Probs whith Whistler!!!

Recommended Posts

OK So I installed Whistler/Windows XP (whatever), yesterday.

First of all it didn't support my USB modem (ComeOne light 56k) That's pretty bad considering it's USB and was released last year.

Second, I have an external SCSI HD and windows usually detects it as "movable device" and I always have to change it. BUT Whistler/XP didn't. Althoug, the "explorer" program doesn't recognize the drive. It's very strange... This is how the prob. appears:

When i brows throu my drives in "explorer" it doesn't show at all. So I enter the "device manager" to check the status in there. Bingo, there's the HD and it says "working properly". (but it's not!, or so I thought...). Opening up "Winamp", i enter a "dir" from the lost HD. Hmmm I think, this is odd?!?!?. I tried, to play a song from it and it worked.

Back in the "explorer" program i press "refresh" to see if it will appear. But Noooo. Then i tried typing the drive letter in the brows list. Bingo it appears! BUT!: No icon and no volume lable, and as i check properties from right click menu it says that the FS is RAW, (I later converted from FAT32 to NTFS but still the same prob) no volume lable here either, and nothing can be changed.

SO!, by browsing and typing in D: i can access the HD, and it works fine and all, but it's very disturbing and it isn't right.

Also in"explorer" some "dirs" and files does not have an icon.

Somebody had a similar prob? Or know how to fix it? By the way its BETA 2 build 2041 (Not to sure bout the build but its build 20XX anyway)

Thanx for the support with Win2k sofar guys!

1) Manufacturer is responsible for supplying MS with the drivers for your modem, so if it isn't supported, blame your manufacturer (I know that's a fact)

2) you may have to set up certain drivers for your hard drive, who knows, yet again a driver issue, see #1

3) it's impossible that you are using 2041, when Win2k was 2195. It's impossible that your using beta 2 approx 2 weeks before it's released. So, your most likely using 2410.

I really don't even know what else to say, I am just ranting on, everyone else can anti-XP there way into the future (lamers), so i'll pro-XP back at you all. And there ain't a damn thing you can do about it.

This really has nothing to do with the guys question JD. He didn't say anything bad about YOUR Whistler. ;(

", (I later converted from FAT32 to NTFS but"

Converting from FAT32 to NTFS (using the Convert X: /FS:NTFS) changes the cluster size to 512b which is very bad if you perform disk intensive stuff. Mabye the drive is messed up. I would move all the stuff off of the drive and delete the partition and reformat. Use the Disk Manager in NT.
