My PC won't detect my Logitech Formula Force Wheel

Well my wheel is installed and working now (I should have tried turning on plug n play support in the BIOS 1st!) ;( However in NFSIII I can't get my right paddle to work in game (the wingman software detects it, and so does NFSIII in the menus, but it fails to work during a race).

How to get the local clipboard function to work?

Well I tried it with TCP and it made no difference I already have admin accounts mirrored on each machine like you suggest so rights shouldn't be a problem. This looks more like a policy setting as it appears to be a problem on both XP machines when the NT one would work fine. I also discovered this in the event log, don't know if it would be of any use: NETDDE Listen failed: 23: The ncb_lana_num member did not specify a valid network number.

MK trilogy, House of dead I, Virtual Squad 1

House of the Dead worked on my Win2k machine so it should work fine on XP. MK Trilogy requires an application compatibility patch, link and install instructions below: http://www.gametalk.com/talk/pc/mortal_kombat_trilogy/58691696.htm Install the Windows 95 version of the game, then install the above patch and run the game in Win 2000 compatibility mode. Virtual Squad (never heard of it, do you mean virtua cop?) in which case yes it does with no problems, I haven;t had a single problem with sega games they all run outta the box with no fiddling about .

How to get the local clipboard function to work?

Nope no domain here! Just a mixed OS workgroup I will try switching the lan over to TCP/IP tempoarily to see if that makes a difference (use IPX for security reasons). If it is a policy setting is it likely to be a per user or a system wide restriction? In either case which registry keys are involved or do I have to go through group polices? (which to my knowledge I haven't applied).

How to get the local clipboard function to work?

NetDDE and related services are running on both machines but I only get the local clipboard on the NT PC. Are you sure it doesn't rely on TCP/IP? I can connect from the NT PC to the XP one via the clipboard, but on both machines most of the menu options are greyed out, so I can't share any information copied to the clipboard anyhow.

My PC won't detect my Logitech Formula Force Wheel

Systemboard: ABIT KT7E Chipset: VIA Apollo KT-133E (VT8363E Northbridge, VT82C686B Southbridge) BIOS: Award 6.00PG, ABIT 3R Only my wheel connected to the USB ports I will try again in a few days and report back (got a ton of essays to do atm) as stated before it worked perfectly a few months ago (both with default WinXP drivers and those provided by the Logitech website) Since then I have done a system re-install, so God knows what's been changed since then!

Help Toshiba SD-M1212 dvd-rom not running in UDMA mode

This is another really annoying 2k/XP bug present on VIA chipsets (especially involving devices connected to the 2nd ide channel). Periodically (and for God knows what reason) Windows forgets the correct transfer rate settings for a given ide channel. I'll assume that you have checked that the hardware is not faulty, set it up right, and has all the relavent uptodate drivers installed. If you have done all this and it still doesn't detect the correct speed settings then this is 99% garenteed to solve it: Open regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Look at the subkeys at this location. You need 0001 (if your device is attached to your Primary IDE Channel) and 0002 (if it's on the Secondary one). When you've found the right subkey you need to alter the following DWORD values: MasterDeviceTimingMode (delete this value) MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed (enter a hex value of ffffffff) **note: If your device is set as a Slave, then edit the appropriate DWORD values in the same pane and leave the Master ones alone.
  8. How do you get WMP9 to save file opened history? I've set it to do so in the options and tried re-running the setup program to no effect. Media Player 6.4 stores it's history fine, but not version 9. Which registry keys store this information, I'm guessing: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\RecentFileList or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences Could anyone help me with annoying problem? Also there is a delay (of about 5 secs or more) when I use the open dialog to open files in WMP9. My music folder (in my profile dir) is on a different drive to the boot one, and the drive is compressed (but not my profile dir). I don't know if this makes any difference, as no other players have this delay. Windows XP Pro SP1
  9. The link to the 'My Music' folder on the XP start menu seems to have lost it's icon (you know usually it's a pic of a folder with a music note overlayed on it). It's just a blank folder now. Also the same if you view it in My Documents through Windows Explorer or in the Open dialog boxes. I can't remember when this started. I had been playing about with Stardock's Icon XP before it expired, but it restored all the other icons perfectly. The only other thing I can think of is that I moved my user profile directory from the usual C:\Documents and Settings\... to my secondary HDD. Again though no other programs or system components have compained. I thought it was possible to change the icon pic by using a registry tweak (like with other 'special' system folders (ie Recycle Bin), but I haven't a clue where to start looking. Any help appriciated.
  10. Thankyou to sapiens74 I already had tweakxp installed... why on earth didn't I think of using that first... *sigh* forever overlooking the obvious! CUViper I had a look at the desktop.ini file and aside for the username entry (obviously) both my file and your description of it were identical.
  11. Well I'm sure the video drivers are working properly on them as they load up properly in 800x600x16 ... surely if it wasn't then they would crash on boot or revert to vga mode. And I'm not sure how I'm supposed to find out this little black screen trick either... *wanders up to the student support desk* "Er excuse me, I just noticed that some of your workstations over there in the corner appear to boot up with a black screen rather than the default blue one... Nice trick care to tell me how it's done?"
  12. I will try the wallpaper reg hack you suggested. But I'm sure the boot screen colour is changeable (as it is black on some of the NT workstations in the uni library).

Only have 16 colors as a choice?

Sometimes (for whatever reason) Windows will only list a limited set of colours for you to choose even though your GFX Card/drivers/monitor etc maybe able to display many more. Happened to me when I installed DX 2 on an ol Win95 PC. Try the following (I'll assume you have the lastest SP and drivers installed for the GFX card OS & monitor): On the settings tab of the display properties dialog choose 'List all modes' button. Choose the mode that you want, click 'test' and if all is well 'ok'. If that doesn't work then (start->run->regedit) HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\... You should then see 2 subkeys here: VGASave (the system default vga driver) and another relating to your GFX card (on my system this is called promnt), if your not sure look in your '\System32\Drivers' folder as the subkey shares the same name as your GFX card driver. Now highlight the key that corrisponds to your video driver and then the Device0 subkey now edit the following DWORD value in the right hand pane: 'DefaultSettings.BitsPerPixel' change this to a decimal value of 8 for 256 colours or 16 for 16bit 'High Colour' and so on. You can also set your screen resolution and refresh rate here, the DWORD values should be pretty self explanatory. Hope this helps somewhat
  14. I'm trying to run some games that require vesa support to run correctly in virtual pc. (Tomb Raider & An all new world of Lemmings). My guest OS in VPC is Windows 95 (4.00.950). The detected video card for the guest is the S3 Trio 32/64 PCI. Does anyone have any links for some 95 compatible drivers that will work with the above card? (assuming they will even work in VPC, but we can hope). Im using Virtual PC 4.36 in Windows XP Pro SP1.

Need help finding a VESA driver for my guest OS in VirtualPC

Thanks for the link although I already tried those utilities before.... the in game movies, although they play, are distorted and serverly interlaced. Not a biggie though their nothing to get exited over and I have seen them a millon times before... just trying to get that 'perfect emulation' experience you know? I know Tomb Raider can run flawlessly under XP, however I run it under VPC because the sound card on my system has the notorious VIA 686B/ SoundBlaster crackling bug, which is noticable in VDMSound on the game but not in VPC.

Cleaning out the system32 folder on XP

I already have cleaned out the majority of my system. I just want to complete the finishing touches. The system32 folder contains *alot* of windows componants that I will never make any use of (unused shell extensions, drivers for hardware that I have no intention of adding to the system, networking componants, example scripts, language files, and .dll's for disabled services that are of no use etc) the list goes on and on... The Windows folder as it stands now is 530mb and most of that is the system32 dir, so I want to ditch componants that are of no use. The problem here is to backup 'junk' files so they are easy to restore if I break something, then ontop of that are all the registry dependanies... ones for dlls and exe's relating to services are buried deep and scattered all over the place.
  17. I have set it to a perminant size of 300Mb on my secondary HD and all is well.
  18. Can anyone explain strange stop error I am reciving? Whenever I try to increase the size of my pagefile I recive a 0xC24 stop error in dmio.sys. The only way I can increase the page file without generatng this error is in safe mode. There are a couple of things that might be to blame: 1. One or other of my disks is on the way out I think, takes a while to spin up on boot, clicks etc (although the utlity program that came with it can find no data corruption.. yet). 2. I have upgraded my disks to dynamic volumes, but I hear the Logical Disk Service (and it's Administrative partner) need to be active when using this types of disk. I don't use any 4 in 1 drivers though (just the default WinXP ones) Disks: Maxtor 5T030H3 (Primary Master, NTFS, Dynamic System volume) Maxtor 52049H4 (Primary Slave, NTFS, compressed Dynamic Volume) Contains pagefile.sys (perminant 300Mb) System board: ABIT KT7E, Bios 3R OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
  19. It's turns out that it was my virus checker that was causing the BSOD. Odd as AVG says its XP compatible... oh well at least thats more more mysterious crash cleared up.
  20. Yes it makes no difference, whenever I start in normal mode and try and increase the pagefile size I get the stop error. No matter though... I have it as I like now, and if I ever need to resize it I know the safe mode method works, but out of interest i would like to know what is causing the crash.

Improve sound performance in VPC 4.36

Is there any way to improve sound performance in VPC? I use it to play Worms and Worms Re-enforcements, but the sound breaks up into static and is often lagged. Other games that I play this way (Tombraider, Mech2 etc) are fine. Host PC: Windows XP Pro SP1 Guest OS: Windows 95 OEM (32 RAM)

    Any tweaks for Progman.exe?

Having just starting using Program Manager as my shell for XP I was wondering whether I could tweak it in any way. For example change the background colour from the default drab grey, specify where minimized apps go (top instead of bottom of the screen), alter group names once they have been created, create a group called 'Startup' and have shortcuts I place in that load with my user profile (like in Win 3.1 & NT 3.x) and change the text on the title bar etc etc Any ideas welcome, Thanks.
  23. My PF usage (assuming the value on the performance tab of taskmanager is the value we are mesuring here) for my system on boot is 56Mb, with most of my favourite web browsers/mp3 players/IM clients etc open its about 160Mb. However with a Game like RTCW on top of that it can be anywhere from 650Mb to almost a Gb. I currently have the page file split between 2 HDs 50/50 with a total size of 768Mb. Can I get away with less than this with such a hog like RTCW?
  24. In an effort to speed up my XP system I have been disabling unessary devices in the device manager, GUI now loads at 30secs from cold boot Now everytime I load device manager all the hardware and drivers I have disabled have the red crosses through them. Is there any way to tweak device manager to only expand the display to show disabled or problem devices when *I* want?
  25. Curley_Boy

    Any way to disable explorer?

Yes I use both Progman and File Manager in XP... worth their weight in gold, super fast, super light (not leaky) and super stable
