    Separating Wireless and wired networks

Talk about paranoid? Do you actually think there is someone living in your neighborhood possesing the knowledge to get inside your system? Not to mention, having the equipment it takes to get inside via wireless? Besides, what do you have on your network that anyone would want, or would want to maliciously tamper with? I understand that security is extremely important, but the whole idea of someone going thru the extreme amount of trouble just so they can they can look at your p0rn and w@rez collection is highly unlikely. Now I would feel differently if this was pertaining to a multi-million dollar company, dozens of employees, and 300 gigs worth of private documents....But sometimes people let security get in the way of actually learning about and having fun with having a 'home' network. Are all of your clients grabbing IP's via the DHCP in your PDC? If I am correct, and if you're using 2 network cards, you could set up 2 DHCP servers on your PDC and setup the second server to only spit-out 1 IP address thru the card that goes to your WAP11. And on that second DHCP server, just setup that 1 IP to be reserved for the mac address of your laptop. That way, your laptop will still be able to grab all of the resources from the server(WINS, DNS, etc...), and be on its own 'filtered' seperate network. Now I have no idea if it will work, or if it's even possible, but it's worth mentioning none-the-less.
  2. You've been working in Linux/Samba and NT4 Server, and you don't even understand the basics of WINS?? Dude! Do exactly as Clutch said, set up a WINS server on your network. If you're already running an NT4 machine, there is NO reason why you shouldn't.....Ecspecially considering it takes about 5 minutes to install the service and configure it.

Recommendations for an ftp /http server

Well said... I also know many certified individuals that don't know sh*t....I see them everyday. And it totally disgusts me that they're even getting thru their day without getting fired. Anyway...Like you and I both said, It's all good !!

Recommendations for an ftp /http server

Yah, your flame against my intelligence was really necessary ;( Yes, Clutch did set me up....with some tips and tricks that only a person of his experience could even comprehend. My network runs flawlessly, nonstop, and without any security worries, thanks to him. And my network is far more than just a couple personal computers hooked together with a hub....sometimes I wish it was that easy. I have other MSCE friends that visit and they all ask dozens of questions when they stop by....they just can't believe it actually works as well as it does. A lot of people start out with Apache simply because it's what they heard from their friend who installs RAM at Best-Buy ;(. So with that said, I have complete trust in a guy that has worked with IIS for years and chooses it over Apache, rather than someone who just doesn't use it because their buddy said it sucks. Sapiens, I'm not directing any of that directly at you...But I am saying I hope you didn't learn about your favorite alternative to IIS from your friend at Best-Buy:D without actually giving IIS the time it takes to truly realize that it's just as good as Apache. Sometimes your biased opinion is not always the best choice for someone else....Ecspecially when we're talking about someone who is doing it too learn and have fun with a home hobby network. Yah...It's all good

Recommendations for an ftp /http server

I tryed Apache for about 3 hours....Then I woke up and realized, "Why they hell would I want to install and configure Apache, when IIS is already installed, requires almost no configuration, does the same thing as Apache, and does host headers !!"

Recommendations for an ftp /http server

Quote: Do not use IIS period. Stay away from it like the plague Yah...ok. We're talking about setting a home based hobby server merely for hosting pictures or whatever, there is no better choice than IIS. Clutch set me up with IIS and 2K Server about a year ago and it couldn't be better. I'm hosting our lan party's website, ftp, forum, and other things from IIS....and it runs flawlessly. Now, if you're worried about security, then think again....because if you're smart, they're shouldn't be anything on your home network hobby system that could ruin your life if somebody got ahold of. Yes, some very rare hacker kid could start hosting a pr0n or w@rez on your server, but that's nothing a simple reformat couldn't fix. Besides, if you properly patch IIS with URLscan, service packs, and the lock-down tool, then you will be fine for running a home based webserver.

    Restricting Internet Access With ADSL

On my router, there is a section for restricting certain clients(IP's) from accessing the net. The problem is, you would have to make absolutely sure that the said client receives the same IP everytime, which can be tricky when the client machine is a laptop that gets reconnected every morning. Just my thoughts... -Klark

    The Motherboard Thread...

Quote: I haven't seen anybody describe ASUS as junk yet I'm refering to people in other forums, who are totally against certain brands....Just as many of you participating in this post dislike the FIC brand. If you dig deep enough into the hardcore overclocking forums, you'll find plenty of people that believe Asus is junk. Granted, they are few and far between....But these are the people I was refering too....

    The Motherboard Thread...

I've been using Asus for a few years, and for a good reason....they work. My buddy has an Abit KT7A-Raid, and it's total horsesh*t. We changed-out 3 sticks of ram, 2 videocards, and even a simple NIC, and his board still BSOD's about once a day. I'm ordering my new system this week: Asus P4B266, P4 1.8A, and 1gig of Mushkin. I'm sure all will go well....As I have total faith in Asus. -Klark PS: One thing I have noticed, is that most of the people who claim Asus is junk, have been using generic ram. I have used Mushkin ram in my Asus boards for almost 3 years, and I never have a problem. Mushkin is expensive, but the benefits far out way the minimal price increase.
  11. I can ping NT Comp either by IP or DNS name, and all replies return just fine. I can also get to any other site on the interent. I have flushed DNS on every machine on the network, to no avail. So why did my network stop liking NT Comp ?? Please help!! ThanX in advance...Klark:D

Can't get to NT Comp from home !!?? wtf ??

CUViper, unfortunately, it was every machine in my house/network. So I know it wasn't something to do with my machine, or any single machine on the network. I found out that it was a problem with the new firmware in my modem. When I recieved it from USR, it was version 3.0.5. I recently flashed it to 3.0.6, which is when all my problems started. So needless to say, I went back to the first version, and now I'm typing this from home...WooHoo!! All is good.... Klark...

how do I take off screen saver lock delay?

Cool...Glad you got it working. But I have to ask this: Was it worth all the work to save yourself 2 simple key strokes ?? Though I shouldn't say much, cause I bound that command to one of the hot keys on my keyboard. Now, instead of Windows key + L, I just have to hit 1 little button !!

how do I take off screen saver lock delay?

After hours of deliberation and complex research, we have came up with a rather risky alternative solution to your problem. We developed a highly advanced batch file using state of the art technology only available to the government. During the night while you were asleep, our 8 man highly advanced military strike-force team snuke into your home to install the software. Linked via satellite, the operatives quickly installed the software with help from our software engineers who were stationed at our main headquarters in Stockholm. The operatives then quickly exited the premises before any hostile fire or casulties could occur. Follow these directions very carefully to activate the new script we installed: Hold down your Windows key....then press 'L' Let us know if that will work for you...And I apologize if any of our operatives tracked mud into your house. Oh, and by the way, Sargeant Tallcock, the leader of our strike-force, says you need more toilet paper in your downstairs bathroom
  15. Ok, probably an easy fix to this, but I sure as hell don't know what it is. My local domain is lotl.lan. All of my clients log-in to lotl.lan, or the Netbios name of LOTL. Also, I'm hosting www.lotl.cc with IIS from here, on a second server here within our lan. The primary server is the PDC for lotl.lan....and the second server is our backup DHCP server for lotl.lan, and the webserver for www.lotl.cc. The problem is: No one logged into lotl.lan can see www.lotl.cc, they all come back with 'page cannot be displayed'. But everyone outside of our internal lotl.lan can see the site just fine. Click here to see my current ipconfig /all. The Default Gateway setting that you see in the pic is the IP of my router. 192.168.X.10 is the PDC for lotl.lan. Please help!! I'd like to get working on the site, but it's kinda hard when I can't get there to test it. ThanX in advance... Klark

    defragment

I've used Norton's Speed Disk for a few years, and I love it. It's never given me any problems. The first time I used it, I couldn't believe the difference it made in my resources. Placing the swap/page file at the beginning of the hard disk really makes a huge difference. I would say keep using it...Ecspecially if it's the 2002 version, which is for XP.

    Jedi Knight 2

Ok...been playing that level for you. Which keypad is Lando standing infront of?? ..the one that you first come to in the small room overlooking the ship bay?? Or, the one that is in the cockpit inside the ship?? Cause what you have to do next depends on what keypad he's at, and what he has recently instructed you to do. Let me know...just PM me, so we don't keep bumping this thread back up top. Klark...

Ya I know, that fuel tank/ship port level is rather stupid. Later tonight, I'll run thru it again, and I'll take some notes on what I did. Then I'll just PM you.... Cool?

Can't see my own domain from inside...???

The only reason Im hosting two domains is when we originally set up my network, I didn't own the lotl.cc domain name, and I was sure whether or not I would even be able to use an actual internet name. Besides, Like I really knew any better... I wish there was a way to totally get rid of the lotl.lan domain, but this machine is the PDC, so I can't change anything without reformatting the server....I think So...Is what I'm doing like a big major problem? And also, I haven't even started with the split-brain project....So I'm sure I'll have a smashin' good time with that. By the way, I found a great article on Split-Brain DNS here. It explains the process in great detail, while making it simple to understand....Which is great for someone like myself, who has absolutely no idea what the hell they're doing... I really hope I have my internal DNS server setup correctly, cuz do to my usual bad luck, I'm probably totally screwing up every DNS server in the world 8). Either that, or I'm directing tons of traffic to my internal DNS server because I have one simple IP or DNS record set wrong...

Can't see my own domain from inside...???

Ok...after staying up all night, I realized that I'm a total idiot. I forgot to add the name servers! ;( Clutch, take a look at this pic, and tell me what ya think. How I noticed it was by opening up one of the cached zones, and then seeing what they had. Actually, the cached zone I was looking at was iisanswers.com, and I set it up very similar to that. So do I have it set up the proper way?...or half-a*sed? Also, do I really need the SOA record?...cuz shella is not the actual server for this website, its actually my second server, Dualy, which is the 192.168.0.73. Also, I'm totally unclear as to whether or not I need Dynamic Updates?? I set it to yes, cause thats how you had me set up the lotl.lan zone. Am I gettin' there? ..or still a total dumbsh*t?

Well then, evidently you didn't enable something earlier in the level. Go back, and make sure you didn't miss anything. I've noticed that this game is exactly like all the rest....Nuttin' but a buncha' pre-schoolish puzzles, mixed with some really fun killing:p, some good ol' blood-n-guts, and a completely retarded plot that shows similarity to a 6th graders attempt at a science fiction novel But guess what? ...Somehow I manage to sit at my machine for hours on end, completely engulfed in those retarded plots !!
  22. Unfortunately, I have a question about a modem/router that none of you has ever used before. I know this because I have a friend at my ISP that got me the new USR8550. It was like pulling teeth to get a prototype, but let me tell you, it's bad-a*s so far. The problem is this: I believe you absolutely have to enable it's internal DHCP function to get its NAT to work. Which poses a problem for me. I already have a DHCP server, and I need to keep using it. Also, I need to use its NAT function. So is there a way that I can enable its internal DHCP server, but keep it from giving IPs to any of my clients ?? And please don't say "Assign the clients static", cause that is NOT an option. So far, all I have done is enabled the internal DHCP on the router, and given it a range that only assigns one address: 192.168.0.1 ...But that still doesn't keep a client from grabbing that IP, sooner or later...Or will my 2k Server DHCP take priority ?? Any suggestions?? TanX in advance, Klark...

Problem with NAT and DHCP...in my router

Update: I got the site to work, but only if I enabled DHCP on the router, and let it assign only 1 IP address. Hopefully none of the client machines will grab that one IP. 8) But anyway, you fellow DSL guys might want to check out the USR8550 ...Because so far it's outperformed a Linksys router that I purchased. If you have any questions about it, feel free to email me.

    Problems w/ ZoneAlarm & 2-PC LAN

I know what ya mean. My girl is constantly asking to do her Excel and Power Point homework on my personal machine. I simply 'try' to ask her "Are you out of your friggin' mind?!!" But she usually replies with "Your computer is so much faster than that other POS in the corner, so it takes twice as long to do my homework !!" She once asked to do her homework on my 2k Advancer Server...Can you believe the nerve?!! I could only imagine how that would turn out: ""My Excel homework locked up, so I just flipped the power button, and when it came back on, there's a big blue screen with a bunch of white words at the top!!" 8) 8) 8) It's not easy telling your girl that her computer is the dusty, slow-a*s PII450 in the corner:D

    Wierd grey screen problem

Your problems sounds VERY similar to a problem I had recently. I ended up finding out it was a spyware problem. Go here and download Ad-aware. Install it and let it scan your drives. You'll probably be surprised at all the stuff it finds, ecspecially if you've installed any file sharing programs like Kazaa or Audio Galaxy. Also, look in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs for b3d Projector. If you have installed Kazaa, b3d Projector is surely in there. It's well known spyware that Kazaa has caught lots of sh*t about. Uninstall it...quickly. One of the items Ad-aware found was a .dll inside my system32 folder, and another called Search Lop, which plants itself in a bitmap on your desktop without you knowing about it. Those two together is what was causing me the similar problem to yours. I could be way off from your specific problem but it's worth a shot...Good luck
