Jose Antonio Rey announces Ubuntu's participation in Google Code-In

2015, which is an annual open source competition hosted by Google. He

writes that students 13-17 years of age can register, and compete

against others to complete various tasks created by mentors. The

contest will run until January 25, 2016.

Rafael Laguna writes that Box is the default theme (icons, controls,

backgrounds..) for Lubuntu, but some applications don't follow XDG

specs for their buttons and graphics. Rafael feels FileZilla is a

must-have app so he writes how to use his Lubuntu matching theme.

Femma looks back at the Helsinki SDK Sprint which aimed to have

designers and engineers work together on tools and components. She

=== Jono Bacon: Why You Should Go To UbuCon in Los Angeles in January ===

 

Jono Bacon tells us why 21st-22nd January are important dates: it's

when the UbuCon Summit happens, in Pasadena California. He shares that

it's an event aimed at users, developers, artists, educators, business

people and more with a goal to share ideas, have fun with Ubuntu and

build relationships. Jono lists many speakers, highlighting that

networking and the social side is the most valuable, and also that

entrance is free.

Will Cooke reminds us that Unity 7 scopes, which were introduced with

12.10, added results from online searches to the dash home screen. He

says that in Unity 8 the scopes concept has evolved; this 'evolution'

cannot be added to Unity 7 so the decision has been made to gracefully

retire some aspects of the online search features in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Thibaut Rouffineau writes about UAVIA's first 100% remotely controlled

drones, which are powered by Ubuntu. Thibaut says, "Drones are

currently complex to handle as the operator has to physically move to

the site of interest to perform an inspection." This makes this easier

by allowing for remote control of the drones.

=== Ubuntu Touch OTA-8.5 to Land Early Next Week, OTA-9 Gets a Huge

Unity 8 Update ===

 

Marius Nestor, writing for Softpedia, shares the news that the Ubuntu

Touch developers will shortly release an OTA-8.5 hotfix update, and

that OTA-9 should arrive on January 20, 2016. He describes OTA-9 as

being a big Unity 8 update with lots of convergence features, and adds

that some missing language packs have been added.
