    Web page design software

Hi Defledermaus, You'll want to take a look at Macromedia Dreamweaver it is recognized industry-wide as the #1 web dev tool. Yes it's easy to use. Silver-Dagger is correct to a certain extent you will find it beneficial to know the interworkings of web languages. However at the same time that was spoken like true Linux user. Allow me to paraphrase what he said "It's easier when you know everything, so why not try to learn just that?". Cheers, Christian
  2. Hi Norm, I'm glad things are working. Duhmez what you were describing about threads is incorrect. A process means another .exe, a thread means another stream of processing within an .exe. If you have the "start new instances of explorer in a separate process" option disabled then you'd be correct. Now that Norm's issue has been fixed he too could observe multiple threads. Cheers, Christian
  3. Hi Gang, I used to be able to preview all my icons in Windows Explorer. However now all I see is the associated application's icon for the .ico extension as the image for each icon in explorer. Here are my registry settings: Quote: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile] @="Icon" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\DefaultIcon] @="%1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell] @="Open.VisualStudio.7.1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\open] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\open\command] @="C:\\Program Files\\Microangelo\\studio.exe %1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\Open.VisualStudio.7.1] @="Open with Visual Studio .NET 2003" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\Open.VisualStudio.7.1\command] @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\\Common7\\IDE\\devenv.exe\" /dde" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\Open.VisualStudio.7.1\ddeexec] @="Open(\"%1\")" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\Open.VisualStudio.7.1\ddeexec\application] @="VisualStudio.7.1" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\shell\Open.VisualStudio.7.1\ddeexec\topic] @="system" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico] @="icofile" "Content Type"="image/x-icon" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico\OpenWithList] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico\OpenWithList\devenv.exe] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico\PersistentHandler] @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}" . What I don't understand is why if the following registry key is there Quote: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\icofile\DefaultIcon] @="%1" doesn't the icon's image appear any longer in my explorer views? %1 clearly refers to the icon itself. Here's what I'm now seeing inside of Explorer: Thanks in Advance for any and all help regarding this matter, Christian Blackburn
  4. Hi Sapiens74, You da man! Not only did I already have TweakUI Installed, but your suggestion worked great. PS: MicroAngelo has an option to install some program that'll animate your icons and what not, but I have always skipped that. There's nothing worse than animated icons when you're into performance and stability . Thanks for the help, Christian Blackburn
  5. Hi Norm, This will most likely fix your multiple explorer's running problem. 1. Double-Click on "My Computer" 2. Click "Tools" -- "Folder Options" 3. Click the | View | tab 4. Un-check [ ] Launch Folder Windows in a separate process 5. Click [OK] Cheers, Christian
  6. Hi Gang, I'm not sure how it happened or I myself did in fact do it, but it would seem that the toolbar folder that's part of my bookmarks parent directory has been deleted. Can somebody tell me the name of the folder so I can re-create it? Right now when I try to drag and drop files onto the normal location of the toolbar to the right of [Home][bookMarks] nothing happens. If this fixes the problem which I assume it will I will write a bug against Mozilla 1.4 regarding this. Since that folder should never be able to be deleted through the UI. And if it's deleted externally it should be re-created at startup. Thanks for your help, Christian Blackburn

How to set floppy for application specific temp files?

Quote: What would be the pros and cons of making the financial application's temp folder (wherever it was) an encrypted folder? What kind of 2nd rate program is this that you would need to encrypt the data in your temp folder to preserve your privacy? Encryption is yet another no-no for your temp directory. A temp directory is supposed to fast, not secure. Why don't you just secure the computer it's on and call it good. If a user has access to your temp dir then they already have more than enough access to steal your data. Quote: And how is the encryption done, by some connection to username and password? Presumably so. However, if we all knew a lot of the details about the encryption then it wouldn't be any good now would it? Cheers, Christian

    Murdered BIOS!

If the idiot hadn't unplugged the thing while it was up[censored] then I'd say it was entirely Intel's fault. The user should at least have to pay shipping in both directions for their own stupidity . However any flash program that isn't hardware specific is a highly-flawed dysfunctional program in my opinion. It should be humanly impossible to flash the wrong hardware and any vendor who doesn't make that a reality is doing a major disservice to their customers. Cheers, Christian

How to set floppy for application specific temp files?

Just yesterday I emptied my personal (user-assigned) temp directory and it had 118MB of data! Can your floppy do that? Even the 2.88MB variety? I highly doubt it. So let's skip the TEMP dir assignment idea entirely. Not only that, but there would be a significant performance degradation related to using the floppy drive for such a task. TEMP dir activity could be about 1/100 to 1/1000 the speed! Cheers, Christian

How to set floppy for application specific temp files?

Hola ConQueso, Floppies are a horrible storage media for a variety of reasons: A. Speed B. Reliability C. Capacity The significance of A-C depends on the application, but for the most part floppies won't work. On a financial application it might, because hopefully you won't have more than 1.44 MB of data to store. However, setting your temp directory to A:\ has got to be the worst idea ever. Furthermore TEMP data isn't what you're looking for. Temp data is just that meaningless temporary sludge. Once you restart your application it will most likely have entirely forgotten about the previous session's TEMP data. If there is a document file or data folder that stores your information I'd take a look at the size and the possibility of relocating that either at run-time or before and after to your floppy or a larger and more reliable storage point like CD-RW. Cheers, Christian

    PC ToolWorks DataRobot

My Response: Quote: Hi Troy, That is simply wonderful and from my perspectvie almost unbelievable news. My main experience in the past was PowerQuest's Lost and Found which only will do one restore process on one machine for one failed drive and that's a whopping 70 dollars! I have however been disapointed by the how difficult it is to aquire a patches for these products. Where would one do that? I've already tried: http://www.pctoolworks.com/, http://www.cdmicro.com/, www.Hauri.net, http://www.pctools.com/, http://upgrade.pctoolworks.com/data. Trust me when I say that the legitimacy of the CD fabbing department's accident can't help, but be questioned when none of these websites readily link to updates for any of the titles this suite. These two URLs should absolutely contain a copy of the patch: What comes up when you click on the trial message: http://www.pctools.com/ -This URL The URL displayed on the dialog of the trial message: http://upgrade.pctoolworks.com/data Thanks again for the help Troy, Christian Blackburn

Hi Adam, Thanks for the letting me know. I have to admit I've never even tried a copy of PhotoShop outside of Kinkos and you know I'm not going to just sit there and learn it at their prices. Cheers, Christian

    Poll: Operating Systems

Hi Adam, Thanks for the tip I'll keep that in mind if I play with it some more. All I have is the 120 Day trial. Even though I could probably get it at an extreme discount I really don't like playing with Operating Systems until they're more mature. I'll let somebody else play around with intermittent data loss . Cheers, Christian

Hi Dharmesh, By default Windows 2003 has Win2K's UI, but I think there's a way to install the Windows XP UIs. Cheers, Christian

As long as everyone is plugging their favorite graphics app I might as well plug somebody else's . Maybe GIMPWin can do it too? It's worth reading their specs to find out. Cheers, Christian

I agree 2003 costs too much, but fortunately I used to work at Microsoft and have friends that still work there. Cheers, Christian

    Poll: Operating Systems

Hi Mr. Guverment, Actually I don't think you can get Windows XP to run as fast as Windows 2003 I turned of all the features in XP when I was using it and it never got as fast as 2003. I wish they'd make a workstation version of 2003 though. Cheers, Christian

    Poll: Operating Systems

Hi Gang, I would like to vote for Windows 2003 server even though I no longer have it installed (120 Day Trial). I've never used anything faster or more stable. It features just the basics and once you turn of the security features and enable sound the OS is absolutely bitching. Cheers, Christian

    creating GIF files

Hi Vulcan, I'm sure there are freeware options out there for this task. Try searching on www.Tucows.com for "Gif Animator" or manually browsing their Graphic Utilities section. Cheers, Christian
  22. Hi Gang, Has anyone else noticed that Win2K Sp4 isn't up[censored] the ammount of disk space free immediately or sometimes at all? I'll permanently delete (skipping the recycle bin entirely) a 700Meg file and it'll still read 135MB free. This is on a 45 GB partition! I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this? I ran chkdsk with free disk space checking on all the drives and it's still doing that:(. Adios Amigos, Christian

Windows 2000 SP4: Fat 32 Disk Space Free Delays

Hi Guys, Thanks for the feedback. New Umbrella, I deleted the file permanently it neither exists in the current folder nor in the recycle bin. It's gone and still the free disk space was not updated. CyberGenX, While it is a problem that I only have 135MB free, the problem is that after I delete a 700MB file that value go 135MB to 835MB free immediately. Thanks Again Guys, Christian

Terminator 3: "The Rise of the Machines"

Hi Gang, Any actor that can play a roll like Edward Scissorhands is someone to admire. The movie wasn't all that special, but he did make a convincing & altogether weird character. I think I slept through most of What's eating Gilbert's Grape though . However, from what I understand I didn't miss much. Cheers, Christian
