    Workgroup Vs Domain

Hi all 3 computers on my LAN all runningXP pro, they are networked as a workgroup, can I set them up as a domain? and what would be the advantages/ disadvantage of doing this?.
  2. Hi all I have XP Pro set up for 4 users myself as admin the rest limited accounts all are password protected. I find that when I install a program in my account it is available to all other users, is there any way I can install programs so that they can only be used by the users who request them? also all folders except the My Documents folders on individual accounts can be accessed by everyone how can I restrict access to these folders to prevent people tampering with the contents?. Thanks in advance ..... Elux

    Limited Users

Thanks adamvjackson I will try what you suggested, I have also noticed that the recycle bin contents are also available to every user, I know I can set it up not to store deleted files but the number of times I have needed to recover a deleted file rules this option out Thanks Again .... Pete

    Better Cooling

You have a cooling fan that should eaisly handle the cooling on this processor, you have applied the thermal compound, the other factor that no one has mentioned is the stability of the voltages, they will generate excessive heat if outside the prescribed limits. Elux

    Dual Boot

Hi Guys Thanks for your help, I was'nt happy that XP did not see the dos o/s on the c: drive, so I decided to re-format the 2 partitions and reload dos on Part1 and XP on part2 this time XP picked up the dos o/s and created a dual boot system, as you said it only need the additional lines adding to the boot.ini new boot ini :- [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:\ = "MS-DOS" Thanks again for info

    Adsl Modem Router

Hi Guys Recently dumped the usb broadband modem and fitted a modem router, have 3 PCs using Win XP networked on it, all 3 connect to the net no probs, all 3 work ok on the LAN until I enable the XP firewall then I can still see all connections to the LAN but am denied access to them, I thought the Firewalling was to protect against intrusion from the net not from the computers on the LAN?. Am I missing something obvious. Thanks

    File Checker

Yep ... Problem solved To disable check for dirty bit on the e: drive Either use regedit to edit KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager Change BootExecute Entry to autocheck autochk /k:e * or run chkntfs /x e: this disables chkdsk from running on drive e: run chkntfs /e: restores checking on the selected drive in this case e: Thanks AlecStaar for pointing me in the right direction More info here http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q160/9/63.asp

    Closing Program Dialogue Box

Hi All ATI All in wonder 128 pro, XP generic drivers worked ok but I wanted to use all the features of this card, so I downloaded the XP drivers from the ATI site, after installing the display driver and accepting a restart a message box popped up stating "Closing Program" "Should not see this". I am getting this message quite a lot now has anyone else had this happen or know why it is happening??? Thanks Elux

    Closing Program Dialogue Box

Hi I haven't yet gone back to the previous driver but have set a restore point just in case. I only seem to see it if I install new software and elect to let the installation program close down and restart the computer ... very strange, I like yourself have cleaned and re-installed XP about 5-6 times for various reasons and have encountered this message on previous installations but can't for the life of me remember if it was display driver related. Thanks ... Elux

    Startup problems

Tried as suggested, changed all the manual services that were still running to automatic but still the same, for some reason the network card is causing the services to take longer to start, also checked to see if any extra services were running when the network card is enabled but exactly the same services are running when enabled and disabled. I have also noticed that if I disable the network card in device manager then reboot all is ok then if I enable the network card everything runs as normal.... weird thanks for the suggestions, will keep plugging away at it.

    Startup problems

Hi Paul I have been having exactly the same problem as you, so I went into device nanager and disabled all the devices that I did not need running, eg. cd writer, Dvd, floppy, second HD, scanner, unused coms ports, network card. Rebooted and the problem had gone, then I started enabling the devices 1 by 1 and rebooting until the problem re-appeared. I my case it is the network card that is causing the problem just why I don,t know but its half the battle finding the problem device, now I hope someone out there with more knowledge than me on networking will be able to point me in the right direction. By doing the same ypu should be able to find what is causing your problem although I note that you don't have a network card on your system. Good Luck ..... Elux
