Asmo 0 Posted March 28, 2001 I've tried for awhile, no go, GTS card, nvidia drivers 11.01 tried a few diff ones, and editing the registry entrires, and nothign I can do will fix it, has anyone got their refresh rates fixed in games in beta 2 with a nvidia card?? If so please post how and which drivers your using. Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 28, 2001 no fukin reg entries just edit the inf before install here are some instructions that someone else made that i got from somewhere: Edit the .INF file of your TNT/TNT2/GeForce drivers (AFAIK it only works with the NVidia reference drivers (this includes all the misc Win2k drivers from NVidia themselves, Asus, AOpen, etc.), it might not work with any Creative or Diamond custom drivers). Look at the end of the file, all the different card types supported by that driver are listed there under the section "[strings]". What you need to know is the codename of the card, i.e. "NV4" for TNT1, "NV5" for TNT2, "NV10" for "GeForce" and so on. Assuming you have a TNT2 (="NV5"), search for a rather large block of lines looking like this (note the "NV5_Modes" string which indicates that these settings are for the NV5 cards): code: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 640 480 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 320 200 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 320 240 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 400 300 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 480 360 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 512 384 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 640 400 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 800 600 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1024 768 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1152 864 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1280 960 85 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1280 1024 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1600 1200 60 70 72 75 85 100 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1920 1080 60 70 72 75 85 100 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1920 1200 60 70 72 75 85 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1920 1440 60 70 72 75 0"HKR,, NV5_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 2048 1536 60 0" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This has already been edited by me. As you can see, you need to overwrite the undesired refresh rates ("60 70 72 75 85" in my case) with spaces, so the desired refresh rate at a specific screen resolution is the lowest refresh rate number in the according line. Here, I've deleted all rates below 100Hz for 640x400, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x864, and all rates below 85Hz for 1280x1024. Note: there are multiple blocks of lines for different color depths: 8, 16 and 32. Listed above are only the 16bpp modes. You should do this for all three color depths. Then reinstall the driver with the new .INF file. This should solve the OpenGL refresh rate problem. If you need higher refresh rates for DirectDraw/Direct3D games, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DXDIAG.EXE) and switch to the last tab ("More Help"), click the "Override..." button and enter the desired refresh rate. I'm using 100 here, too. This should solve the DirectDraw/Direct3D refresh rate problem. i followed the instructions and have been very impressed with all my games running @ 100 hz what a nice diff. ThC 129 0 Posted March 28, 2001 i dont have this problem because i was smart and backed up my refresh rate entries that i fixed in 2k before i upgraded to XP. Now i get the max usable refresh rate at all colors than just deleting the other rates. Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 28, 2001 Four And Twenty: I tried that, you try it if i you dont believe me, dosn't work. Thc 129: lucky I tried editin them just like you would in 2k but it would NOT work. I would get very weird problems when editin them in the registry. Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 28, 2001 don't tell me what works on my sys beotch tried to help if i doesn't work for you that means that you didn't do it right or something Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 29, 2001 Hey sorry twenty, just frustrated, i know whatcha mean to edit the inf files, i have a geforce2 GTS, and tried editin it every which way possible, and not only does it not work, but it makes it so d3d/openGL do not function. What dets do you suggest? I'm tryin all this with 11.01 version. Anyone else got it workin with a geforce card? Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 i am using the latest from nvidia.com 6.5 i think Share this post Link to post
clutch 1 Posted March 29, 2001 Would the refresh rate utility work? http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/ I use it for Win2K, but I don't know how if it works in WinXP. I thought they used the same drivers, hence the same reg entries which is what this thing works with. ------------------ Regards, clutch Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 i tried that on previous builds of whistler and it did not work. It specificaly states in the documentation that it only works on win2k. Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 Update: just downloaded the 11.01 dets and deleted the refresh rates up to 100 and it is working fine. This has worked for me on all the dets that i have tried. Perhaps you are deleting the values from the wrong section this should work regaurdless of what card u have Share this post Link to post
ThC 129 0 Posted March 29, 2001 dont know what to tell ya other than to load 2k on a partion to get the settings from the reg on there. BTW I have a GF 2 MX so yes it works on GeForce cards Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 where in the reg do u find the settings? i have never tried it that way before Share this post Link to post
*Iblis* 0 Posted March 29, 2001 i also always edit the inf, i've got a GTS and it works for me if i change the values for the NV15, NV15DDR and NV15BR (i'm not sure which one my card comes under and i can't be bothered to work it out, i think it's the NV15DDR cos i remember NV15 not working) Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 29, 2001 asmo why don't you try deleting all the refesh rates that you don't want from every section that will surely work. Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 29, 2001 This must be just my problem, I am tryin this on an install on my other machine, i was tryin it with win XP personal beta 2, UPGRADING from win98se on it, was testing how the upgrade feature worked, perhaps a fresh install or using beta 2 pro would be better, but i'm tellin ya something really fishy is up when you upgrade. Thanks, i think i'll try a clean install and try it out. Share this post Link to post
jdulmage 0 Posted March 29, 2001 and ya just figured out that "upgrade is wrong" during a beta? Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 29, 2001 Hey, i'm testin the software, i'm installin clean right now. Share this post Link to post

The upgrade feature in XP is suposedly the best yet. Also upgrading from 9x is more or less a clean install with the reg entries for all the current software. Acording to what i have read the upgrade from 9x is supposed to be more succesful than from nt/2k. This is good cause alot of home users are gonna be doin the upgrade. Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 30, 2001 Yeah, i am really impressed actually with the upgrade feature, you even uninstall back to 98 from XP, you can't do that in 2000 if you ugpraded from 98. Share this post Link to post
Asmo 0 Posted March 30, 2001 Update: Ok, tried clean install, i get the same thing whenever i edit the refresh rates in the .INF file, like 3dmark2001 wont work, openGL games start up in a window... real weird stuff, i'm gonna post what i did to my inf file and see if i'm somehow making some stupid mistake. -------- This is just an example of one of the entries i'm cuttin out the beginnin crap just to make it look better in the post. ------- 640 480 120 0" 320 200 60 70 72 75 0" 320 240 60 70 72 75 0" 400 300 60 70 72 75 0" 480 360 60 70 72 75 0" 512 384 60 70 72 75 0" 640 400 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0" 800 600 120 0" 1024 768 100 120 0" 1152 864 100 120 0" 1280 960 85 100 120 0" 1280 1024 85 100 120 0" -(cut out the res's past this just for sake of this post)- Now, i have tried, also puttin the 0" back to the end of the line, same results, perhaps i am suppose to be puttin in spaces or something? Could you perhaps post your inf file from 11.01 or what the hell am I doin wrong? I've tried changin the settings on all the things, the prob is not just that it dosnt' change the refresh rates, it totally screws up my drivers. I'm not a newb, and have done this before in 2k, is it just xp personal? Cuz thats why i'm tryin this with, dosnt' make sense. Share this post Link to post
Four and Twenty 0 Posted March 30, 2001 Dude you need the fukin spaces so that everything lines up as it was before. If you are simply deleting them that is why it is fuked up. If you look closely at what I originally posted you would see that it specifically says to add spaces where you delete the undesired refresh rates. All I have to say is follow the damn instructions!
