MaxDamage 0 Posted May 12, 2001 I've tried installing Win2k Pro. for many times (tried both SP1 and original), and after it completes the setup I regulary run Win2k and after it completes loading (in the Logo screen) it shows a blue screen and immidiatly restarts so I can't even read what it says, then I run it again and this time in the first loading status bar (the ASCII status bar) it says the following message: "The file D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced is missing or corrupt..." and it recommends me to go to the recovery console through the setup cd and try to fix it there, so i did, but there is nothing I can do about it in the recovery console... but there were some times when i've managed to run Win2k in safe mode then i installed the new SP2 and all my drivers for it in hope it will help, but no then it started to show peremently, and now when i run it in safe mode it shows "The file D:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or corrupt" <<- in this message the weird "ced" gone.. thats totally weird. oh and also some times it passes the ascii status bar but when done loading after the logo it shows CONFIG loading failed blue screen screen... Anyone has any idea of what can i do ? My specs are: ---------- PIII 600EB ASUS P3V133 (VIA Apollo 133 Pro Chipset) 384MB SDRAM 133mhz 20giga hdd splitted in two partiotions: C: - 15gig D: - 5gig , trying to do dual boot with win98(that is found on C GeForce256SDR SB Live! SHS 0 Posted May 12, 2001 1. Put in Win2000 CDROM Open Windows Explorer you should see label name of the disk make a folder at root of the disk with the same name as label name as the cdrom. 2. Copy all the files from Windows 2000 CD to (HardDisk):\(Label Name) on your HD. 3. Make a folder call it SP2 you Unzip program like winzip to extract files out of sp1network.exe extract to the SP2 folder. 4. Go to the Update directory in the extracted SP2 directory. 5. Make a batch file called update.bat and place these lines into it: update.exe -s:(Driver Letter):\(Label Name) What update.exe looks for is the i386 directory. So change the (Driver Letter):\ to reflect the drive that has the i386 directory from the Windows 2000 CD. (Label Name) is just the directory where the i386 directory resides. In case your wondering why mine is different it's because I have the SELECT version. 6. Save the batch file and run it. 7. It should update your files and it will tell you when it is done. If it doesn't then you have done something wrong. 8. Download CDRWIN from www.goldenhawk.com 9. Get the CD-ROM boot sector and CD Marker files from here: http://www.angelfire.com/de2/w2kcd/neededfiles.zip 10. extracted boot.bin out of neededfiles.zip copy it to (HardDisk):\temp\ 11. Check The (HardDisk):\(Label Name) root of the should now have these files: autorun.inf -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You should have one follow files cdrom_ip.5 - If you are doing 2000 PRO then place this into the root. cdrom_is.5 - If you are doing 2000 SERVER then place this into the root. cdrom_ia.5 - If you are doing 2000 ADVANCED SERVER then place this into the root. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- cdrom_nt.5 read1st.txt readme.doc setup.exe This allso good time add any other newer device drivers to it before you make the image of it, "(HardDisk):\(Label Name)\drivers\?\" give each set driver there own folder" that way you can install out redownload or hunting for the CD later on. You may want to do the same with newer applications like Windows Media Player update thing like that "(HardDisk):\(Label Name)\apps\?\". 12. Open CDRWIN and choose the File Backup and Tools option 13. In the BACKUP/TOOL Operation Choose the (Build an ISO9660 Image File) 14. in FILE BACKUP List click the DIRECTORY button and choose the directory where you copied Windows 2000 (HardDisk):\(Label Name). Click OK. Then click the ADD button. You should see the directory in the big box now. 15. Uncheck all Box then only check the Include Hidden Files, Long FileNames(JOLIET), Include System Files, Recurse SubDirectories boxes. 16. For IMAGE FILENAME click the three dots at the right and choose a directory and a filename. Then click Save. You should see the pathname and the filename of your .iso in the box "Like in (HardDisk):\temp\win200.iso". 17. Check the Disable Version Numbers box. 18. Click the Advanced Options button. 19. Volume Descriptor tab. Volume Label use the name of the original Windows 2000 CD. Volume Label:(Label Name) Volume Set Name: (Label Name) Publisher Name: MICROSOFT CORPORATION Preparer Name: MICROSOFT CORPORATION, ONE MICROSOFT WAY, REDMOND WA 98052, (206) 882-8080 20. Dates/Times & Import Session tab don't nede to mess with those 21. Bootable Disc tab. Check: Make Bootable Disc box. Media Emulation Type: Custom Image File Name: (HardDisk):\temp\boot.bin. DEVELOPER Name: MICROSOFT CORPORATION Load Segment: 07C0 Load Sector Count: 4 22. Click OK and then START. 23. When it's done open up any CDR burning program that supports .ISO's to burn your IMAGE to CD. Share this post Link to post

MaxDamage 0 Posted May 14, 2001 I've tried to make an upgrade install over Win98, thought all was going well, the setup was sucessfull, then BOOM! that problem again on the startup, WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMd missing or corrupted , though sometimes the system did work. But most of the time i had this annoying error message and nothing i could do about it, i've even installed SP2 , all compatible drivers for win2k, VIA 4in1 1.29, still nothing.. this stupid message, what can cause this? hardware? can it be the partition table? of 15gig, 5gig ? .. (tried to install on both partitions). where should i turn to for help ? Share this post Link to post
DosFreak 2 Posted May 14, 2001 Are you overclocking? What brand of memory are you using? Share this post Link to post
crissi 0 Posted May 17, 2001 20giga hdd splitted in two partiotions: C: - 15gig D: - 5gig , trying to do dual boot with win98(that is found on C ) <-- isnt there something about win2k and the need for it to be on the c drive?? could'nt that be the problem...?? Share this post Link to post
Cardinal 0 Posted May 18, 2001 Crissi, Windows 2000 can be installed on any drive as long as the boot loader is installed on drive C which W2k does automatically. Well, hmm this is a problem I have suffered to some degree. Not the same error but similar. This annoys me about Windows 2000. It's a temperamental OS that's for sure. It does not take much tweaking with it or it will just kill itself. But It does not sound like you have tweaked. I don't think it has anything to do with the partition. If the hard drive is on a pci controller, eg highpoint or Hotrod then Windows 2000 needs to have the driver installed seperately during the initial install. It is very sensitive to overclocking as DosFreak hinted. I can't really imagine what it could be just by looking at your hardware setup. Hmm perhaps a Bios setting could be at fault. If all else fails make sure you have the Bios settings properly set. A good link for Bios optimisation can be found here Other then that I can't offer anything more. Hopefully someone else might. Good luck. - Card Share this post Link to post
Wolf87 0 Posted May 18, 2001 Did you check the quality of your ram? Did you include the hard disk controller driver at the very beginning of installation (key F6)? Integration of SP2 in a boot CD works well but two things to watch: -file cdromsp2.tst must not be copied too soon to the Windows 2k root directory since it could prevent the update; -update must be run from the Windows 2k root directory, not from its own i386 and not from the SP2 update directory. darrylzero 0 Posted June 7, 2001 hey guys, here's the intructions for slipstreaming sp2 with win2k: 1)download sp2 2)extract the service pack to dir 3)copy win2k cd to HD 4)x:\sp2\i386\update\update.exe /s ;(:\win2k (:from command line) *change path to path were you extracted sp2 and were you put your win2k files. 5)now you need to make cd bootable, either obtain boot.bin file for you version of win2k or take your win2k cd and put into drive and make your own boot.bin file. 6)if making your own boot.bin then launch cdrwin and choose extract disks/tracks/sectors utility. 7)extract mode should be set to sectors, sector selection should read start: 20 end : 20 data mode1 (2048) 8)choose path for boot.bin file, click start 9)now that you have a boot.bin file you need to launch cdrwin's file backup and tools utility. 10)backup tool operation should read Record directories/files directly to an ISO9660 disk(on the fly) 11)add the directory of your slipstreamed win2k files 12)have the following checked:longfile names, recurse subdirectories, Include Hidden Files, Include System files 13)now select advanced options, volume lable should read W2PFPP_EN for win2kpro, now select bootable disk tab and choose your boot.bin files, Developer name should be "Microsoft Corporation" and Load sector count should be 4.Click ok. 14)burn disk hope this helps, Darrylzero Share this post Link to post
