Win 2000 Pro And Half Life

Because CPU speed is relative and 0 is probably autodetect. Also a 400 megahertz PC isn't 400MHZ it's 396 so the math is definetly not accurate. Furthermore an AMD XYZ vs Intel QRS at the same MHZ is totally different so it wouldn't make sense to use that would it?

from Russia: help!!! drivers for Orchid Righteous 3d 2!

I'm sorry I'm speaking of Windows 2000 when I mentioned having to combine drivers. What operating system do you have? Windows 2000, XP, 98, Millenium, or something else?

from Russia: help!!! drivers for Orchid Righteous 3d 2!

Hi Palshturm, Just download them off of the defunct chipset maker's website 3dfx. Last I knew there were two driver packages one for GLide and one for DirectX you'll have to combine the two in order to get the card to work in both APIs, but perhaps you just need the GLide driver for glide specific games. Happy Gaming, Christian

    Iomega Ditto 2GB and XP

Sure thing Doug. I'm not sure if you're aware, but Iomega has one of the most deplorable hardware industry track records out there. They've had class action lawsuits put up against them 2 or 3 times. I know they promised tech support on their zip drive boxes and then charged everyone for support . 100,000+ zip drives had a mechanical flaw that would cause them to destroy the disk in the drive, and every disk thereafter. If you put that disk in a nondefective drive it would be damaged as well . I know my dad lost about 5/12 backup disks . I only lost one, but still it sucked. I also stepped on my parallel drive by accident one time. I did a service job and got home so late I just put the drive in it's carrying case on my floor and didn't see it and stepped on it in the morning . Naturally it broke, but oh well. I take it Iomega didn't have drivers? Did you try just running NTBACKUP.EXE from the command line and seeing if it was supported automatically?

    Iomega Ditto 2GB and XP

No offense intended, but why on earth would you want to run an old 2GB tape drive on Windows XP? Why not just buy a 100GB HD and use that for backup? No ugly noises, awesome performance, tons of space, no tapes to find, no drivers to mess with and best of all NO IOMEGA (the worst company in the computer hardware industry).

strange dos mouse behaviour in win2k

I have a friend who can decompile .exes and remove dialogs and what not. I wish I knew how to do likewise. I understand it can be rather time consuming though. So he isn't very eager to do it as a favor for me . Oh well perhaps I will just have to learn how to do it one of these days.

strange dos mouse behaviour in win2k

With your mouse you might try uninstalling any proprietary drivers and just use the ones that came with Win2K. Also you could move your USB mouse to PS/2, PS/2 to Serial, etc.. Hey I used to test Windows 98SE (4 months) and 2000 (only for 2 weeks). We had access to almost all the OS symbols, far more than the public will ever get, but they didnt' teach us how to debug. Developers would just connect remotely over our network and try to debug things. Sometimes the remote debugging wouldn't work and then they'd have to come watch it crash in first person. It was cool on Windows 98 everybody else would see blue screens, but with the symbols installed you could see what was running and which .exe and line of code trapped the system. ¡Qué tengas suerte! (Good Luck)

    Visual Basic Programming Site

if you want something really simple why not just create a page listing links from your site and have a hidden page to manage your links. For example: you could have a page display links and sort by categories, date created, and be able to add new categories on the management pages. It could be searchable too. Lots of luck. ASP is fun. You'll like it, Christian

    Visual Basic Programming Site

I thought the video and Cd library was a great idea. You could have data records on all the movies. You could have linked tables, linking your favorite actors to your films. You could also have pictures of each film. Your DB could track who you've loaned what video to. This could have accounts so that everyone could keep track of, and manage their video collection.

    win 2000 problem

Quote: The only think i would like to know about service pack 3 is : I have to downloaded it and run straight forward or does it needs anything else ? Yes, so long as you've restarted since then and didn't receive any error messages during installation, you should be fine. To check your Service Pack Level just press [Windows] + [Pause] and read the upper right of the page.

W2K Service pack conflict with RAID Card?

Thanks amigo I am aware of SCSI and it's design superiority and the fact that windows internally uses SCSI for it's data access and that IDE drives are mapped to the SCSI based data access. I was a hardware tester at Microsoft. I just value stability more than performance, I haven't always, but I think I've learned my lesson over the years. I don't mind that you like it. I don't think RAID sucks by any means, I'm simply stating that I have yet to see a good implimentation. The data shouldn't enter the OS directly from a RAID controller rather. The drives should be plugged into the raid expansion card and then there should be plugs to plug your emulated single drive into the motherboard's ide controller. I know might sound crazy, but who really cares about speed. Compatiblity is where it's at. Who cares how fast your PC is when you can't run anything? If someone would make the design I just described users wouldn't have to partition, format, re-install, re-configure, and re-load data files just to have raid. If my design was followed you could just copy from the single (non raid) drive to your array and the OS wouldn't be any wiser.

W2K Service pack conflict with RAID Card?

Hi yes your windows update problem can be disabled. Just go to windowsupdate.com and there should be a setting for it in there somewhere.

W2K Service pack conflict with RAID Card?

I'm almost certian that you installed windows 2000 with the promise controller and the array no? If you break the array your system won't boot either. Stupid microsoft did a pitiful job of supporting IDE controllers in 2000. If you want to change IDE controllers Win2K doesn't just detect the changes and let you live your life, no it will keep looking for the old controller and continually fail to boot. There's a KB article on this, I think it contains "after upgrading to a new motherboard [a new IDE controller as well] the system no longer boots". However you could just take my word for it or you can look for it at MSKB. I think your best option is to read Promise's website and if you can't find any SP3 info call them. By the way I had a promise raid controller and after having tons of stability problems, and being required to re-install windows (per the issue I just described), I tried to return what was in my eyes a defective product. Promise refused to refund my purchase (much to my personal dissatisfaction) so I sold the hunk of junk on eBay. I took a loss both in selling price and countless hours of wasted time. I think raid is a great idea. However I haven't seen one good implimentation yet. If the OS knows about the raid controller I'm already disinterested. Raid also violate KISS : Keep it Simple Stupid . win 2000 problem

Hi it sounds to me like you're having problems with the Windows Installer. Service Pack 3 comes with an updated are slightly less buggy version of the Windows Installer. Have you tried installing Service Pack 3 yet? Have you tried re-installing SP3?

    Visual Basic Programming Site

How about a website that tracks people's health habbits and their diseases? It could statistically graph what habbits create what actions create which outcomes. You could even get donations and or be a charitable organization. The most important thing would be to find a reasonable means for making sure people aren't making up names and phone numbers. However come to think of it that's not really an issue either, because if you have data on 100,000 people. You could just call 100 or 500 of them and if 10 percent were fake then you could presume that your data was 90% accurate at best and you'd throw out the highest and lowest 5 percent for each graph. Well anyways let me know what you think?

    Visual Basic Programming Site

No offense, but there's already tons of sights that do what you describe for Visual Basic. If you want to make a website why not fill niche? If you want to contribute code why not write a tutorial? PlanetSourceCode already has tons and tons of source code for you guesed it, tons and tons of languages. If you want tutorials just ask jeeves and I'm sure he can list 10 or more good VB tutorials. All the same good luck with whatever you make and whatever you decide to do, Christian Blackburn

strange dos mouse behaviour in win2k

I was just curious if this was occuring about you toggled out of your game. Perhaps you should mono-task and just stay in your game until your done if that's happens to be what's causing your problems. Good Luck, Christian Blackburn ;(
  19. Hi Gang, Thanks as always for all wonderful help and feedback. This program is set in the registry on my Windows 2000 machine to run automatically and I'm wondering what does it do? I think it's for network environments. I presume that if you had a roaming user that this would synchronize their account data or something? Thanks, Christian Blackburn (I'm sorry I wasn't thinking and misfiled this post, it won't let me delete it either . So I guess we'll just have to use it here anyways

    What CD-RW do u recommend?

I'm not going to endorse anybody's anything, but I just wanted to say that best buy has a hell of a deal going on: Best Buy has got the Digital Research 40/12/48X CD-RW drive for only $29.99 with free shipping after a $30 Mfr. rebate. Click here for the techdeal and search for 'Digital Research'. OK one quickie, Plextor Drives are pretty shweet they come with a bit by bit cd copier that can't be tricked by funny file systems.

    DOS applications questions

Yay DosFreek. Hey Dosfreek, how do I set up DHCP in MS-Dos 6.22? I know I need my Nics drivers, but what MS networking files would I need as well? Thanks in advance. I'm trying to get Arachne web browsing and network file sharing enabled.

The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread

I absolutely cannot believe how cheep 15,000 RPM drives have gotten. I take it there is a faster spindle speed out now? You can pick up a 10gig 15K drive for about 125 bucks! That's just crazy, crazy cool (for all you Paula Abdul fans out there, not that the song didn't suck, but she did have good ones, like cold-hearted snake) .
  24. Hey I'm trying to determine whether I was just lucky or if Win2K SP3 has improved the stability and compatibility of other users as well. What do you think of Sp3? Haven't installed it yet? Give it a try http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/sp3lang.asp Thanks for you feedback, Christian Blackburn
  25. Quote: Yes, a pain, but I get to do things differently too, things I know & learned over time on the last installation that I knew I could have done better.) I used to feel exactly the same way, but as I have gotten older I've realized that I don't enjoy installing Os's, applications, and drivers all day. The number one thing I loose on a re-install is time. I can think of so many things I'd rather be doing it scares me . So that's why I use Norton Ghost, but there's a ton of great backup titles. I also hate going through every program and digging my way through thousands of settings dialogues to get things just the way I want them. So I back it up. And yes if things get really screwed up (after worm virusses for example) then yes I re-install too. Does anyone know of any freeware backup titles worth a damn? I have RawRead/RawWrite which is an internal microsoft tool (not to be mistaken with the freeware floppy tool). However rawread only supports Fat12,16, and 32 and doesn't support resizing. So if you have a backup and your HD dies and you try to restore it to a larger drive you're hosed . Lame no?
