bizarre modem problem - please help!

Recommended Posts

I have installed the 56k voice internal PCI modem into my Windows 2000 system. The modem was successfully recognised and the drivers which were supplied were loaded.

The modem is able to dial out. However the first 2 times I tried to dial my ISP it connected with reported rates of 28.8bps and 50.6bps. On both occasions the modem was unable to send or receive any data, it just sat doing nothing. Subsequent attempts to connect stalled at the "verifying username and password" stage of connection. My details have not been changed as I was previously able to connect with a sportster x2 flash upgraded to v.90 under NT4 and I have simply upgraded to Win 2000.

Using hyperterminal I was able to dial out using the PCI modem again, however about 5 seconds after connecting to a remote number it would autiomatically disconnect. Hyperterminal would display the message "busy". The "disconnect if idle" option is not selected in modem properties.

The modem seemed to install on COM3 and IRQ9 (which is shared with several other devices thanks to ACPI) but there is no conflict report. I manually changed the modem properties to COM2 but this made no difference. COM2 was not displayed as installed under Device Manager / Ports.

I am using the supplied cable and adapter to connect to my analogue phone line. The line is obviouly good enough to support a 3com modem as it was connecting every time without problems using my old sportster under NT4.

Do you have any advice?

OK firt of all, IRQ 9 is used by many diffrent stuff, such as Sound card, SCSI card, etc.

This could be your problem. My SCSI card had serious probs under win 98, It shared IRQ 9 with the sound card, so it was disabled due to conflict, but if I disabled it manually before quitting win 98 and then manualy enabled it after startup, it worked just fine.

Maby you should try to change the IRQ. This isn't always easy, you have to uninstall the modem and check the box for preset IRQ so that the modem wont choose that IRQ automatically.

Another thing, is that I had the same modem and I had tons of trouble with it, so I went out and bought myself a USB modem, works great!

I say return the modem and get another one... Internal modems usually suck.

Sorry to say so, but i know, iv'e been there.

Plus, I *believe* winmodems cannot use COM1 or 2 due to the software interface, and thus create their own COM port (usually 3,4,5). I had a USR Winmodem a long time ago, and it always created a COM3 to work on. If I use modems now, I just get externals (Courier, V.Everything, etc).

Moray, I had the exact same problem a while ago. It had nothing to do with my modem (model listed below), but actually a setting that my ISP uses. To get around this, goto the properties of you connection, click Networking, and uncheck Enable LCP extensions & Negotiate multi-link for single link connections. Click OK and the try and redial. I was stumped on this for AGES, but this was all I had to do to get the connection active.

If this doesn't help you out, then I have no idea sorry. I've seen it fix many connections of friends of mine on various ISP's, so you 'should' get a possitive result

Good luck

EKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haven't seen you here in awhile, it's coming up on Newbie time like last year when they released Win2k, this time it'll be with WinXP, *sigh* Remember the people whining about the Detonator drivers?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I am going to try Ekstreme's tips - I have noticed that when connecting to the ISP through the COM port in hyperterminal, after successfully logging on, the screen fills up with a repeating pattern of ASCII characters. Inside this mess of junk is the expression MULTI-LINK, which leads me to think that it might have something to do with that setting. I disabled the "negotiate multi-link" tickbox, but didn't touch the "Enable LCP extensions" box.

If this sorts out the problem I'll be so happy as I am just about at the point of returning the modem.

Re - the port settings. As clutch said, the modem sets itself to COM3 but the OS installs only COM1 - do I have to set the modem manually to COM1 or should I just accept that COM3 and COM1 are the same thing?

COM3 is *supposed* to be a redirector for COM1 resources. The software/drivers for the modem should configure the OS for this, but it can still be an issue. If that was the way it installed, I would just leave it for the moment and try the other option you are referring to (keep it simple for troubleshooting purposes).

Unfortunately, disabling multi-link and LCP didn't make any difference

Here's an extract from the modem log showing what happened. The first time I try to connect it seems to work, but only connect at 28.8k - nothing happens after that. When I disconnect and then try to reconnect, it will stall at the "authenticating password" stage.

After that monster post (sorry) you will be glad to know that I have finally sorted out my mystery problem. I still have no idea what was wrong.

I tweaked everything I possibly could 9steady...) and in the end took the last resort - reformated and reinstalled Win2000.

Modem now dials up and transmits data without problems except it seems to occasionally connect at 28.8k which it never did before.

Anyway, I am happy so smile for me!!
