Whistler Install Problems.......

Recommended Posts

Well, I am severly miffed frown

System Specs:

Gigabyte GA-5AA Motherboard (Latest BIOS (5AA.F6 BIOS)).

AMD K6-2 450Mhz

128Mb SD-RAM PC100

Maxtor 13GB UDMA/66 HDD.

ATi Rage Fury MAXX

I have Windows Whistler 2257. I run the install and it gets uup to the point where it wants to check my hardware and install drivers, it gets to just over half way and then BSOD's. It says that My BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant and that to install Whistler it needs to be frown

It recommends checkinging the README.TXT for workarounds (Which I CANT find for love nor money), Or to visit http://www.hardware-update.net (or was it .com....) and check for the latest BIOS to fix it.

I am running the latest BIOS and no-matter what I try, it wont install. I have tried:

- Deleting ACPI.sys from C:\Windows\System32\Drivers (Failed to boot)

- Deleting ACPI.inf from C:\Windows\INF (Got to the same point in detecing hardware, BSODed with same message)

- Disabling Power Management in the BIOS (Got to the same point in detecing hardware, BSODed with same message)

Does anyone have ANY ideas, Im really upset that I cant install this, I have been trying all the BETA software since Win98 and I REALLY wanna try this.

I think the Readme.txt will hopefully help.. Anyone out there got this?

Thankx in advance

Have you tried pressing F5 during install at the point where it says press F6 to specify additional drivers?

In windows 2000 it then gives you a menu to select the type of computer you should try picking Standard PC instead of ACPI PC.

A friend of mine has whistler and the installer seemed very simmilar so i suspect it should have that option still.

I had a Gigabyte GA-5AA (got an Abit KT7-Raid and a Duron 600), I Wasnt too impressed with the Gigabyte BIOS`s myself, I thought 5AA.F3 was the latest Bios version.

From my use of the GA-5AA Bios version 1.3 seems to be the best id recomend you try that. you do not get ACPI mode using that either.

are you trying to install whistler from within windows?? Ive talked to people with problems trying to do that. Best way is to make a bootable CD using one of the many FAQs on doing it (search for bootable 2k cd or some**** on here and you will find a guide), and install from a CD boot. I do that with all my whistler installs and they work fine.

THANK YOU!!! w00t!! That got me passed that bit in the detecting hardware bit... Now I have a new problem....

During the detecting hardware sequence, the screen blanks and comes back, however, after it comes back the whole PC freezes frown

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix that?

You guys have been great so far, and if I cen get this working, you will all be entitled to getting the latest builds as and when I get them smile

are you overclocking?

try pulling unessential hardware piece by piece before installing. sometimes one piece of hardware will cause the whole shebang to die during installation. if you succeed in installing then, after it's done pop the hardware back in and let Whistler detect 'n' install.

You have a relativley similar setup to what i had when i used that motherboard, the only extra things i could really suggest trying would be the earlier bios version 1.3 and trying a diffrent graphics card ideally a PCI one or AGP with no more than 8mb.

That motherboard does seem to have problems with not being able to supply enough power to AGP.

Hmmm, The ATI Maxx card is not supported in Windows 2000 I think. You can use the Rage Pro drivers for 2D (I think....) but it's highly unstable.
