sharky 0 Posted November 19, 2000 It's 2296 here and yes it's great, but there is one thing for sure that 128 mb ram is not enough, at fresh boot there is only 26 mb physical ram free. I tried 2dmark2000, it results good, near to 9x and far better than 2000 but while testing my ibm dta-100 drive works like crazy, never seen it like that before, and it waits a while passing between tests. As I guess this is bc physical ram isn't enough and uses swap more... The good thing is ram pricez are going down... Share this post Link to post
Lord-Data 0 Posted November 19, 2000 hehe, youd almost think MS are manipulating the ram prices.. and god knows they could.. would make sence eh, get PCs ladend up with ram, increase the standard threshold on a gamers pc, then release the new OS that happily chews it up Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted November 19, 2000 Yep, that could easily write an app that chews up however much ram they choose and then hide it in a service somewhere. Share this post Link to post
sharky 0 Posted November 19, 2000 LoL , I never thought about it but yes it may be true, microsoft has the power to control ram pricez or affect them. Btw , I was using 7.17 nvidia drivers, now I switched back to 6.47 w2k drivers and wawwww yeah still some ram problem but score is great, 7718 3dmark2000 default test. This is perfect. I think after nvidia puts out a great directx 8.0 drivers score will improve more.. I feel very happy today guyz, bc today is the day I really feel that I'm using the right os.... jdulmage 0 Posted November 19, 2000 well, I have 196 MB RAM, at fresh boot, I have 165 MB left. So it all depends on what system. Share this post Link to post
Lord-Data 0 Posted November 19, 2000 er, thatd be, .. um.. 192 meg yes? tis what iv got. with default services (havnt bothered to tweak yet) with whistler professional a my bare set up statup apps, 100 meg of ram is being consumed. but given the executive paging, theres more than 92 meg physical free. after 'net connection and iv loaded up 2 mircs, a few IE's, outlook, icq, etc etc etc, everythign is using around 150 meg ram. not too bad really. about 20-30 meg over what win2k did at the same stages. sharky 0 Posted November 19, 2000 depends on installiation??.... yes when I fresh boot there is 125 icons loaded at my taskbar.... lololololololol Comon man, how can you say that it only uses 31 mb physical ram, this is impossible. I have only loaded icq at boot, that's all and only left 26 mb of 128 mb physical ram Share this post Link to post
jdulmage 0 Posted November 20, 2000 trust me, it consumes very little RAM on my system. Maybe it's because I have 8 years of troubleshooting and tweaking under my belt. I love when people have problems that I never have, it's funny. Just end it, my system is running fine with it, so why should I care? My system: Athlon 550 Mhz 192 MB RAM (not 196, lol) 16 MB RivaTNT and this was when I was running Whistler Personal. jdulmage 0 Posted November 20, 2000 ahhhh, I see what you mean now. May want to think about shutting off some of those svchost.exe that are running, there should only be one of them running anyways, must be a bug or something. Anyhow, disable them. Cause on fresh boot, i'm using 78 MB of my RAM already, when I turn those svchost.exe files off, I have lots of RAM left. There is where the confusion came into effect Share this post Link to post
jdulmage 0 Posted November 20, 2000 ok, I got an error when trying to shut them off, I used to be able to, now I can't. I don't think it'll normally take up that much RAM when it's a finished product, it has something to do with the dupe of svchost.exe Share this post Link to post
Down8 0 Posted November 20, 2000 I've always had at least 2 svchost.exe's running, usually 3-4, and this is in Win2K. -bZj Share this post Link to post
jdulmage 0 Posted November 20, 2000 no, i'm talking like upwards of 10 to 12 of them, those shouldn't be there at all, so don't worry, they will most likely be taken out. Cause I had a bunch, about 11, using 2 MB of RAM each, and the 12th one using 10 MB. There should only be one or two Share this post Link to post
Lord-Data 0 Posted November 20, 2000 one trick i just learnt, on the cd, in Support/Tools, is a program called tlist, run it from the command prompt as tlist -s. and it will show you what services are running under each SVCHost, matched with its PID. find the big ones in task manager, check em in tlist, and see if you really need that particular service. pr-man 1 Posted November 20, 2000 Yeah I have 128 megs of ram and whistler 2296 pro and after fresh boot im left with about 26 megs also hmm dont know why. My problem is that I cannot get any 3d accelleration with my Matrox g450 32 meg. Im using the latest win2k pro drivers which work perfect in win2k pro but give me no 3d acceleration under 2296. any ideas? ------------------ Celeron II 566@875 on a Abit BH6 Rev 1.01, 128 Pc100, Matrox G450 32 DH, SBlive Value, Supra Express 56i ISA, Win98FE Share this post Link to post
jdulmage 0 Posted November 21, 2000 yeah, don't use those drivers, use GLsetup or something. and he is right about the tlist thing, I tried it, freed things up well, it only uses 30 MB of RAM now, rather than 78 MB, like it was....much better Share this post Link to post
Lord-Data 0 Posted November 21, 2000 GLSetup has a win2k version now? mm. interesting. might have to go hunt that down. and yea, tlist is useful eh ;P Share this post Link to post
Lord-Data 0 Posted November 24, 2000 ehe actualy now that i have a geforce, and not a 3dfx card, i dont need to worry about glsetup. when q3 first came out it woulda been useful, but now, i dont need it Share this post Link to post
