NTFS security

Recommended Posts

When I right click on a file/folder I expect to see a security tab that allows me to set permissions. Mine is not there. Is this a bug? A feature? Do I need to run a utility now to do this? The drives I have are fornamted NTFS. Thanks!!

Well you can still acess share permissions through computer management but it seems kinda strange that you would not be able to set i right in the folder properties like before. I hope that they add this function back as it just makes things easier and that is what XP is supposed to be all about.

OK. Heres the scoop. In the other versions of Windows anyone can see the NTFS permisions but only administrators could change them. I found that even though you have admin permissions, only the ADMINISTRATOR logon will let you change/set/see them. I had to logon to change mine.

AlecStarr, please dont give advice on that which you know nothing about. smile.gif

Malkosha, your problem is most likely a new "feature" called ForceGuest. You can get your security tab two ways: either hold CTRL while clicking Properties in the context menu or find the ForceGuest key in the reg and set it to 0, then reboot (this will revert the security model back to that of Win2k).
