Open dialog and removable media don't remember view settings
Curley_Boy posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
Is thier a way to force XP to remember the folder view settings on the open boxes and on removable media folders? On normal local explorer windows it remembers its settings fine but for floppies, CD-ROMs etc it doesn't seem to remember... even if I use the shift+close option. Also the services applet which I use alot doesn't save its view settings which is a real annoyance cus I have to keep maximising it... widening the columns and reorganising the list before i can use it. -
I'm not sure if this is a VIA or Windows problem but here goes.. I've just installed XP Pro new onto my PC and was browsing away on the net listening to Winamp and suddenly my ears are filled with a high pitched scream.... and my PC hard locks ;( I have a Creative SB PCI 128 (CT4700), and im using the XP native drivers as creative don't support the card any more. I checked on the unofficial KT7 FAQ site, and followed all the recommended BIOS tweaks: Memory Hole: 15M-16M PCI Master Read Caching: Enabled KT_CLK_CTL: Optimal PCI Delay Transaction: Enabled Then installed the PCI Lantency patch and turned down sound accelaration. Elsewhere I've read that Creative cards don't like ACPI, when I ran Windows 2000 there was an option in the setup to disable this... not so in XP. (or if there was I couldn't find it). Is there any other way (other than a clean install for me to disable ACPI support in XP?) My BIOS, 3R for the ABIT KT7E, won't allow me to disable it I remember having this problem under 2k awhile back whilst playing CS but I can't remember what I did to fix it ;( !! Has anyone else come across this problem or have any ideas for me (its only happened once so far... but its annoying and scares the hell outta you when it does). Sound Blaster PCI 128 (CT4700) screams and hard locks XP PC
Curley_Boy replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Hardware
I orginally had a Sound Blaster Live installed in the system but under 2000 I kept getting stop 0xE1 errors with it.. so I swapped it for the 128 thats in this PC now. Under XP all the major problems I had with the 128; stuttering, crackling and poor performance under some games seems to have been fixed. Hopefully the tweaks mentioned in my 1st post will solve the remaining problem (hasn't occured again to date). The problem really lies with the Mobo & Sound Card not the OS. I'd only consider upgrading the card if I had any more major problems I couldn't fix (as I've never really been a great fan of EAX). -
Is the XP serial key stored in the registry?

Thx Chaosman that util was most helpful! -
I have 2 hd's in the PC atm: Primary Master: Maxtor 30.1Gb ATA-133 (BOOT, SYSTEM & PROGRAMS) Primary Slave: Maxtor 20.4Gb ATA-100 (FILE STORAGE) both disks are nearly full and I'm thinking of purchasing another Maxtor 80Gb drive to replace the boot drive and use the remaining 2 as backup/storage drives. The thing is I have my OS setup exactly as I want it now and don't want to spend ages reconfiguring it doing a fresh install. What program could I buy (or download if theres a freeware one) that would allow me to duplicate my primary disk to the new 80Gb one? I'm using W2000 SP3 btw. ta

I have a problem with GTA 3... after it's been running for about an hour or so it starts to get really slow and jerky (HDD gets accessed alot). Before I start it I always close down all progs/background & taskbar apps and non essential services etc and defrag the HD. I've installed all the XP fixes and updated my drivers, basically all the standard stuff. (I've tried the 1.1 patch but that didn't help, just made the visuals rubbish so I took it off again). The first time I started it on XP I found I had the D3D+Nvidia problem (ie corrupt GFX and stuttering). So I used the d3d8.dll from the Windows 2000 DX 8.1b package as a workaround. The corruption prob was solved (and all other D3D games work fine). Are there any XP services/progs that start when the PC is 'idle' or is it simply running out of memory after a time? (I have 256 RAM), never used to happen under 2000 though...

Thanks for the replies... maybe I just need more RAM, I was going to go for 512 in the near future anyhow, so I guess this settles it. I already use DTools for GTA3 (and others) anyhow, and I agree its a great app

Ever since I installed Sun JRE for Windows and the QuickTime 6 Java plugin.. my browsers (IE 6 & Mozilla 1.1) have gone wonky. For a start I couldn't use the MS JM for sites that needed it (even after I disabled and uninstalled both plugins). Eg on microsoft.com none of the animated side bars work and the text size is too big (no matter what I set it to). I've tried repairing IE and then uninstalling it (down to IE 5.01, and re-installing 6). Java still doesn't work!! now sites that use .gif files don't display properly (in IE they either appear as small versions of that 'cannot find server page' or the square with the little red x in the corner). In Mozilla .gifs are just blank space or black boxes, and of course Java doesn't work because I uninstalled the Sun plugin (the reason this whole mess started was becasue I was trying to get Java support in Mozilla). 1. How on earth do I get IE and Mozilla working again (I've tried restoring some file type associations... enabling .gif animations and turning on VM in IE). Doesn't Work! 2. Assuming this thing is repairable I'm I ever going to see the day when IE 6 and MS VM can work alongside Mozilla and Sun JRE on the same PC happly and without conflicts?! ;(

Appropriate Disk and Registry ACLs on 2000 Pro ??
Curley_Boy posted a topic in Customization & Tweaking
In an attempt to increase security I want to replace any ACL entries on my disks and registry hives from 'Everyone' to 'Authenticated Users'. However I'm sure this being windows... that this will have some nasty side affects.. Do any programs (Including Windows) require the 'Everyone' setting to be enabled in the Registry or on disk? -
Hmm well after the install of SP3 the system refused to unload the registry profile for my administrator account (and worked perfectly on revert to SP2). I think I'm getting there now... but it's still happening intermitently. And I sometimes get an error whilst accessing the new program and access thingy in control panel. I can live with these slight annoyances for the security benifit that SP3 (hopefully) provides.

My UT takes ages to switch resolution too... haven't found a fix, just grin and bear it I guess

before you try anything so drastic have you tried re-installing the Windows installer? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=32832&area=search&ordinal=2

I've already posted this on the SP3 feedback section, but since I got no reply I'm appealing again. After the installation of SP3 Windows 2000 can't unload my registry profile. Even if I reboot directly after the SP install. If I uninstall back to SP2 it works fine again ;( The other user accounts I have installed log on and off as normal its just my adminstrator one that can't. Since not many other ppl aside me use this machine I can use the hibinate feature to bypass log off, but driver / system updates still require a reboot!

Logging off Administrator account fails after install of SP3
Curley_Boy replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Software
Ah got it! * Edited the local security policy so the 'rename administrator' setting matched my user account name. * Gave full access rights on the Administrator folder to: PC\Administrator (Me), PC\Administrators and PC\SYSTEM. * Disabled folder/file encryption on that directory. Phew well I got there in the end.. thx for all the advice btw! -
On the automatic updates 'issue'... I've decided I didn't want MS to deliver 'updates' to my pc without my knowledge either so... I disabled the automatic updates feature in control panel. And stopped and disabled the following 2 services 'Automatic Updates' and 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service'. Oh and blocked access to the svchost.exe file thorough my firewall IF that doesn't stop the damned thing im not sure what will!

Logging off Administrator account fails after install of SP3
Curley_Boy replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Software
No I'm afriad I don't really see what you mean.. sorry! ;( The Access rights for the root of C: Drive is 'Everyone = Full' with files and subfolders having thier own unique access rights. I had set my 'Documents and Settings\Administrator' folder to Administrator (Thats me btw) & System = Full. Instead of the default 'Aministrators Group & System = Full'. In addition to this I applied encryption to my documents folder. I tried disabling encryption and handing back the default access rights to the Adminstrator folder but that didn't solve anything. Regedt32 shows the registry ACLs are ok (I didn't touch those anyhow). The only other thing I can think of is that I renamed my Administrator account using the Computer management snap-in. (but not changed the entry in the Local Security Policy settings). Would this have anything to do with it do you think? The thing is non of my security settings have caused a problem in the past, SP2 runs ok... the only thing that has been changed is the installation of SP3 -

Ok me and some m8s are having a LAN party this friday. 5 PCs: 4 running 2000 Pro 1 running Me (I know!) One 2000 PC will be the server for most of our games and the machines will be connected to an 8 port hub, PCs have 10/100mb PCI cards installed in them. Client for MS network, TCP/IP, and MS File/Print Sharing is in use. Workgroup is 'LOCAL' and net addresses are static starting at 192.168.0.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Do I need to configure anything else for faster speed? (bearing in mind im no network pro and have no server software). Oh the Me PC (god stupid bro's thing) is there any way of making it see the 2000 file shares? (one has an NTFS partition). ta in advance

Can anyone tell me how to remove a .dll file (specifically VPCShExH.dll) from my system that got installed with Virtual PC 4? I uninstalled the Prog from add/remove as usual and then tried rebooting and deleting the C:\Program Files\Connectix Virtual PC folder. Just got the 'Access is denied file in use' message. When I tried the 'regsvr32 /u' command it says: 'vpcshexh.dll was loaded, but the DllUnregisterServer entry point was not found. DllUnregisterServer may not be exported, or a corrupt version of vpcshexh.dll may be in memory. Consider using Pview to delete or remove it.' According to the DLLView util the file is being loaded by Window's Explorer.exe So how do I get rid of this annoying file anyone?

Thanks again, problem solved! -
Thanks! I have the food / DVD situation sorted We usually use the Guest account to access file shares. (The Me PC being the only problem there but we just give files to that one if needed). Heres to many hours of drunken fragging!

After installing SP3 on my 2k Pro system everytime I log off I get a 'can't unload your user profile error'. Takes forever to log off... Uninstalled to SP2 and it works fine, put SP3 back on and rebooted immidiatly after log in, and i get the same problem. Anyone suggest anything? The exact event log error is: Windows cannot unload your registry class file. If you have a roaming profile, your settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator. DETAIL Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)). Event ID: 1000
