7. Click [OK] If you ever need to recover these files just run their undelete module and it'll scan your disk physically. However I like systemsuite 2000's undelete much better you can select which drive to search and include a filespec. Norton's app just treats you like an idiot and searches for every deleted file on all your drives (this can get messy folks). usrbridg.exe -what's this one for? Sounds like a PCI bridge, or some other Bus to Bus bridge. svchost.exe (running twice???) -that's okay. I'm not sure why that happens, but I believe that behavior is normal. It happens on my system too . ZipToA.exe -Ahh the dreaded Iomega drivers . IMGICON Could be part of the problem. ADService.exe -What is this crap, it looks like adware search and find out. devldr32.exe -This is seems to be hardware related what is it? NclConf.exe -What's this? ImgIcon.exe -Ahh the dreaded ImgIcon. I would try not running this at startup and see if that doesn't resolve some of your video issues. I had trouble with this application back on windows 95 and haven't used it voluntarily since. MPAPI3s.exe -What is this? It looks e-mail related, but it's not part of the OS or Office 2K ADUserMon.exe -yep this looks like more of that adware, maybe it's your problemo AcroTray.exe -Isn't this Adobe acrobat's reader. Man this is the kind of garbage Real Networks like to keep resident on everyone's computer. Look if you need acrobat double-click on a .pdf it'll come up just fine. If you browse to a web page it'll load just fine. All their cutesy app will do is eat CPU time and put an adobe logo in your system tray . Well I'm not sure if I resolved your video issues, but you were able to remove Nprotect so life ain't all bad . Send me a reply about the .exes I asked and maybe there's will be a clue to your problem.

I just looked at their home user faq and it wasn't listed you might try this larger version Expanded Faq or the Search the Knowledge base.

Frankly I'm not sure if you can rollback directX. You might look for a FAQ at Microsoft's DX page

What is the proper syntax? [/img] doesn't work and doesn't seem to either. Crazy. What am I doing wrong? Should I remove the %20s? Thanks in Advance, Christian Blackburn
