Curious if windows XP will be worth to upgrade to

Recommended Posts

Now that you gotten the usual flame response from the most popular guy here ::cough::, perhaps you would like a more helpful opinion.

As for as going from 98 to XP goes, this is a big deal. XP certainly has more stabability than 9x/ME does, and, supposedly, will have speed comparable to it assuming you have a decent about of ram (128+). XP will also support hardware that 2K did not in the past. How much more is open to question, but I would take a guess that MS is going for as much 9x compatability as possible.

Justifying a move from Windows 2K is tougher. If all your programs work to your satisfaction in 2K, the upgrade to XP may not be worth the money. Also, if stabability is a concern, even the final release of WinXP will probably not be as solid as 2K is now, until it goes through the usual set of service packs.

If you're a business that is using active directory, you might have to go to XP, as MS has said that a huge bug discovered 12 months ago in active directory will only be fixed by upgrading to XP.

Also, if you have a decent sized network, you know what a pain it is to upgrade all those machines to a new MS OS (or any OS for that matter). Double that if you have domain servers and the like. So that has to be weighed into consideration as well.

As for activation, in its current form, it's easily bypassed. If you prefer, buy one copy, and just apply a crack/whatever to the rest of the copies you want to install on your network. Right now, all you have to do is change an easy-to-find registry key. Note I wouldn't try this if you're a legitimate business...from what I've seen, MS will find you. smile.gif

That's my take on the subject.

You guys must not know how to install a OS right, because I can O/C my PIV to 1600MHz++, warm it back up and play some QIII, UT, browse then net, play with my website, all while listening to some MP3's and not have a single crash all day on WinMe. As far as XP is concerned, I get lockups just sittin there doing nothing on my O/Ced systems, less stable then WinMe from this POV.

It sure is easy to tell da sucka that buys into MS propaganda. But the question remains why buy three copies of an OS for three computers that I own in my home. I don't think the question here is the integrity of the beta.

I agree with RattDawg. Why do you have to buy a copy of an OS for each computer in your home? Is Microsoft trying to rob us blind?

Maybe its their scheme for world domination! laugh

To the tune of "The Real Slim Shady"

Would the guy, jdulmage, please shut up

please shut up.

Look, MS has screwed up with the authentication codes on other products before, not necessarily Windows, but Office. People have reported not being able to use the software on a different computer, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OWNED BY THE SAME PERSON. Hopefully, MS will get this straighted out by the time XP comes to market, or there will be a lot of angry consumers. That could give the Mac OS and Linux a jump on MS. MS does have a right to have authentication codes for their software and OSs, they'd be insane not to, however these codes should not prevent the home user from installing it on all of their computers, regardless of how many they may own.

There's gonna have to be a lot more than what MS is advertising for XP. I bought into ME and got bit hard for it. ME has a lot of things regarding compatability and installing items that should be a choice of the user, specifically the Movie Maker program. System Restore is a good idea, but Im gonna turn it off if it takes up too much space. Stability and ME are two things that do not go together. Hopefully, MS will not screw up this big with XP. Right now, 2000 is very good, and I see no compelling reason to upgrade to XP, especially after my encounter with ME. This is my opinion, and I will continue to advertise it until I am convinced otherwise that XP is a worthwhile upgrade from 2000.

Never has never will laugh
Brian I got bit by the Me thing too. Ran Me from Beta two until the last rc. They were all great until the last release canidate. Well silly me ran out and bought it once it hit the shelve figuring that Microsoft surely would have worked out the bugs before releasing it. Boy, was I wrong. So although XP is looking really strong Im more than a little gun-shy. Add the security features and 8)

Do the math. Also notice I don't come in here and average 5 garbage posts a day. I read what people have to say NOT bash what people have to say.
