Brats 0 Posted March 22, 2001 Hmm this is the first time Ive dabbled with Win2K I have been trying to do an upgrade as thats the software ive got Ive actually got an full Win2K upgrade pool, As Im about to upgrade the comps at work. Ive been trying to do mine first but Im not sure if my comps just too old or there is a workaround each time I get to the end of the upgrade it tells me that my mobo and video card are incompatable. and refuses to finish the install I even tried a fresh install as you get the option ( of having a second OS ) and if I try and load the Win2K it just goes blank after the "loading Win2k" window. My machine at homes a tad old but I didnt think it was that bad GA5AA Diamond viper 770 32mb 128mb ram AMD K62 333 3DNow Any ideas would be appreciated guys Cheers Tony Share this post Link to post
maxg 0 Posted March 22, 2001 I don't know what your problem is, but it works fine here: GA5AX K6-2/300 3Dnow! 192 Meg RAM ATI Rage Fury AGP 32 Meg Share this post Link to post
Brian Frank 0 Posted March 23, 2001 8) It seem that Gigabyte boards have problems with the K6 line, video cards, and the ALi chipset. That GA-5AX is the first one of those boards that someone hasnt complained about...yet. I hope Gigabyte doesnt make boards that have problems like that. Also, problems seem to be related to not enough voltage to the AGP slot, and Ive seen crappy performance from a PCI card too. It could be that the Viper is just not going to work. I looked at that particular board the GA-5AA,and being its based on the ALi chipset and has AGP, I'll bet thats a good part of your problem right there. So far the only complaints with gigabyte boards seem to be older ones with AGP and ALi chipsets combined with the K6 cpu's. If you plan on running Win2k on computers like that, it would be better to spend money on a whole new fleet of computers. If you truly intend to run Win2k on your home computer, buy a new one. Those ALi/Gigabyte boards arent worth fooling with. Give it to someone else who will surf the net with it. yakkob 0 Posted March 23, 2001 You'll be lucky ! I had 3 of them GA-5AX with a K6 3/450 pieces of shite, and in the end I gave it to someone else afetr 3 months of pissing about. Surf the net ! ???? LOL, he had trouble with the Ali Agp using a Creative Banshee PCI and surfing the net, it would just hang. So he had to drop back his bios of the banshee, and drop back the ali agp driver to get it working.. BTW, this is only a shortterm fix, and he frequently has to reinstall every 4 weeks or so. Another thing, to install Win98se on a GA-5AX I had to disable internal cache in the bios. Don't know if its the same for W2k, but it just might help you. You can re-enable it after the install has finished (which takes forever without it enabled :[ ). But..basically, be prepared for a world of hurt and much p.issing about with that board.
