If you just want to stop autocomplete for addresses: At the top of your Internet Explorer select "Tools". Select "Internet Options" from the drop down menu. Click on the "Content" tab at the top of the Internet Options window. In the Personal Information area, click on the button "AutoComplete..." Click the check mark for Web Addresses so it will be unchecked. Click "OK". Then click "OK" to close the Internet Options window.

Contact your service provider. That really is the first step.

Probably lack of horsepower - you are using a 1.2 Celeron. Despite the fact that you have a nice video card, the fade effect and the translucent effect are very dependent on the processor.

Programs close by themselves when using mouse with Laptop
Sampson replied to videobruce's topic in Hardware
Holy Water maybe? An exorcist perhaps? I've never heard of a problem like this, but some browsers give you options under their tools for mice, for example, the side button or the middle button. Perhaps, there is a check mark that needs to be clicked. Don't leave us in suspense if you find the answer. -
I have only read about it but never tried it. Apparently you can create "symbolic links" under 2K/XP which allow you to create folders on one drive which act as aliases to another drive. Sapiens74 solution is very clever and you might want to try it first. Anyway, the software to accomplish symbolic links is found here: http://www.pearlmagik.com/winbolic/

You are supposed to disconnect after you click on Stop but before you click on OK. After you've disconnected, then click OK.
-
Look at this link. There may be a clue because you should be able to select your device and stop it. Generally, hitting stop tells you it is safe to remove it. Before hitting OK, you remove the device, then hit OK.: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...dh_dmt_cgwi.asp Does your system not have an icon showing?

Massive data upload when dialup adapter is running
Sampson replied to videobruce's topic in Software
There was a virus that did this same kind of thing called the Backdoor.NTHack virus. Norton's explains it here: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.nthack.html -
Massive data upload when dialup adapter is running
Sampson replied to videobruce's topic in Software
It sounds a lot like the Opaserv virus. Check to see if there are any of these files: ALEVIR.EXE, BRASIL.EXE, BRASIL.PIF, SCRSVR.EXE or MARCO!.SCR on the hard drive. There is also another Trojan called Q-Hosts. See if the hosts file occurs more than once. -
Intriguing question. OS/2 was used in the banking industry for years in the US especially in ATM's. There is a book by Paul Carroll called Big Blues, the Unmaking of IBM, which goes into the IBM mentality and how it dealt with a force called Bill Gates. It doesn't answer your question, which is speculative, but it does go into why OS/2 failed to capture the PC user along with other areas that IBM failed to comprehend or exploit.

You could try the following to see if it is the modem. Power down the computer, disconnect the modem. Start the computer. Then press, Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the Task Manager. Just leave that run for about an hour. You can switch between the Processes and Performance tabs. Note the fan's cutting in and out. Then, power down. Connect the modem. If you want to wait a while, do so. Power up. Again press Ctrl-Shift-Esc. For an hour note the fan cut in and what processes are running as well CPU usage when you go to the performance tab. If CPU usage is higher, it will normally run hotter. If there is no change, then go online keeping the task manager operating in the background and watch the CPU usage - both when you are using your browser or when you have logged off.

Sorry, Click on Files, Folders, Compact or Compact all.
-
You can compact the folders from Outlook Express rather than Outlook. If you don't have a shortcut to Outlook Express you can make one: "%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe". Then, when it comes up, and assuming that it retains the Accounts from Outlook, on the Menu, Click on Folders, Folders, then Compact or Compact all folders.

You've written here about this before. See if this will work. Do the following: To unplug or eject devices Open Add/Remove Hardware in Control Panel. Click Next, click Uninstall/Unplug a device, and then click Next. Click Unplug/Eject a device, and then click Next. Select the device you want to unplug or eject, and then click Next. Click Next to confirm that you want the device unplugged or ejected. Click Finish. If the little icon appears, double click it. There is a box below that you can check to have it appear everytime it sees this device. Click on Stop, remove the device, then click OK, then close.

If you are talking strictly about spyware blockers that run in memory and are active in intercepting spyware, two that I know of and use are Pest Patrol and Spy Sweeper. Pest Patrol is a yearly subscription. Spy Sweeper is free with one free definition update, then it is a yearly subscription. Both of these will sweep the hard drive for programs, cookies and registry entries that look suspicious in addition to interception. Ad Aware, the free version, does not run in memory. However, it will run through the hard drive as the other two do to alert you to what may be spyware on your hard drive. Of the three Pest Patrol seems to be the most comprehensive.

The best defraggers for disks and registry
Sampson replied to silicongod's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have used O & O Defrag pretty much exclusively. As to the registry, there are several programs you could look at. SysInternals puts out a hive defragmenter called SystemFile Defragmenter (it's free). Likewise, System Mechanic (shareware) has a similar defragmenter. Dachsund Software puts out Hare which also "defragments" in its own way the registry. It's shareware. -
Those are pretty normal temperatures for that machine. Remember that the Pentium IV's do throttle back if the temperatures go to high.

TweakUI 1.33 is the one than most W2K users seems to have the best luck with. If you are really interested in tweaking W2K look at X-Setup. Tweak UI 1.33 here: http://download.com.com/3000-2341-2830963.html?tag=lst-0-1 X-Setup here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=127

Without knowing the specific motherboard, in general, Sapiens74 is correct. Some the Canterwood and Springdale boards, however, do have memory issues. The point is, since you are speaking about "faster", does this mean that you also may intend to overclock your board? If it does, you would be better served to remove the stick of slower memory altogether and use your faster memory.

According to PestPatrol this is a keylogger also known as Starr. This is their take on removing it: http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/other/007_starr.asp

Or, with XP you can: 1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC 2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System. 3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire.

Start regedit from Run then System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom] Value Name: Autorun Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0=disable, 1=enable)

The mystery of those messages you get from error codes can mean almost anything. There are several candidates. 1) your rage card's drivers may not be compatible. 2) From your description of your hard drive, you may not have enough room to install the new system. 3) There is a possible a Via 4in1 driver update needed to make W2K acceptable on your system.
