    Performance on system?

Quote: How will Windows XP Home edition run on this machine: AMD K6-2 475 MHz 384MB PC100 RAM ? And if it is slow, how can I make it faster? (without upgrading the whole system). I plan to turn of Luna and just use the standard classic Windows look. Anything else I can turn off? System Restore maybe. I have a K6-2 400 box with 256MB PC100 and it runs XP just fine. I put a GeForce 2 MX in it and it usually only drops below 40fps in UT on really big maps. Turn of system restore, and use some tweaks you can find on this site. APK had a really good guide around here somewhere for disabling unneeded services in Windows 2000 that translates really well to XP, and will help a lot. If decide to go for it (if you haven't already), check the compatibility lists on this site, and download all the drivers you're going to need ahead of time. Some of XP's built in drivers work really well, but others but others don't quite cut it. And if your motherboard is fairly old, you might consider flashing to the newest BIOS just to be safe.

    TV Tuner CARD

I'd have to say Hauppauge WinTV as well. I've had an STB TV (3dfx VoodooTV), an ATI TV Wonder VE, and now a WinTV Go. The Hauppauge is definitely the most compatible with NT 5.x, and has a better picture. Just make sure you stay away from ATI. That was the worst product I've ever owned. I'm not sure what ATI is thinking with the whole "drivers by mail" thing.
  3. Quote: Get rid of MSN messenger and install Trillian...the new version ROCKS! www.trillian.cc My thoughts exactly. I use MS Messenger for a couple of people who refuse to use anything else, but theres nothing I hate more than programs that I have no control over and try to integrate in to everything I do. Most of the people I know who wouldn't use Trillian before have finally switched, especially now that it does file transfers.

XP-What do you think of it now?

The main reason I went to XP in the first place was because it was more compatible with a certain piece of hardware, namely my ATI TV Wonder VE. I do AutoCAD work from home, so I use it a lot but I didn't have much luck under Win2k with ATI's beta drivers. With Win2k SP1 I would stop errors, but even with older beta builds of XP it would work just fine. Now that I've switched to a Hauppauge tuner card, I think my problems probably had more to do with ATI's junk drivers.

HELP!!! Hercules Geforce 2 MX is using PCI MODE!??

Could you explain a little more what you mean, or maybe post a pic? AGP is actually considered a PCI slot by Windows so I don't know if that's what you mean.

    Sound Blaster Live!

The driver I'm using now is the one that I just installed from Windows Update. Seems to work just fine.

XP-What do you think of it now?

Quote: XP=Win2000 for dummies. XP=Win2k with new features that dummies can't figure out how to disable Seriously, I don't really see that much of a difference from 2k now that I've tweaked it a little and turned off a bunch of unneeded services. However, most of those same services were enabled by default on Win2k just like they are on XP. I just don't see why such a big deal has been made of XP. I mean, it's NT 5.1 which makes it the WinME of the NT world, only it actually works.
