tear 0 Posted April 29, 2001 I'm building a server for my home network and decided to go with win2k server. The server is going to serve as a member server and internet gateway. To my questions: I probably going to need to run the server as a domain controller right? All I want from the server is that the server should handle all the user accounts. Thats what active directory is right? Or am a wrong? Anything else I need? I'm gonna install the DNS service that comes with win2k server is that the same as DDNS or where can I find the DDNS service? Anything else I need to know? Thanks Share this post Link to post
Guest Posted May 2, 2001 You don't HAVE to use it as a domain controller, but it surely wouldnt hurt. Keep in mind, if you make it a domain controller, make sure you have some RAM in there, cuz AD is a hog. As far as an internet gateway is concerned.. it will work fine, but you would probably be better forking out $100 for a real router... like the Dlink DI-704 (which is the one i have) or one of the Linksys ones. But what you want to do will work fine provided you are not gonna be routing more than 10 computers to the external net. It comes with DNS which when you use DNS and WINS you get some really nice name resoultion going... and this is where having a domain is really nice too. Clutch could tell you a bunch more about exactly how this works... he helped me set it up and I understand it, but he understands it better.
