Just an aside, but it's usually preferable not to have the OS on your RAID array if you can afford it. It saves you from this type of hassle, plus, if one drive goes bad, not only do you lose your data, you lose any OS as well. But sometimes it's just cooler to have one striped array =) /L.A

Can you drag it around anywhere? I've done this once or twice, where you create a new toolbar on the desktop and don't realize it. Granted, right-clicking should give you a response as well. Check your Active Desktop settings as well. Maybe there's something goofy in there. /L.A

If you were to set up NAT and port-forwarding, it would work. What happens is the server would receive the connection on the server on say port 1313, and it would see that traffic to that port is to be forwarded to 192.168.0.2 (or whatever your client's IP is) and would forward it. This would end up appearing as just one more hop in the connection. However, you can not set up port forwarding in XP without 3rd-party software. And on top of all that, this would most likely make a direct connection on the server impossible, unless you turned port forwarding off to connect. /L.A

My only thought is that perhaps your problem is not QoS. You can never really expect full 10Mb or 100Mb performance from a network or internet connection unless it's all LAN. If the lag you speak of is in-game, then I can almost guarantee the issue is not QoS but rather the server and your connection to it. /L.A

To my knowledge, you can't. You need to use some sort of Gateway/NAT/Firewall software that will let you specify port-forwarding information. Also, make sure the problem is in fact on your end and not on the other end. Try connecting to two friends who can connect to each other. If they can connect together, but neither can with you, you know the problem is you. /L.A

The extensions version appears to be FrontPage extensions, to me at least. The ftp error is hard to tell without details, but you can check www.eventid.net and that site will give you any reported errors and resolutions found for the specific event id that you receive. Bookmark that site as it can be a GREAT quick tool to if not solve an issue, at least show you where to start looking with your troubleshooting. /L.A

I would suggest checking your video drivers. Either get the latest ones and try them, or download the latest WHQL-certified drivers and try those. Check your sound card drivers while you're at it. Win2k is much pickier about what drivers are used with it than ME (THANK GOD). /L.A

Uh, forgive me for being a bit of a ****, but look in to LiteStep or something. You asked for shells or shell enhancements. LiteStep is a shell for which many shell enhancements are available. I don't see how LiteStep itself doesn't meet your spec, because you can design a skin to appear exactly as you want it, including the start menu when you right-click. If you mean to get your start menu when you right click, but keep the start menu and the explore.exe shell, I think you're out of luck. Things like left- and right mouse button clicks are defined in explore.exe or whatever shell you're using. /L.A

Use the boot floppy that came with your copy of Windows 98 *snicker* or create a boot floppy on another machine running 98 and boot off that. Once you've booted, run "fdisk" and delete your NT partitions (Should just show up as "Non-DOS Partition") and then create a primary partition or partitions. Reboot and boot off the disk again, type "format c:" (then "format d:" etc. etc. until you've formatted all your new partitions) then go to your CD-ROM drive and type "setup". /L.A

The account rights would be relatively easy: user group "Faculty", "Students", and perhaps "Administration". To make the accounts, I would say find a database listing of all the students and try to automate the account creation somehow? My other thought was perhaps you could create a web interface to allow each student to go in, enter his or her information, and then just have you approve the account request. If this were possible, you could have all the students sign up in each english class or homeroom or something. If you did it this way, each student would automatically have to set an initial password so [ideally] no account theft would take place, once the account request data is confirmed. Another thought: if you create the accounts for the students, use their student numbers for the passwords. This should also be easily retrieved from a database query. As for how you could actually do this, you'll have to look elsewhere =) Sorry. Hope this helped a bit though. And, for your sake I hope you're not forced to do this by hand.
