vsbalint, try this. Uninstall the quickcam software. Since these things usually use a mess of tmp and chk files, bring up Windows Explorer and search for *.tmp - then delete them all. Then, search for *.chk and delete them all. Then try to "cleanboot" your computer. What this will do is have the minimum running processes: 1. Click Start --> Run --> Type "MSCONFIG" --> Click OK 2. On the General tab, choose, "Selective Startup" 3. Uncheck "Process SYSTEM.INI file" 4. Uncheck "Process WIN.INI file" 5. Uncheck "Load Startup Items" 6. Click on the Services tab. 7. At the bottom, check "Hide All Microsoft Services" 8. After checking that, uncheck all boxes in the window or click the button labeled "Disable All" 6. Click OK 7. Click "Restart" When Windows comes back up, install your software (remember not to attach the camera before you do this) After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following. 1. Click Start --> Run --> Type "MSCONFIG"--> Click OK 2. On the General tab, choose, "Normal Startup" 3. Click OK 4. Click YES or "Restart", when asked to restart your computer. Maybe then it will install.

Unfortunately, saving and loading under XP is the one problem that no one has figured out. People have been known to take the saved program from an XP system and put it on a 98 computer and it works perfectly.

Suddenly, a problem with e-mail printout sizing

You'd think that the keyboard would have shown a little gratitude for a sip of beer --- shows you how inconsiderate these machines are --- dull personalities caught in a loop of boring sameness. Congratulations in saving it from a life of spiraling addiction. -

Need Help. Cannot access email on windows xp service pack 2
Sampson replied to drussell's topic in Everything New Technology
It sounds like an encryption problem. Perhaps there was a recent fix to IE that changed the way IE worked. Do this: Bring up IE 1) Click on "Tools" 2) Select menu item "Internet Options" 3) Click on the "Advanced" tab 4) Scroll down to the "Security" section 5) Make sure SSL 2.0 and 2.3 are checked If that doesn't help, come back and let us know what version of IE you are using if it isn't 6.0 -

Yeah, the beer dries funny. Even though I swabbed it with isopropyl alcohol, there must have been some sugars or something that just wouldn't let the keys function properly. Worse, it was a Compaq keyboard and the computer howled because it wanted a dyed in the wool Compaq keyboard and not something generic. Oh well, you'll know after a few hours whether you will need to perform surgery. -

In XP normally when you boot up Num Lock and Scroll Lock are off. In 95, 98, ME - Num Lock is on. You can go to your BIOS to change the behavior of the keyboard also. Have been there and done that to the keyboard -- coffee, Coke, beer, you name it, I've spilled it. I had to take the thing apart (mine had a kind of tin foil inside). Used rubbing alcohol to clean it. Gave me a chance to vacuum the keys. Had great success with one machine. However, one keyboard had to be replaced - that was the beer spill. It worked but some keys just seemed not to make contact. -

OE uses the Internet Explorer print engine, so you have to configure IE for printing before you print in OE. To do that, open Internet Explorer and click File | Page Setup. The print font size is also affected by Internet Explorer. If the font is too large or too small, change the text size in Internet Explorer by clicking View | Text Size and then try printing again. This is microsoft's take on it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q276435 -
The problem sometimes are the USB ports themselves. Turn the computer completely off. Then, unplug the powercord from the computer to the wall plug. Leave it unplugged from a half hour to an hour. Then, power up the computer. I know it sounds like voodoo, but it has worked for some.

nVidia drivers are a complete mystery. For some cards the older drivers do seem to work better. But, in your case T&L seem to be the shortcoming. While you are using the most recent drivers the 81.98's, it looks like a PCI card or at least it is an onboard graphics set communicating through the PCI interface. Therefore, if you do have AGP, it is probably only AGP 2.0 or an emulation of it. If perchance you have AGP 4.0, you're in business and can select a number of cards. If you only have AGP 2.0, there are some PCI cards: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=319&

Go with a 17 inch monitor. I don't believe that a 15 inch monitor is capable of that resolution. The cost is not all that different.

As I recall the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX kind of emulates Transform and Lighting, but the chipset does not have it imbedded in it. If your motherboard doesn't either, you will need a new card that supports it. Further, while the game claims to be playable with only 64meg of memory this would be minimal at best. It probably needs 128. Finally, your card fails the directx 8 and 9. The short answer is to install a better card that supports T&L.

FF7 has a lot of quirks in setting it up under XP. A lot of times it is a question of hardware. Could you fill us in as to your motherboard, speed, memory, video card, and sound card?

Simmo: Just as dosfreak posted above - In the c:\windows\repair directory copy the files config.nt and autoexec.nt to c:\windows\system32

By the way, if you feel brave you can edit your boot.ini file and add /noguiboot /sos /bootlog after the /fastdetect in the XP line. This should eliminate the Windows opening screen and let you see the stuff that is being loaded line by line. When it stalls this should let you see the driver or service giving you trouble. It should also create a file ntbtlog.txt in the \windows subdirectory where you can see each line as loaded.

When you boot into safe mode does it still hang? Is the machine on a network or are you using the ethernet to connect you to a modem (or router)? Is this an AMD processor? Are you using a USB keyboard?

As you said when playing a game, there are a lot of processes going on. There are some fellows here who are gamers and can tell you what their experience is with half-life 2. In any event, start with your drivers. nVidia's drivers are not all equal and sometimes, the latest are not the greatest. You might want to visit some sites that talk about drivers and performance like nVnews: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/ or guru of 3d: http://forums.guru3d.com/ . This is not to put you off, but until some of the fellows who have experience with those games come on, this will allow you to read about the ups and downs of drivers and the systems they work well with or mess up. There are also some tweaking tools on those sites that can address "hidden" settings on nVidia cards that might help you get around some of the glitches you mention.

It will be rare when a member of this site will email you with a solution because one never knows how their email address will be treated. Is your machine also an HP?
-
When you bring up the task manager and see what processes are loaded and how much of the CPU time each is taking, is there anything that stands out?

Vsmon.exe has been criticized in ZA for having a memory leak on some systems. Once you've determined that vsmon.exe has this characteristic, it is best to uninstall ZA and find a different solution. Using a router and its firewall characteristics is recommended even when you have a software firewall. And, there are some who find it preferable to set their machines up as you did WRX_Rocky. I know that the Sygate Personal firewall has been acquired by Microsoft, you may still find a free version floating about on the web: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sygate_Personal_Firewall_Free_d3356.html if you want to give it a try.

THE SIMS 2 DIRECTX 9.0C ERROR MESSAGE!! HELP! URGENT!!
Sampson replied to beautflbrunette1's topic in Everything New Technology
Samantha098 the only way that you will be able to play the game with any facility is to buy one of the boards mentioned above and install it and disable your 82815 Graphics Controller. You can try to lower the resolution and a variety of other things that are often suggested, but it will not be a fun experience and you will come to screen that you won't be able to view or you will need a tool that won't appear. -
Well, to check out your DirectX, click on Start-Run-Dxdiag.exe
