    Volume Control

If this is related to a post made recently, you indicated that your sound system used Nvidia sound drivers. You can do as amrican zombie says. You can also right click on My Computer choose Properties, then click on the Hardware tab and click on the button for Drivers. Here you can see what kind of hardware you have installed. You will want to make a note of it. In each are that you click (or right click and choose properties) into, you will see a tab with drivers. You can update the drivers there. For the most part these will be Microsoft drivers that will get your hardware to interface properly, but you won't get the bells, whistles, and nifty extras that come with the specific software from the folks at Nvidia or Creative or whoever made your sound card. These would include programs like testing and volume control , etc. For that, once you know what card you have you will need to go to their webpages and download their updates.

    Windows XP Pro Updates

You can try Microsoft Download page: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en It should take you to other pages. As to IE, generally, you have to clear history, cache, and cookies and then try again. Doesn't usually work, but it is the first thing you are told to do. You do have to have ActiveX accessible or WindowsUpdate simply won't work.

    DxDiag Error

The closest I could come just Googling for an answer is the following: http://www.kbalertz.com/kb_314505.aspx It might start you in a direction that could be helpful.

This is not an easy question to answer since there are so many toggles that can be played with and there are so many things like your privacy and cookie controls that can be set too high. First, and this is just to make sure that your Winsock didn't get corrupted, click on Start>Run: and type "netsh winsock reset" (without the quotation marks). Generally, with IE you sometimes have to start with a clean slate and clear all the cookies, the history, and the cache just in case something in their has messed up the index filing system. Sometimes, it is just the site itself. If you have anti-spyware or anti-virus running in the background these too can have an effect. While it is not a good idea to disable them in general, by doing so, it will allow you to see if they are interfering. You can use a different browser that is not dependent on IE's settings like one of the Mozilla bunch - Firefox, K-Meleon or the old Mozilla Suite and see if they can view the secure web pages. If they can, it means that you will have to tinker with some of the settings in IE until you find out why the secure certificates component is not working.

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Yours is not an easy fix. You didn't say what kind of computer you have and how old it is. From the picture you sent, it is VIA based motherboard. Your best bet is to go to the motherboard's website and see if there is an updated BIOS that you can install. At the time that you bought your computer, BIOS you have installed may not recognize a particular device despite the fact that it has USB ports. Then, there is the question of a VIA update which has to be installed with Windows. I am not certain that eliminating IRQ's is the answer or moving around the boards will do something. These are things we use to do with Win95 and Win98. XP pretty much controls these things in relation to the BIOS

So my computer..is pretty messed up.

It is hard to tell you what to do from the information given. You may have deleted a group of drivers and not simply the volume control since you say that "everything is bigger" meaning that you inadvertantly changed the resolution of your video card or because the drivers for your specific video card are not present, it has reverted to Standard VGA. Just because a computer is running slower does not necessarily mean you have a virus or spyware. It is the case that when you have active anti-virus and anti-spyware running in the background, the machine will always run a tad slower. I am only guessing, but it looks like you have deleted a set of drivers like the sound and video drivers along with others and your system is running on standard drivers. At this juncture, if I were you, I would save my data, get out the disks that came with the computer and clean install Windows.

    Untitled thread

Generally, the more information you provide about your system and the operating, the easier it is to help you. In general, when you get this message, your a) internet service provider is down, your connection to the server has been dropped and your machine is not recognized, or c) windows is not configured through your network connection.

    Registry Export Error.

I am not certain why it is giving you a "disk full" error, but as I understand it, while you can export hives, they are exported in binary format, and as far as I know cannot be re-imported. In other words, what is in there is your machine's configuration at a machine language level.

    Password on harddrive?

If it is your computer, and you have an account for yourself and a nosy sister, I really don't understand why you don't password your account, but it doesn't make sense to make your own account less than the privileges of an Administrator. As long as you have an Administrator account that is not passworded (or eliminated), anyone would be able to get into your system. But, to answer your question, an account with an Administrator's privileges can do pretty much what they want. Once an account is set up and passworded, it depends what privileges you have assigned to that account. You could exclude her from using certain programs and accessing certain directories. If your own account does not have the privileges of the Administrator, to limit her, you would have to login as Administrator everytime you wanted to exclude her use of the computer.

    Puzzling Address Book problem

You know that the file isn't being changed, but the database doesn't. The database interprets the read only status at the file level to be a lockout of all the records within the file. It therefore cannot open any of the records in any part of the file. That's just the way databases work to avoid "the dreaded record lock problem." Just as Asimov invented the three-fold rule to keep robots from killing humans (though there was a loophole), designers of databases created as their first rule that no two users could work on the same record at the same time to preserve data integrity (later, the better databases limited it to "no two users could access the same field in the same record at the same time.")

    Password on harddrive?

You will need to set up profiles in your users accounts. Set yourself up with your own name and give yourself full Administrative privileges and password your logon. You can then delete the Administrators account if you like or give it a password. Then, set your sister up with her own Account with limited privileges such that you exclude her access to certain programs and subdirectories and give her the password to her account. On the other hand, if she is accessing your machine through a peer to peer network, you can easily make any directories on your system shareable with a password.

    Puzzling Address Book problem

Essentially, Outlook express uses a database storage system. There are Windows operating locks on files which are nothing other than the attributes like archive, read only, system, and hide to name a few. But, when a database wants to open a read only file, the database "perceives" the record as locked and therefore as being used by someone else and will not release that record to you until someone finishes changing the columns in that record, It is called record locking and is standard operating procedure in all databases. If two users were to access the same record at the same time, the database would not know which users had the most correct information, so it automatically locks all others out until the first one who accessed the record is finished. Hence, a read only file (which may have multiple records) is "perceived" by the database attempting to access those records as all locked and therefore it can access none of them.

    Motherboard/Video Card Incompatible

I had lightening hit one of my units. It took out the dialup modem (which was an external modem hooked to a serial port), the serial port and then discretely made its way to the processor itself. The motherboard was fine, but the processor would not work with the peripherals properly. The machine would run fine with anything that read from the hard drive, but change a setting on the video card (which happened not to be affected by the lightning), and the unit would go south. Personally, I wouldn't go through anymore software tests. Since the unit is 5 years old, you would be better served to get a new unit or slap a new motherboard and processor into the old case. Be sure your Power pack is up to the task and you have plenty of ventilation.
  15. Go to this page http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp and find your laptop. See if there are any updated drivers for it. Even if not updated, you might download and install those that are available. This may or may not restore your sound and CD. If it does, you are golden. If not, get out your Windows 98 disk. You may need to re-install Windows. Of course, if you re-install, you will have to download the patches for 98 off of Microsoft's update webpage.

    DELL 8200 plans

Most Dell units have the video, sound, and ethernet integrated into the motherboard. So, moving them would be impossible. In the scenario in which Dell has a separate video card and sound card apart from the motherboard, keep in mind that Dell often uses modified drivers for those cards. You could probably move the CD and the floppy drive, but for the cost, you would do better just getting them off the shelf. As to the hard drive, Dell is also peculiar. I don't remember whether they still use the same trick as Compaq where they put special info on their hard drives that makes them incompatible with other drives. I guess the long and the short of it is, it all depends on what you are going to use the machine for. If you are going to play a lot of games, you might want to consider an AMD processor. If you are going to play with video editing, use an INTEL processor. Any number of motherboards will have both video and audio built in. It is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing separate boards. But, depending on what you will use the machine for, know that this option will limit you. The bottom line is that if you are going to build a new machine, put it together the way you want and leave the Dell alone. You will bump into one headache after another if you try cannibalizing parts. Besides, with a good router (or switcher), you can network the two machines to practically operate as one by sharing peripherals or the internet.
  17. It really depends on two things 1) what your system is loading in the background and 2) how you are networked to your sister. Check to see what processes are running. Hold down Ctrl-Shift-ESC and look at them. To see what is in the startup area click on the Start button, click on Run and then type msconfig and his enter. It is in the Startup area that most often processes placed there by spyware get a foothold and place things whick slow a system down. If you are using a firewall, you need to configure it so that your sister's machine is in a trusted zone (if, in fact, you do trust her). Finally, tell us how you and your sister are networked. Are you using a router?

After you check to make sure that all of your boards are properly seated, make sure that nothing is grounding something on the motherboard - it could be as simple as a screw.

    removing items frm msconfig

To remove these items permanently you will have to go into the registry. Since this is sometimes intimi[censored], go here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml and download this little applet. You can use this interface to get into the registry and get rid of the programs in your startup folder and run or runonce registry entries.

    removing items frm msconfig

Look for a file called "hosts". Generally it is under \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts . There is normally only one entry 127.0.0.1 localhost . That is its default. Delete all other entries unless you put them there. After altering this file, run your spyware and anti-virus to rid yourself of those gremlins so that they don't re-edit the hosts file. You might also want to Run BHODemon.
  23. Thank you. That clears that up and it is one more theory that can be eliminated from your delay.
  24. Sorry. By local "base" I meant that DSL has a 10 mile range away from the telephone exchange or retransmission station. Depending on your home or office's physical placement in relation to the phone exchange, affects the strength of the signal.

    win32 application

Unwise.exe is the uninstaller for the wise installation program when you install certain programs. If you connect to the yahoo messenger using an icon on the desktop, right click on the icon and click on properties properties. Look at the Target entry. If it gives you the path and unwise.exe, simply use windows explorer and using the path you found click to that folder and look for the yahoomessenger execution file. You can either right click on it and drag it to your desktop and respond to the prompt to "create icon here" of you can get the name of the program and type over the unwise.exe with the proper messenger.exe in the Target entry. If you do the former, it will create a new icon and you can delete the old icon.
