Daniel Holbach announces a couple hangouts for teams who have

questions about running Ubuntu Global Jam events coming up on

Wednesday August 27th. The two hangouts are going to be at:

Ben Howard announces archive-triggered (rather than time-based) Ubuntu

Cloud image builds in an effort to build images when they are needed,

like in the midst the recent Heartbleed vulnerability, and not waste

resources when a build is unnecessary. Ben writes: "Now, instead of

building every day at 00:30 UTC, the build starts when the archive has

been updated and the packages in the prior cloud image build is older

than the archive version."

On August 21st Canonical and VMWare announcemed that "certified Ubuntu

LTS images are available on VMware vCloud® Air, an enterprise-grade

cloud platform offering customers performance, reliability, and

security for their cloud infrastructures." The article goes on to

discuss benefits for existing customers and also notes that some

configurations allow a company "to use its existing VMware ESXi

hypervisors as a foundation for running OpenStack."

=== VMware Hybrid Now Available In Ubuntu Flavors ===

 

Ben Kepes of Forbes reports on the recent news that Canonical and

VMware are officially certifying Ubuntu on VMWare's vCloud Air

(formerly vCHS). He writes: "This announcement is good for VMware

(another bunch of customers they can target) and it's good for

Canonical (they get to stamp "Ubuntu Inside" on another enterprise

cloud product). But most of all it's good for those organizations that

already run applications on top of Ubuntu."

the Ubuntu MATE Remix team regarding their efforts to become an

Ubuntu Technical Board is in 'support of Ubuntu MATE' and that a few

Bryan Lunduke of Network World does a review of Unity. In the

beginning of the article he acknowledges his discomfort and dislike

for Unity and does a deep dive into some of the features and issues he

has with it. While he concludes that it "could be much better" he also

writes "I actually didn't find anything in Unity that would prevent me

from enjoyably using my Linux-powered PC. It worked, and it has been

quite reliable. In fact, if Unity were the only Desktop Environment

available for Linux... I would use it quite happily."

=== Munich Council Say Talk of LiMux Demise Is Greatly Exaggerated ===

 

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! shares comments from a Munich city

council spokesman who has "attempted to clarify the reasons behind its

plan to re-examine the role of open-source software in local

government IT systems" and concludes that it's too early to say

whether a switch away from Linux is likely for Munich.

Jan Willem Aldershoff of Myce writes about Goobuntu, an operating

system that is combination of security enhancements and Google's own

applications and their "other" OS of choice. The OS is based on the
