NT and 2K question

I know I could pass for a newbie, which

currently I am, but I'm having a little

problem: I was wondering if I could install

a copy of NT Server on a machine which already has 2K Professional. I'd need that

for work and that would be great! (I scream

thinking of all the configs to redo)...

And speaking of that, will I have to reconfig

the machine anyway?

The problem you are going to run into is that NT 4 cannot read NTFS 5 before service pack 4 is applied. So the installation will probably fail. If you make the drive or partition you plan on installing NT 4 Server to the active partition, it should work though. You'll just need to modify the BOOT.INI.

I'll install NT, boot from there, apply the

SPs, and then it should be all ok, right?

You'd be far better off starting from scratch and installing NT4 (with at least SP4 applied) before installing W2K to another partition. Microsoft specifically warns about doing dual booting with NT4 and W2K on anything but a temporary basis.

 

If you post the exact partition scheme you have, and what you plan, someone can try to help you figure out if it will work. You must remember that an NT4 boot partition must be contained entirely within the first 7.8 gigs (1023 cylinders) of the first hard drive on the system.

Hey you can also run it with VMWare its an emulator or virtual disk you can run other OS'es inside of your running one(dont have to restart so you can select NT 4 off boot menu). It works much better then a NT/2K dual boot setup. The only thing I dont like about it is you have to dedicate memory to it.Here is the website for you in case you are interested. There is a crack available for it but, I would support the writers of it and pay for it. Hope this helps you... if you have any questions about configuration I can help as I run it.

VMware is okay, but it requires some hefty resources to run well, so you'll probably have to increase the ram a bit.

Ok, new plan now: I'll completely remove 2k,

so one more newbie question: is ok if I

BIOS-format the disk, ripartition it and then

install NT? Or is it possible to just apply

NT over the old partition? And moreover,

where can I find the tools to do that? I've

received the machine as a "legacy", and still

can't find all the diskettes my precursor

used. Should I create a "system disk" with

another NT Server to boot the machine?

remove all partitions and repartition your hard drive.
