Looking for some apps...

Recommended Posts

I haven't checked McAfee's corp site yet, but I was wondering what you guys recommend for AV scanners in Linux, along with any fav MP3 players.

Dunno about virus checkers (although given that theres only a handful of Linux-specific virii out there theres currently no real need) but as far as MP3 players go XMMS is probably a good bet. Most distros install it, look under Multimedia in the "Start" Menu of the Desktop Environment/Window Manager you're using.

I just installed f-prot, have used mcafee also. Don't know how good they are, but I'm planning to use it as e-mail scanner. It found the w32-klez virus in one of my mails, so I think they both work, f-prot has a script to update the virus-definitions automatically, well I haven't really tested it, but it's free for home use.

The standard player of KDE, noatun, works just fine for me. Also has winamp skin support now..

There are a number of anti-virus apps out there. However, most are for checking email attachments. I did see one that appeared to be stand alone. I believe it was called "AnitVir". Since I have not used any of these apps I am not able to provide any information other than they exist. Take a run over to freshmeat.net and search for "virus".

The idea that because there only seems to be a "handful" of viruses out for *nix there's no reason to run an AV product is a fairly dangerous notion. If I see anything I'll post it.

You might want to check www.ravantivirus.com for a very good suite of virus scanners. XMMS does the job, supports skins what do u need more? Did anyone try the "write-to-disk" plugin while listening to a Shoutcast stream? smile

For a commercial solution, check out "Vexira Antivirus for Linux": http://www.centralcommand.com/linux_workstation.html For a free solution, check out http://clamav.elektrapro.com/ (it's still in an early stage but it's good that it's based on Open Antivirus). Open Antivirus themselves have several projects including Java-based anti-virus toolkits which you can find at: http://www.openantivirus.org/projects.php Haven't tried any of these out but if you do, tell us what your impressions are.
