Hi there, A friend of mine has asked me to build a server for a local business. When I asked him what he wants it for he basically said a massive storage space to store files from users (about five users). At first I thought about a SAN but then considered these as being too expensive. I, therefore, think the best option is to build a system with massive storage capability. This is where I need your help.. can you give me some ideas of what components I should include? The foremost components I were thinking of were 4 x 250GB SATA hard drives in RAID mode... anything else?? Thanks. Mak

Hi Any *particular* ones you could recommend? Thanks. Mak

Hi So if I have 4 x 250GB SATA drives, I will be left with 750GB as the other will be used as a parity disk? Am I right there? Secondly, which controller would recommend for this, as to my knowledge, no on-board controller support RAID 5? Thanks. Mak

Hi I'm not very au fait with RAID so could you please explain how 4 x 250GB would not give 1TB (in RAID 0 for example)? Backups will be kept on CD anyway but this is for immediate access.. hence I am considering RAID 5.. this would leave 750GB? Do you know any motherboards that support 4 x SATA drives in RAID 5 mode or would I need a seperate controller? Either way.. can you recommend a motherboard/controller? Thanks. Mak

Hi Software RAID? I have never heard of that before.. could you elaborate a bit about it please? Thanks. Mak
-
Hi The thing is that it doesn't support SATA? Thanks. Mak

Hi That sounds interesting.. any site you can point me to for a review or more info? Secondly, in the UK P4P800 deluxe.. is this a good board? It has RAID on board but only ARA-133 Thanks. Mak

Hi So with RAID 5 what would that 250GB be used for? Thanks. Mak

Hi The firm is a printers and they produce a lot of Photoshop work which is then archived on to CD. It is, often, hundreds of MB (perhaps not a full CD) but nevertheless, there are hundreds of CDs they want on this archive machine to be readily available as clients often come back months later requesting re-prints. The reason I have chosen SATA is firstly the cheaper cost. Secondly, it will not really be used as a 'server' as such.. just a large mass of storage. Hence, I don't really need the solid SCSI set-up (considering the inflated cost). If I do go with 4 x SATA in RAID.. what modes and what motherboards etc would everyone suggest? Thanks. Mak

Hi I recently followed a guide on the Net to get SP1 installed on to my Windows XP. That works great. I then came across a pre-integrated SP1 build and obtained a serial for it to try it out. It worked, installed etc. However, when trying Windows Update, it says the key is not valid. Is there any way I can get around the above and have the integrated SP1 build work with Windows Update or am I going to have to do it the long way around each time by up[censored] it to SP1? Thanks. Mak

Hi No worries, got it sorted now Thanks. Mak

Hi Not really a fix is it? More like a work around! Mak

Hi Tried logging into Hotmail the other day and some other MSN sites and it states that I am using an old browser and I must update. The only thing I have done is upgrade to SP1 and when I click 'About' it states IE6 SP1. Any ideas?? Thanks. Mak

Hi It was actually 'cos I was running Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. When I disable it, it works fine. Any ideas on how to correct this? Also, any ideas on whether you think this is a good firewall or not? It doesn't seem to have the ability to block specific ports as such. Thanks. Mak -
Domains without 'www' preceeding them don't work??
mak-uk posted a topic in Everything New Technology
Hi I'm not sure why but on Win XP, domains without the preceeding 'www', eg. hotmail.com don't work. I have to type them in full: www.hotmail.com. If I don't type it in a full, I get a pop-up box asking for my username/password and no matter what I type in it gives me a HTTP 500 Internal Server Error: The page cannot be displayed. Any ideas? Thanks. Mak -

Hi DS3Circuit.. I tried what you said but IISHelp was already in existence. I then deleted it and followed your instructions but to no avail. Now it says: http://hotmail.com/localstart.asp You are not authorized to view this page You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied. Any ideas? Thanks. Mak -
Domains without 'www' preceeding them don't work??
mak-uk replied to mak-uk's topic in Everything New Technology
Hi I tried that and when I type in 'http://hotmail.com in the browser, it changes to: http://hotmail.com/localstart.asp and I get the following message: error '8002801c' Error accessing the OLE registry. /iisHelp/common/500-100.asp, line 17 So I think it must be something to do with IIS. Any ideas? Thanks. Mak -

Hi I just did a fresh install of XP on drive D. Then I realise that 98SE on C needed cleaning out so I did the same with 98SE. Now my boot menu has disappeared! How do I get it back? Thanks. Mak.

Hi How do I go about that? I won't have to resintall anything will I? (As I have just spent ages up[censored] it using windowsupdate). Thanks. Mak.

Hi MY IIS 5.1 (on XP) has been working fine for ages. However, a few months ago, it stopped starting automatically and each time I rebooted, I had to start it manually. Anyway, it still worked fine. Today, I tried starting it and I got the following error message: "Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred." What exactly does that mean?! I have tried restarting the system and it still says the same thing. Now, however, it has a red 'error' icon next to the 'Local Host (Stopped)' part. (I only use it on the localhost for some basic PHP development). Since, I have had a look in the Event Viewer under System messages and I can see the following error under the source of 'W3SVC': ---- The service could not bind instance 1. The data is the error code. For additional information specific to this message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at: http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. ---- Any ideas? Thanks. Mak.

Hi I am trying to slip-stream SP1 into Office XP, however, when I run setup /a as instructed, I get a message along the lines that administrative install cannot be run from there but needs to be run from an original source. Any ideas? Thanks. Mak.
-
Hi Thanks.. but the first two are about actual installations.. I haven't even gotten that far; and the latter link is about When You Try to Run Administrative Installation of Converter Pack (Q280561).. which I don't need to. I am just wondering why a simple admin install wont work with "setup /a" Thanks. Mak.

Hi I have a laptop and a desktop PC which are networked using a standard 100MB RJ45 cross-over cable. Suppose I want to store a copy of 'My Documents' on both machines. If I work on one machine and the files are updated, I would like the updated on the second machine when I connect them up. I have gotten this work in a simplex manner (ie. one way) using 'offline folders'. However, I want it to work both ways for either machine. How do I do that? I have looked into Briefcase but it seems confusing. Thanks. Mak.
