evil Homer 0 Posted December 3, 2000 Hi all.... I don't usually have any problems with Windows 2000... but this one is severely bugging me... I have a Win98se Laptop and another PC downstairs with Windows ME, as well as my Win2k box. On my Win2k box I have ICS enabled for my 24-7 Freecall dialup modem connection. Now, up until around October, everything was working fine, I could use my laptop downstairs and surf the web. Now, I can't. I have checked all the configurations and there is nothing visibly wrong, yet my laptop and my other PC cannot access the internet. This what the machines have installed and set to: Win2k box - IP address 192.168.0.1 (This is what ICS sets it to) Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DNS Server Address is blank. (This has all been configured via ICS) Win98 Laptop - IP address (set to automatic ***ign) Subnet Mask (Also set to automatic ***ign) DNS Server address (Blank) (Same goes for the Windows ME machine) This how it was all setup before. The two machines can see each other over Microsoft Network client, and can ping each other (Laptop is ***igned IP 192.168.0.6) But, the laptop cannot access anything on the net, even when the Internet settings are defaulted to connect via LAN. I don't particularly want to reinstall 2000, and I have reinstalled all the network protocols and checked the services are starting correctly.... System config of my Win2k box: AMD Athlon 800 (not o/c) Asus K7V m/board 320Mb RAM Windows 2000 Build 2195 with SP1 3com 10/100 NIC U.S. Robotics 56k Sportster Flash Guillemot Geforce 2 GTS SB Live Adaptec 2940CD SCSI card Any help would be appreciated as I am going f*cking mad with this!! evil Homer [This message has been edited by evil Homer (edited 03 December 2000).] [This message has been edited by evil Homer (edited 03 December 2000).] Share this post Link to post
OLEerror 0 Posted December 6, 2000 Is it only the laptop that is having problems? Or is the ME machine also unable to connect? If it is just the laptop, that is most likely where your problem is. If you are using Internet Explorer, try setting the connectio properties again. If that doesn't work, try running a repair on it. Share this post Link to post
evil Homer 0 Posted December 6, 2000 Its not the laptop, as my parents were using the ME machine and told me of the problem, I just confirmed things with my laptop. Homer Share this post Link to post
evil Homer 0 Posted December 6, 2000 Hmmm, for some reason, with no interference from me, its now working.... And I am even more completly dumbfounded Homer Share this post Link to post
OLEerror 0 Posted December 7, 2000 One of the network cards may have been broadcasting. This is usually corrected when the computer is shutdown. Or it can correct itself over time. Share this post Link to post
Guest Posted December 8, 2000 This probably wont help, but it's just an experience I had with ICS. Regular ole ICS does not work for me. It's never worked. Well, let me rephrase that. I can ping any other ip address on my network.. so it DOES enable routing between the two NICs... but I could never get to the internet through ICS. What DOES work for me (and you may be out of luck) is using Win2k Server, enabling Routing and Remote Access using NAT. This works flawlessly and has many more customizable settings than just "on" and "off" like ICS. Perhaps you would do well do download a routing package... other than that I don't know what to tell ya. There's always disabling it, then re-enabling it. I'm not sure about this one but heregoes... sometimes ISPs will have hardware in place that make it certain that only one computer is using the internet connection... however that usually is true only of IP addresses. Anyways.. just some insight. ------------------ ********************************************** ---Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.--- ********************************************** Pentium II 450@504 4.5X112 256MB PC100 SDRAM Diamond Viper V770 Ultra Sound Blaster Live!
