prairiechicken 0 Posted February 4, 2004 I have win xp on my newer computer and have just installed mandrake linux 9.2 on my old computer. I want to network to two of them for file and internet sharing. I have 2 network cards on the one running win xp and a cable internet connection. I believe I use a program called samba for the file sharing, but what do I do to share the internet connection. Share this post Link to post
LinuxCrusader 0 Posted February 4, 2004 If I'm understading well, you are only usign a cable modem and you want to share the internet connection to both of your computers...if this correct, then you might have to buy a new router and install it between your computer and your cable modem. You might have to configure your router with the computer that has WinXp...once your router is configure, you can share your internet connection with the one that has Linux. I recently installed Mandrake 9.2 also and had to buy a router to since my dsl ISP say that they don't support linux...but once you configure your router, you should able to share the connection with your other computer. here2helpall 0 Posted February 5, 2004 Windows XP Pro has a feature called internet connection sharing, which will allow you use the other NIC as a router. Plug your Linux box into your WinXP box with a crossover cable, or hook them both up to a switch in case you don't have a crossover cable or want to connect more than one machine to your WinXP box's other NIC. You can enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the WinXP as a service on the Network Properties Page for the interface you want to use, I think. I have only set it up behind a Windows 98 machine, but there are Help documents available when you go to Start > Help > Search > and then type in internet connection sharing. A router would be useful, but it can be expensive and a crossover cable is $5. Share this post Link to post
taeuler 0 Posted February 26, 2004 Here's a tip Admiral LSD had for me: Quote: As for an internet connection through a Windows XP box, provided the XP box is the machine hosting the connection you can simply use XPs Internet Connection Sharing (activated in the property sheet for the internet connection concerned) to create a gateway the Gentoo box can use to download it's packages. Just enable ICS on the XP box and use the net-setup program on the Gentoo LiveCD (or if you're using a different distro, whatever tool it uses to set up network connections) to use the XP box as it's gateway. I do this myself and it works a treat. Share this post Link to post
