[SCALE 14X] Shifting gears on Friday at SCALE

Recommended Posts

SCALE 14X got off to a great start on Thursday, but it shifts gears on

Friday. On Friday, SCALE 14X starts off with:

CORY DOCTOROW KEYNOTE: Science fiction writer and digital rights

warrior Cory Doctorow kicks off SCALE 14X Friday with his keynote,

“No Matter Who's Winning the War on General Purpose Computing,

You're Losing†at 9 a.m., in Ballroom DE. The co-editor of Boing

Boing (boingboing.net) works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation

and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group.

LEGAL EAGLES IN SCALE'S LEGAL TRAINING PROGRAM: Because Open Source

has been making profound strides inside and outside the tech realm,

attorneys need to stay ahead of the curve. SCALE provides a vehicle

for this in its first Open Source Legal Training program, designed to

provide legal education to practicing attorneys and law students who

seek education on open source legal issues. The Southern California

Linux Expo is a Bar Accredited CLE Activity Provider, making this

course approved for 5.75 hours MCLE California General credit. The

program requires separate registration here –

https://reg.socallinuxexpo.org/reg6/

– and more information can be found at

MORE TRACKS AND THE EXPO HALL: Both UbuCon and PostgreSQL Days

continue on Friday, as well as the Embedded Track and the Unikernel

Track. MySQL also had a day of sessions, as well as a half-day LPIC-2

Crash Course. Meanwhile, starting at 2 on Friday, the Expo Hall opens

for the first of three days, with more than 140 exhibitors having

their latest products available for the attending public.

UPSCALE AND BAD VOLTAGE LIVE: Once the sessions are done and the expo

hall closes, the evening starts with UpSCALE Talks. Patterned after

O'Reilly's Ignite Talks, speakers try to keep up with slides

automatically advancing during their five-minute presentation. For

more information on who's daring to take the UpSCALE challenge, visit

http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/14x/presentations/upscale

. Just after the UpSCALE talks is Bad Voltage Live brings the team of

Jono Bacon, Jeremy Garcia, Stuart Langridge, and Bryan Lunduke to tape

a live show in front of a live audience. The usual irreverent Bad

Voltage style was be in full form with discussion and debate about

Linux and Open Source, complete with plenty of surprises,

competitions, contests, and give-aways. Although this is at the

SCALE14x conference, the show is open to everyone. Please note, this

show will include some, ahem, “colorful language.â€Â

LOOKING AHEAD TO SATURDAY: Hackaday will be at SCALE 14X Game Night on

Saturday – we'll talk more about Game Night in tomorrow's post –

and they have a special request. Specifically, it's “show and

tell†and a SCALE Museum of items brought by attendees. A more

detailed explanation can be found at
