Ok, so about 2 days ago, when I got back from school a terrible thing happened to my computer. Now the monitor was in power save mode like it should be, but the tower only showed that the computer was running but theres no loading. I moved the mouse so that it should get out of power save but it didn't. Then I realized that the keyboard NUM Lock doesn't even work anymore, so it had to be a big crash. I tried to press the reset button but nothing happened. I turned off the power bar it is connected to and tried to boot it back up but it didn't. All it did was come on and off right away. After unplugging things and adjusting things, the computer booted back up finally. The computer looked fine, everything was running smoothly and I did a Norton System check and everything was fine. Now the next morning the same result happened again. With the keyboard the responding and all. It looked like it was in hibernation mode but I checked that before and it was off. This time I just shut the computer off until I came back from school. Only this time the computer didn't boot up at all. When I turned it on, the red loading light was just glowing there and something inside the computer was making a weird noise. It was like a CD getting scratched slightly. After waiting a few second the green light comes on but that's it. No monitor responce, no keyboard responce, nothing. I am now stuck. My only ideas are that a virus got in, a hacker got in, or my hard drive has somehow become corrupted. Might any of you have suggestions?

I got a Linksys Auto Sensing Switch with 5 ports. What I have connected is the ADSL Modem, one desktop, one laptop and one Xbox. From modem to switch is a crossover cable while switch to desktop, laptop, and Xbox are all normal patch cables. I have two IP's so the desktop and laptop gets to go online. I believe that they are the different IP's because the subnets are different. The interent is working but I'm not able to set up a network between the laptop and desktop. I created a share for both hard drives, and I used the Set Up Network Wizard that's part of Windows XP Pro on both computers. But the desktop has SP1 while the laptop doesn't. I also have Zone Alarm but I added both computer IP's as a trusted zone. So the laptop's Zone Alarm has the desktop's IP in the trusted zone. But this hasn't done anything. The desktop and laptop cannot see each other. Can anyone help me out? I've been reading that since the subnets are different I can't network. But is there way around that? Also I was able to network the two computers by just connecting a crossover cable, but since now I have a switch I would like to network through the switch. Thanks

My speakers were plugged into the back of my computer where the sound card is. The sound card is integrated and I thnk it's somewhat busted. First, the sound only comes from one speaker while the other has sound but it's very quiet. All my plugs are plugged in tightly and everything looks fine including my volume control settings. Then I plug it in the front of my computer because there is a earphone port. When I do this, the sound it back to normal. Both speakers have sound at full blast again. Could it be my sound card or anything? Tell me if I need to post any specs as well. Thanks

Yes, both of my subnets are different. Machine one is 255.255.248.0, while machine two is 255.255.240.0. How to I make it so that both are on the same subnet?

I have two seperate IP's on both computers. I was provided two different IP's by my ISP and both computers are connected to a switch. My directories are shared and our workgroup name is both OFFICE. Would it work if I disconnect the high speed, leave only the computers connected to the switch, turn off the firewall, restart both computers and try the Set Up Network Wizard again?

Well actually, I think I need to be more specific. I got a Linksys Switch and I got a laptop and a desktop computer running XP connected to the switch. I have Zone Alarm Pro 4.5.538 or something. Now I already added the laptop's IP and put it in the trusted zone. I turned off the XP firewall and the ZoneAlarm's sharing firewall. I ran the Network Wizard but that didn't work. I set up the option where it gives the option "This computer is connected to a hub and the other computers are connected to the hub as well." I do the samething on both computers but that we still can't see each other. Also the hard drives are share enabled. Any help? Thanks people

Hey, looks like it was the power supplier. My mom brought it back to the store and it ends up that the power supplier fried. At least they replaced it for free since we still got warranty. Off-Topic Got a question first. I got a switch that is dividing my two IP's for my high speed. Now I can't figure out how to network my two computers to share files. I know to use the Network Wizard but it hasn't worked. Can you help me out here?

Yea, it most likely is my hard drive, but when I'm hearing the sic sic sic sound, it sounds like it is coming from the power supply part. I opened the tower up just to see if there is any visible damage but I couldn't see any. When I turned it on, the sound seemed to be coming somewhere near the processor and the power supplier. Maybe it's my ears but I really don't think so.

It's not a tic tic tic but a more of a sic sic sic.

I recently uninstalled Counter-Strike because of some errors I was having with it along with Steam. But now when I put my CS retail cd in, when I click install the CD just starts spinning with the fan. This doesn't stop though, it just keeps spinning and spinning with no installation progress happening. Can someone tell me what's wrong? Thanks
-
The CD has no scratches at all. I've kept it in great condition. Also the CD does run on other computers and I do not have another CD drive to try it on, on the computer I want to install it on.

No other CD behaves this way. I can play audio CD's and I can burn CD's as well. This is the only CD I believe that does this.

I'm finally getting ADSL and I'm not sure what to get to split the internet between 2 computers and a Xbox and to also have a small home network. The Hub is only suppose to split 2 IP's, a router splits one IP for different computers to use it but what's a switch? And could someone clearly explain better how is a Hub, router and switch all different?
-
Well the thing is that my ISP gives us two IP addresses as a minimum. So we can't give back one of our IP's. Also I don't want to spend lots of money on a router or gateway. That is why I am leaning towarads a hub or switch. So can a switch provide internet for 3 devices?
-
One more question, can a switch give the internet to all three systems even though I have only two IP's? Also, at the moment my ADSL modem is connected directly into my computer and the cable is a ethernet crossover cable. When I connect the modem to a hub, switch, or router does it still have to be a crossover cable? Also from the hub, switch, or router can they all be normal cables to connect to 2 other computers or do they have to be two other crossover cables? Thanks

Well, I'm a fan and obviously I will probably get it. Now the big question I have is really my video card. I have a S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR 32MB. Now from what I've read, this is a kinda crappy and I just want to know if it will run. As the for the rest of the computer: AMD XP2000+ Windows XP 30GB HD 256MB RAM CD-RW 56x24x56x Integrated Sound card 56k Modem Now the Official System Requirments for Halo PC: Microsoft® Windows® 98SE/Me/XP/2000 PC with 733 MHz equivalent or higher processor 128 MB of system RAM 1.2 GB available hard disk space 8x speed or faster CD-ROM drive 32 MB T&L capable video card required Sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device 56.6 Kbps or better modem or LAN for online play; broadband to run a server Lastly, what does T&L stand for? Thanks

My friend gave me a his old GeForce2 MX and we tried to install it. We plugged it in the AGP slot and plugged the monitor cable in but there was no picture appearing. So we thought to disable the integrated card in the BIOS and change it to AGP. But that didn't work either. So we tried to unplug an older AGP video card from an old computer and this one was an ATI but it was really old like 8MB of memory. Anyways, we plugged it in and it worked. So we tried the GeForce again but there was nothing. At this point we didn't know what to do so he went home. My friend tried it on his dad's computer and it worked, so it can't be the GeForce then. So any ideas on why this could have happened? My motherboard is a Matsonic MS8157E.

Alright, but if I do get one my old video card is integrated on to the motherboard. Now how would I replace it? Are video cards PCI adapted or how would I install one?

I just got a Labtec Webcam and it doesn't work. The instructions tell me to install the software first and during this process, the driver seems to install as well. It rebooted and told me to plug in the camera. When I did, the software has this like test page but there was no picture. There was this "Fix It" option that suppose to stop conflict with the USB ports. I did that and still nothing. I uninstalled the driver and software and installed the camera manually. Well, that didn't work either and for some reason it messed up my TCP/IP protocol but I fixed that with a Windows Registry repair. Anyways, now I'm back here and I found this sheet that told me to go to http://www.logitech.com/xp/updates/ for the latest software. I didn't find any driver for my camera or any software. Next I went to www.labtec.com, they had drivers but I believe it's the same version as the drivers on the CD provided so I haven't installed it yet. Does anyone have the same Web Camera and successfully installed it? Or have any idea on how to install it? Thanks for your help.

I believe my sound card is VIA AC'97 Audio. The sound card is integrated into the motherboard so I don't think it's very good.

I'm getting a new computer and I want to connect it with a laptop. They both have a NIC and I know I will be needing a hub. Do I need look for anything specific in a hub? Also are there any software needed to install? Thanks.

I was actually thinking of getting a crossover cable instead for my network since it's only 2 computers. Can the crossover cables connect a desktop and laptop computer? Both computers are running Windows XP and what configurations will I have to do in order for the 2 computers to share their hard drive space and also play LAN games with each other? Thanks
-
So, really any hub or router will do and all the networking should automatically detect right? I'm mainly doing this just to play some LAN games and sharing some hard drive space between the computers. I also am doing this wired since I don't have the wireless network cards.

I plan to, or more like my parents, are getting a computer. They just want to get one for about a year and replace and don't ask me why. Anyways, they found one they like that they think is not too expensive. AMD 1800+ CPU PCChips 8310 Motherboard 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM Integrated Video Card (Assuming only a 16-32MB video card) Maxtor 30GB 7200 Hard drive LG 52X24X52 CDRW 1.44 Panasonic floppy drive 17" 300W ATX Case Integrated Sound card PS/2 keyboard PS/2 wheel mouse Integrated 10/100 Network Card 240W Speakers Front Audio & USB2.0 Included Also, I think they install XP for free when I give them the CD for it and for the modem, they said they would take out the modem from our old computer and stick it in the new one free of charge again. Oh yea, and the cost for the computer PLUS tax already is: $387. So I'm just wondering what you people think. My parents are probably going to get it anyways, so just want some opinions. Thanks
-
Ok, so from what I've read, PCChip mobo are bad. May I ask why they are bad exactly? But besides the mobo, the deal is pretty ok I would assume right? Also, the 387 dollars is Canadian money because I didn't mention that in my last post. Thanks again
