When you said one is 133 and the other is 100. I'd stop right there. You've found your problem. Most systems have trouble when all the ram doesn't go at the same speed.

Thanks Admiral for the registry key. I will have to research and see if it exists in Windows NT 4 and Windows 95 otherwise I'm afraid I can't use it or I will have to provide a contingency plan for the older OS's. Intel's website has this information, but their site is extremely hard to find information on. I think I will try to write them and have one of their employees find it for me . Thanks for your help guys, Christian -
Quote: Thank you very much for all the replies. I used the Divx program, but the sound didn't seem to be there on the final .avi file. I have had a lot of problems getting the audio to come out right, but the thing that's worked the best for me is usually choosing 48HZ NO conversion dolby surround. Another trick is to play the video in another program like PowerDVD and write down whatever the default values are and then apply them when you get back. Quote: don't have the actual dvd disk now but it somehow created the scenes in the temp. folder and i can play thoes at full resolution and sound (even AC3 works, it has a seperate file that i can play with Power DVD XP). It's better than nothing. in fact it is just like the dvd itself with .VOB after it!!!) Hmm I don't know what version you have or what you did I've never seen it leave gigs behind in the temp folder. You should delete that or try to process it again. Please make sure you're using the Latest Version of Lame for audio v3.92 , Divx 5.02, DirectX 8.0+, and DVDx 2.0 or higher. Quote: It's better than nothing. in fact it is just like the dvd itself with .VOB after it!!!) Actually that sucks that'll waste 4-8gigs whereas a compressed copy will come out to somewhere between 500-750MB which is much more fun, because then you can burn them to CDs and stop wasting valuable HD space. Quote: ;( I'm a rokie in this so i have no idea what is going on!!! Yes and unfortunately what you're trying to do takes a lot of time and practice. Quote: is there anyway that i could use the .VOB files and convert them to .MP2 or MPG ? Run DVDx and choose "File" ---> "Open Ifo" Quote: thanks again, i appreciate all your responds You're quite welcome. You'd be amazed how many people forget to say that .

I'm also trying to tell whether they have a Celeron or not. So that's why I'm checking both the manufacturer and the speed so that way I can support both geniune pentium 4s and any future celeron P4 class CPUs. What's the slowest P4 class celeron CPU? Or are celerons still based on the P3? It's been a while since I've kept up on CPUs. Thanks, Christian -
The machine I hand-me downed to my mom has a SB32 PNP in it and you can't disable the CD-Rom controller it comes with so it always eats IRQ 10. I wish they had included a jumper to disable that. I mean really, not everyone wants to run their CD-ROM using a slower interface . Although I suppose it would be good if you had too many hard drives (which come to think of it I do) Does anyone know what level of ATAPI it supports and wheter or not it supports DMA Transfers? I would just plug it in and find out (about the DMA transfers), but the card is in a different state and my mom definetly can't help me on this issue. It'd take me two weeks to get her to overcome her I can't do it attitude and try it out. For her opening a computer case is like NASA's rocket launching process.

I just want to say that Admiral LSD and PMistry both gave really good answers. Thanks for the top notch help guys. Admiral I love that you put in a multi-boot configuration. Pmistry I thought I knew that command pretty well, but what ever document you referenced from Soundblaster.com had much more. I knew my card was a T4, but I didn't know what all the previous values pertained to. I'm also glad you mentioned the Midi value I had neglected to include that. -Christian

Just look at this screenshot that's the real number you need to pay attention to. You're never just running the kernel there's always drivers, and probably your choice of applications. Also note in my screenshot that apps are running. I'm merely showing you where not depicting the ammount of my system at it's leanest and meanest. ScreenShot

Thanks IceMan for sticking up for me. Like my sister used to say when she was a kid "I'm right, I'm right, and I'll always be right!" . I agree that the Norton version is somewhat better. However I think both companies are missing the freaking point. First off it's a really good idea to run ScanDisk (now called CheckDisk) first. If you want to defrag there should only be three options: [ ] CheckDisk Thorough (otherwise it'll run the Quick CheckDisk) [ ] Process all drives? or Specify which C:, D:, etc... [ ] Power off when complete And these should also be available from a command line (so you could add them to task scheduler). Currently MS's defrag doesn't even support command-line function. What's up with that?

DVDx is free by the way. However the website that hosts it isn't. You can't view the pages, I don't know why he has his stuff hosted there when it's true blue freeware. Strangely everyone is allowed to use the program's messageboard. When you're using DVDx don't use the Zoom feature it'll only distort the characters and or objects in your movie. If you want to crop you video, download the adware supported version of Divx Pro or the 30 dollar commerical version and use the cropping tools in that program instead. If you download the adware version you can remove the CME_Sys.exe from your registry, but you'll need to keep this in there: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "Trickler"="\"c:\\program files\\divx\\divx pro codec\\gain_trickler_3202.exe\"" Don't worry the program doesn't run it's just a dummy registry value. It's the CME_Sys.exe string value you'll want to yank. Also NTSC films typically need to have following settings forced: Frame Rate: NTSC 29.97 [x] Detect 24HZ [x] Force 24HZ Happy Ripping, Christian Blackburn

That will make it easier for others to diagnose your problems. Just don't let anyone find out where you live that looks like a mighty nice PC . Just a suggestion, Christian Blackburn

I second that emotion DVDx is by far the easiest one I've ever used. Most of the programs out there only do a portion of the job. So you run one program to decrypt the files from the DVD. Another to convert to AVI format, and yet another to DivX. With DVDx you just install the DivX codec (from www.Divx.com) and then install Divx 2.0. When you click that link make sure you download v2.0, because it's the latest and greatest. I don't think the older versions are more stable they just support fewer drives and formats and do less.

Funny I just looked at my system and after closing every program aside from drivers and the OS my memory usage was 157MB! However that too can be misleading, because windows makes the most of what you've got. I'm using 157MB, because there's probably a ton of files in a system cache right now. I wouldn't be at all surprised in screen resolution and color depth came into play too.

Okay nevermind about the ram thing. It just wasn't clear in your posts. However I think it's next to impossible to know how much overhead the Windows 2000 kernel takes outside of Microsoft or some book. Every system has different hardware and since different drivers are always going to be running on a user's system it's quite possible that some users actually do have close to 128MBs take between their drivers and the OS. It's been my experience that the resource use is very close to 100MBs not 128, but once you start one or two apps file swapping will take it's toll. -Christian

CD drive problem - reading created cds in explorer
Christianb replied to Nick601's topic in Hardware
Hi Nick, It sounds to me like your drive isn't working for one reason or another. Cyclic redunancy error means that it keeps sending the same data over and over again. Now when you said that you have the most recent version of Easy CD creator did you mean that you have the most recent version of 4.X or 5.X? Because I don't know that 4.x is a very good solution for newer Burners. Which came bundled with your drive Roxio or Nero? Considering the way things are I would try to get the bundled software working first, because hopefully both companies took the time to make sure they work togetehr okay. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer for support? Tell me this if you take a CD in impecable condition that was comerically burned (like Windows 2000 if it's large enough) and be sure to get a data CD that is almost entirely full, copy all the files to a folder on your HD, do you get an error? If that fails try buying a lens cleaner CD and then burn some more. If that fails then take that CD you burned and put it in somebody else's system what happens? Best of Luck, Christian -
Why not use FileSearching.com and search for Eject.zip or something like that because there are utitlities that will eject, lock, and close your drive from either Dos or Win32 Console (that is some only work in windows). Good Luck, Christian

CD drive problem - reading created cds in explorer
Christianb replied to Nick601's topic in Hardware
I'm just wondering did you burn the CD in UDF format? If you did that and didn't have InCD running you wouldn't be able to view the data on the disc. However I think even in UDF format you should still see an installation program that once installed allows you to view the whole disc. Update Your Burner's Firmware, update your drivers, update your Nero suite, and update ASPI. You dont' have both Nero and Easy Cd-Creator installed. I understand that they can't co-exist without problems (sounds to me like they're a couple of kids who can't get along). You could also Remove and refresh the drive in device manager. You might make sure you're media isn't 12X and you're burning at 32, that wouldn't work. I suppose up[censored] your computer's bios wouldn't hurt matters any. You could make sure your CD-Drive is clean: no dust, no grease, and no grime. Some drives have problems if they aren't the Master of a given IDE channel. Make sure you have your drive jumpered as either master or slave and that any other devices on the same channel are jumpered as the opposite. If you have a HD you might have it jumpered as Single instead of master and that would cause problems. You could use a new IDE ribbon cable or plug the drive into a different channel. YOu could enable DMA in Device Manager. You could also re-install and then update all your burner drivers and software. Good Luck, Christian -
If you want to just given Norton the finger you can always go "Start" --> "Programs" --> "Accessories" --> "Sytem Tools" --> "Disk Defragmenter".

If they'd actually pay attention to their customers instead of assuming that they always know the answer and that they're stupid. They would have already figured out that there was an issue and fixed it. On the other hand maybe they want to leave it annnoying so people will upgrade to NS 2003. Either way I'm perturbed by the whole ordeal . I'm sorry you have also had problems with this too. -Christian ;(

I followed this issue right from the start. Because I have a backup system and I was excited that SP3 Came out. I installed it immediately. Ever since then I've had this problem. Don't worry about it. Microsoft hasn't made any changes to their file system since release. Symantec is simply covering their asses, should microsoft make a change in newer service pack or upgrade to a newer OS , just think of the reprocussions if 10,000 customers downloaded Sp3 and wiped out their systems. However that is not the case just OK and ignore it. The problem is symantec's website says "this happens all the time just run LiveUpdate and we'll remove the message" well their support staff has the right idea, but their developers are freaking stupid, lazy, and out of it, and forgot to release an update. So they're support people tell you, oh ya just run liveupdate, and you do, and the message is still there. What a bunch of jerks. And I told them this and they don't even read the e-mails and so they don't actually know that somethings wrong. They just skim the e-mails and keep telling everyone the same thing. Is that just a little annoying? or is just me? -Christian Blackburn

I'm not trying to offend you, but if you've never tried 128MB and then 256MB on the same Win2K Pro system you simply don't know what you're talking about. Since everyone seems to be in agreement except you why not consider the possibility that we are in fact correct. You could spend 20-40 bucks, or maybe even borrow a RAM stick from a friend just to try it out. Then you can write us all a thank you post, because we were right. -Christian Blackburn

Is there any way to rollback your directX version? When you said you'd tried a different video card did you try another ATI? Did you try a PCI video card to diagnose if it was an AGP functionality issue? The Graphics window size has gotta be the same thing as the AGP Aperture size. Go ahead and make sure that it's not taking up any more than ~1/4 of your total RAM. Has anyone considered that it could be an Anti-Virus program or some Adware running in the background eating up CPU time? Why don't you start windows and when everything has finished loading (wait until the hard drive quits chewing) press CTRL+ALT+DEL (3 Finger Salute), T for task manager, and click on the processes tab, write down the names of every .exe running and post it here. Also you might try to install Ad-Aware to remove any addware that could be eating your CPU for breakfast. Ad-Aware download.

Hi I would like to know how you can tell from Dos if a system just hibernated? I'm writing a utility that I'll run before Norton Ghost. I know there are windows Backup titles and many other options. However I actually like backing up in dos. Almost nothing can go wrong. No Virusses, No crashing, No files in use, No etc... Also you can delete Hiberfil.sys if the user didn't just hibernate. Of course you can delete it anyways, but that would definetly be annoying: getting error messages and loosing your application states, and possibly some unsaved files. So how about it do any of your MCPs, A+'s, or MCSEs know how to do it? Thanks a zillion, Christian Blackburn
