Weird network problems.

Recommended Posts

Lo there,

I have 3 machines at home all running Win2000 which are networked together.

I'm using standard BNC on every machine.

The network was put together ages and ages ago when I ran win95, and as all the cables are in the walls I don't really want to start changing to something else.

1st things 1st, installed on each machine is the following.

Client for Microsnot networks

TCP/IP

File and Printer sharing for Ms Networks.

I'm using the 10.0.0.x ip set for each machine.

I can see all computers on the network from each other machine. Network neighbourhood shows them all up etc etc.

The problem I have is when I map a network drive from one machine eg: \\machine_name\c$

It maps perfectly but, if i leave it for a wihle then goto My_Computer to access it again it shows a big red cross through it as though its lost the mapping.

Simply double clicking on it opens access again and the red cross vanishes. Question is why is that red X appearing after a while. I'v timed it and its not a fixed time thing its quite random.

While its a simple problem its driving me mad.

Anyone got an suggestions?

TIA

Dave

That just indicates that it's not actually connected to the remote computer, as it hasn't used any of the resources in a while. It's perfectly normal...
